Akiko sat on the porch of the inn where she was staying, her bare feet tapping absentmindedly in the dust. A strange, extremely old sword sat by her side, along side a shrinkwrapped box that had a picture of a pair of roller blades on the top. Alongside the image of the roller blades was a heavily stylized 'Air Trek', written in contemporary graffiti stylizing. There was a sticker on the plastic wrapping that said 'Now only 24,000 Ryo!'. There had been a recent price drop, though the things were still pricey.
"And why'd I buy these anyway?" She had gone shopping for some supplies during a a stop in the Land of Tea, and wound up buying these in a small shop in port. The day was getting too late to fly on, but it wasn't late enough to go get a room at the local inn either. So she had wandered around the port town and she had eventually found her way into an antique shop. In that shop, she had discovered an old sword with equally old fittings. It couldn't really even be called a Katana, it was much more a Tachi.
Akiko sighed, she had been feeling...uneasy. Her heart felt uneasy. And not just about this inn, which shouldn't exist. How did it stay afloat, given the utter lack of travelers going to and from the village. But there was something else on her mind. Omori was watching the television with the volume down low, watching the Public Broadcasting Station, which was running something on Mozart at the moment. Perhaps he wondered about the Inn, but Akiko was too distracted. Absentmindedly, Akiko marked the location from her memory on her World Map.
Omori noticed the way she kicked the dust and turned off the telly. Akiko tried to figure out what was bothering her, but she just couldn't. A furry paw handed over a hot cup of tea. The hotel was actually fairly good quality. A nice room, all the amenities, both indoor and outdoor baths. It was a nice place, and the village was putting her up here while she was visiting. It was really nice of them. As for the treaty, she couldn't just had over her Hita-ate. It was...her soul.
Akiko took a sip of her tea and looked up at the full moon. With the beauty of the moon, Akiko tried to compose, but couldn't come up with even a single line. She took another sip of the tea and sighed. Omori look at her to say 'what's wrong?' Akiko told him that it was nothing, and returned to her tea. She set the tea to the side and picked up the box. Her finger rubbed over the seam of the wrap.
A whine from Omori told her that he was worried about her. "It's ok Omori-tan." There had only been one pair of ATs even close to her size, but these ones should fit well enough. Akiko tried to open the box, but the shrink wrap defeated her. She kept trying for almost three minutes, before handing it off to Omori with a frustrated growl. Chuckling, Omori pierced the plastic before handing the box back. The small girl removed the plastic and set it aside before taking the top off the box.
The first thing Akiko saw was the instruction manual for the skates. Before putting the devices on, Akiko decided to read over the pamphlet. "Thank you for purchasing the Air Trek. Air Trek are advanced motorized Roller Skates that can be customized to the user's specifications with little technical knowledge. Please use these Air Trek and Aim for the Sky." The booklet went on to detail the technical specifications, none of which Akiko could understand. She continued to read past that.
"hm...so you can put pressure on the heels to slowly move forward, more pressure for more speed. And you skate like normal to move at higher speeds. There's also a lock on the bottom that lets the skates act like normal roller blades. They're also designed to be open to easy customization, and come with some unpainted spare parts for the user to modify the Air Trek.
Also, please note the READ system installed in your Air Trek. The READ system uses a memory stick installed in your Air Trek to store information on your runs, such as total run time, average speed, and other details. You can check the READ of anyone within fifty meters of you with a special Mobile Phone Application, available on most carriers, as well as on the iOS devices, and Android, or with a special add-on for most Gadget-class devices, such as Binoculars and Goggles."
After Akiko finished reading the manual, she handed it off to Omori and looked in the box. There was an attachment for a pair of goggles, some ornamental spare parts in an unpainted plastic grey, some actually useful spare parts, and a small tool set to keep the ATs in good working condition. The ATs were a nice color combination, very warm colors as well. The design of the framework was a little basic, but it was good enough. Despite her uneasy heart, she was surprisingly satisfied with this purchase.
Her other one....Akiko took one of the motorized skates in hand and looked at it for a moment. After thinking for a moment, Akiko tried to pull the skate on. Her toes hit something solid, with high resistance, but not hard. She reached her hand in and drew out a wad of paper. She set the paper aside with the plastic wrap and proceeded to undo the knotted shoe strings on the skate. Akiko then pulled the skate on and began to lace and tie the skate.
Akiko repeated the process for the second skate. She took it in hand and removed the paper first. Then she pulled the skate on and began to lace it up. She was careful to follow the lacing pattern that had come on the skate. She had done the same with the first. Now, both skates were tied on securely. Akiko got the instruction manual back from Omori and read it over again. Following it's instructions, Akiko took the memory stick from the box and inserted it into the heel of her Right AT. At the moment, it was registered with a serial number, but she could edit that when she got access to a computer, so her times would be attached to her name.
