Cracking his neck The Godaime faced his opponent, a large burly panda in a green loincloth who was flexing his muscles. Gosei was not much of a close quarters fighter so this style of battle did not suit him very well. Still, he could always compensate using less mundane means, just the way he always managed to compensate for his infallacies. The bear lunged forward suddlenly, aiming a right handed strike at the Godaimes apparently unprotected left side.

Of course this had been anticipated and the exposure had been intentional. With a loud crashing sound the hand of the panda came to a slightly painful halt on the armour of chakra that the Kazeraikou had called forth from the realm of elusive life energy matter. Like a ripple a faint blue light expanded across the shield like a ripple effect until the shield collapsed around the Godaime, spreading the chakra to the wind.

Still, this was only a set up, as the Godaime was already extending his arm to strike the panda at a very specific point that would lead to great damage, it being a focal point of Chi. The opponent was already anticipating that however, spinning away and swinging a leg at Gosei’s knees. Focussing for a second the Godaime managed just in time to evoke the armour again, afore it was dispelled by a second blow. Luckily he did not lose a kneecap yet.

Still, the force of the blow swept the Godaime off his feet, dropping most indignantly to the floor. He tried a kick to the knees of his opponent but the target was already too far to the side. A kick came his way. What a cowardly thing to do! Kicking the opponent when he was down! With another bubble of chakra the Godaime tried to ward off the kick that was aimed at his side. Sure it dampened the pain of the blow a bit, but damn, it would still hurt.

Using the force from the blow the Godaime powered his roll, kickstarting this roll into a jump to a crouched position. Of course the coordinated movement of his opponent was much more efficient that his own impromptu ‘go with the flow’ type of movement. He still needed some more adapting to this style of battle. Already his opponent was coming. Immediately Gosei called into effect again the initial layering of chakra shielding.

It blended perfectly with the bubble of chakra he had already invoked, creating a dual layer defence. This one needed to do the trick because the next punch was already flying in his direction. Bringing up his arm he would try to deflect the blow. The hit would however be severely lowered in terms of impact, this time barely inflicting enough damage to make a small dent in a pack of room temperature butter due to the different layers of chakra.

”Not even close!” Gosei shouted at his black and white furred opponent, fuelling even more chakra into the secondary layer of defence. This however immediately seemed to destabilise it, throwing the entire technique in disarray. Around the Godaime the air shimmered as the chakra armour started to collapse under its own strain, the chakra seeping out into the air giving the entire thing a sheen as if the air was heated from a hot soil.

Understanding the need for reinforcement the Godaime immediately compensated by thickening the layer of chakra that surrounded him, making the concentration around his form less dense, but spreading the same amount of chakra within a larger volume. This made the defence as strong as the previous one, but it also made it thicker, meaning that there was a thicker layer of chakra to plough through, lowering still the power of any strike.

This immediately showed its worth when the panda came forth another time, striking Gosei with another strong punch, this time aimed at the head. The Godaime instinctively reared his head back and tried to raise his fists but once again he was too slow, the punch managing to make it over his rising hands, aiming straight for his face. It however halted this time millimetres from his face as the thick light blue light of the chakra halted the blow.

More armour was always needed! Gosei immediately danced backwards a few meters, a bit taken aback that the panda had so easily subverted his defences. Well, his normal defences that was. Around Gosei the elusive shielding once again retracted into obscurity, once again returning to the nigh on invisible state it usually lingered in whenever it went undisturbed. One would not know he had donned a supernatural armour unless one tried to make its use paramount.

Still, that meant that reinforcing what he had would ultimately be more in his interest than trying to perfect his boxing technique because the latter seemed far farther from the realm of possibilities than trying to perfect an armour made from chakra. It was actually not that hard to achieve this, so far he had only padded the armour with ever more chakra, making the layer concerned thicker and thicker to repel incoming attacks.

That meant that so far he could achieve more effectiveness not with ever more chakra, but by condensing the layer that he had. Sure, the distance an attack had to travel through the thick layer of chakra would decrease, but the rate of slowing and hampering an attack in this specific layer would result in a far more effective lowering of damage than any padding ever could because at some point the lower density would simply not be enough.

Giving a sigh Gosei straightened his back and set his feet slightly closer, dancing around his opponent. Eventually Gosei ended up very close to the corner of the area they had outlined for their sparring match. Leaving behind an array of after images Gosei jumped to other side of the arena with a shunshin. This was a paramount part of the exercise. He needed a bit of time to reinforce the chakra armour he had called around his form so far.

This time he would not be permitted as long as he remained within striking distance, now he was further back though this time was suddenly plentiful. Gosei condensed the chakra layer immediately, which as a result suddenly became visible as a light blue opaque sheen over his form. Never had the form been this tangible. With the chakra becoming a translucent form this however opened several new avenues to using this particular technique.

First of all now people could see that he was wearing, or rather, having active, this chakra armour, which could somewhat to completely decrease the surprise element of having a supernatural armour. On the other hand this meant that whatever he wore would be visible to all, allowing him to don something flashy to make his presence known or to impart a message on to allies based on the type of armour he was donning.

As a result of this now, the armour could always be shaped just how he wanted. No time to do that in an orderly fashion however! Around his form the armour shimmered into shape, forming a dō, typical of an ō-yoroi around his torso. After this his time however ran out, as his attention was immediately subverted from the current task he had set himself back to the battle. Once again Wang threw himself at the Godaime with renewed fervour.

With the concentration broken Gosei found his chakra armour reverting to the status of an undefined layer covering his visage. He raised and arm and although the impact ringed through his arms all the way to his torso there was no actual damage imparted as the layer of chakra managed to quite efficiently capture the momentum of the attack and stop it from actually invoking any damage on the countenance of the Kazeraikou.

The armour was there but it was clearly not yet perfected, being unable to deal with the actual impact of the attack as that was still imparted directly to his body, whereas any damage somehow seemed to be absorbed by the thick layer of chakra, warding him from having the fight prematurely due to his arms being like…. Broken. Gosei had already observed one truth, without this armour he would not be able to fight like this.

Normally his arm would be either broken or dislocated from impacts like these. In this case however a majority of the force seemed to be absorbed by the armour. Yet, the blow still managed to shake his arms. This should not be the case if the armour was perfected right? That meant that Gosei would have to stop actually sparring with this individual as he had done up till now and instead start working on perfecting this very technique.

This also meant that he no longer could be standing still like a punching bag trying to get a new strike in. Straightening his back for better sudden movement and less for taking punches Gosei started to focus on only two things now: Staying out of range and not letting his focus be broken by annoyingly thrown punches. Immediately the panda stepped forward to get again in striking range, but in response Gosei would move back.

That and slightly to the side so he would not be pushed to and pinned against the wall. This elicited a grunt from his opponent. It was going to be that kind of match it seemed. Gosei instead did not bother, focussing simultaneously on the piece of armour that he had been able to garner previously before he had been rudely interrupted. He had begun to shape an ō-yoroi. This for multiple reasons, one of them being because Gosei liked that design.

The secondary reason whas that the ō-yoroi was a relatively simple design that should be easy to imitate. Many components were straight or flat surfaces that could easily be moulded into shape. Only the helmet and the facemask might be difficult to replicate. As soon as he thought of it the dō formed again around his chest, immediately in high detail with all the individual scales outlined. Clearly his affinity with genjutsu was also showing.

For as always it was his rich imagination that made it easier to form the shape of the armour. With the top part done Gosei focussed on his upper legs as he sidestepped the charging panda a second time. As he did so the kusazuri and haidate formed into shape, creating a shape to the artificial protection around his upper legs. Giving it shape seemed to give the entire thing larger rigidity or was that simply his own imagination running wild?

Sparing little time Gosei immediately went forth to form the greaves from his knees down, which snapped into shape nigh instantly, meaning that apart from his shoulders, arms and head all was now covered by actual armour. Not that the rest was not covered, it was simply still overlain by the light blue layer that was unshaped, making Gosei look like a balloon on top of armless armour with tentacles for upper extremities.

With the armour fully formed Gosei dodged out of the way, now able to fully focus on dodging as the technique was no longer seeping his focus away. The first swing came again squarely at his face. Since the chakra based armour did not encumber him in any way like actual armour would Gosei was able to lean back deftly from the middle without tumbling over from the sudden shift in his center of mass towards his back.

Of course the next attack came to his legs, which Gosei had slightly anticipated but he had no idea which type of attack it would be, an uppercut or a sweeping attack. The swooshing of air reached his ears, in response to which Gosei immediately shifted his full weight to his hands as the leaning dodge became a backwards somersault. As he did so he could feel the wind of the air displacing brush past his wrists. All just in time.

He was doing pretty good so far in terms of dodging, this was all however with the Godaime already knowing that something was coming since he was already very much within the melee battle. Rotating back onto his feet Gosei raised his arms, ready to receive the next assault from his opponent.

”That will be enough!” Gosei ordered as he jumped back to dodge another punch thrown his way. The two sparring partners bowed to each other to show their mutual respect until Wang decided to dismiss himself, disappearing in a fluffy alabaster cloud. In their place Gosei would have to call forth new sparring partners. Ones that would make this exercise far more worthwile than Wang ever could have been able to.

To this end he would first need Pikiran, the illusionist who could simulate the different training areas for Gosei using his Genjutsu. In this manner Gosei would be able to remain training in his combat training room lest he lose the benefits. The second opponent would be Pemanah. Although she was a relatively poor combatant she was the best of the lot at attacks from unknown directions due to her weapon specialisation and ability to commit to stealth.

A wry smile curled around his lips Gosei would summon the two, giving out short instructions on a certain environment and what he expected from his sparring partners in order to further his training of this very specific ability. The Godaime would put his hands together and close his eyes, allowing the illusion to wash over him.

Slowly opening his eyes Gosei would find a whole new environment revealed to him. He was standing in a forest now. Yes, this was indeed a prime hunting ground for Pemanah. A fact that would immediately be revealed to him by the very distracting hard impact of a small stone lobbed at his head. Gosei wheeled around, trying to determine the direction the pebble might have originated from but all he saw were the trees reaching to the heavens.

Rubbing his head Gosei would bend over to grab the stone that had been thrown at him, as if the stone could be squeezed for information. Of course the stone itself was illusory as would the blue boil that was forming now at the top of his skull. Still it made the humiliation not less. It was at this very point that Gosei finally realised that by bending over to pick up the stone he had made a critical error and had even potentially exposed himself.

Immediately upon realising this Gosei would tilt his entire body headforward, turning the bending forward into a very deft combat roll indeed. Changing his direction midway the Godaime would end in a kneeling position, facing the direction again he initially faced when he entered this illusion.

The moment he came into his new position the Godaime scanned the area in front of him, realising slowly that nothing was there. Not as far as he could see. “Say Heyoheyoheyo if you read this!” Suddenly he became aware of another projectile coming his way. Mainly because it quite painfully impacted his behind, creating a secondary imaginary blue boil to accompany the one that was already firmly growing on the top of his head.

Groaning loadly and bemoaning his predicament Gosei swirled around, once again seeing nothing. It was at this point that he realised another important factor. Pikiran was still in play along with with Pemanah. The latter was far from alone in opposing him. It was very much possible that the first was waiting for the second to attack and then recast a prior existing invisibility glamour. If the timing was done well this would explain a lot.

That meant that between initiation of the attack by Pemanah and the recast of Pikiran there was only a very limited amount of time between the attack and the invisibility being initiated. Closing his eyes for a few moments Gosei focused, no longer trying to see his target but instead attempting to enhance his other senses.

Pikiran he would never capture. Surely that crafty Panda was hiding inside one of the trees since he was the originator of the Glamour and thus not beholden by its effects unlike Pemanah and Gosei. A rustle emanated suddenly from Gosei’s right. Immediately His eyes swivelled within their sockets to that side of his persona without him actually turning his head to inform his opponent of anything he was seeing.

In the corner of his eye there was a flash, only very shortly, but it was visible and long enough for the Godaime to register its existence. Almost reflexively Gosei scooted off to the side with a very short roll. Yes, he found himself doing a lot of those lately. Where he stood a small pebble crashed into the soil, creating a miniature crater as the thing itself bounced off and skid to a halt eventually against Gosei’s foot. This was the first dodge.

Emboldened by this mini success Gosei finally stood up straight, closing his eyes again to ward off this unnecessary sense and enhance the other ones that usually played the second fiddle to the eyesight since that was a human’s main sensing organ, surpassing all others in usage.

That was what would be the things that would be most useful to him. A passive ability to stay alert at all times, primed at all times for faint unexpected spells, for minute differences in pressure and instinct. Most importantly would of course be sound, any rustling, swishing, swooshing, buckling, whistling, ringing, flinging, stinging, wringing, sloshing and swooping sounds would be on the list of things he could not miss.

A certain thought for a second crossed his mind. How would the sound of an arrow sound like? Many people who had one approach their ear at speed did not live to tell what it sounded like so Gosei could hear how it would be like. Still, this time the vigilance would pay off. The creaking of a branch, no matter how faint reverberated through his skull, clear enough to estimate the direction of the sound, even if the distance was uncertain.

Once again Gosei scooted to the side, this time not even opening his eyes. Rather, he went on nothing but pure memory of how the area looked like in order to keep himself from fumbling his way through the dodge of the next pebble which once again skidded harmlessly across the ‘forest’ floor that Pikaran had evoked.

Gosei stood still, trying to hear the next attack incoming, but to a mediocre amount of surprise no attack ever came. Not even that much surprise, the longer it took, the larger the chance he would not be expecting the attack nor the direction it would come from. Very likely the opponent was moving extra slowly and carefully in order to avoid making any sound that would make her presence known to the Godaime.

In the end Gosei had no idea how he knew the weapon was incoming. Had he heard it, felt it or correctly interpreted his attackers intent? The Godaime had no idea, for he had already dodged the incoming pebble before it was sent crashing into the tree behind Gosei. Whirling to the side in a mass of robes Gosei slapped the pebble out of the air, his hands hardened by years of training Dian Xue Shu easily being able to take the blow.

It was over, he knew how to detect incoming attacks. Opening his eyes Gosei saw the projectile crash into the tree harmlessly. It had been a large one actually, right about the size of a golf ball. Still, it could not have made much sound right? Shrugging the Godaime dismissed his summons, he no longer needed them for now. And with them the illusory terrain disappeared, leaving Gosei standing in his training room all by himself.
