The Shitakuma man sat in completely silence outside of the Takikage's office, his back facing the wall, and himself located off to the side to avoid any wanderer's footsteps. He saw nothing, but in his mind he was pondering, remembering, memories that occurred so long ago, and attempting to resurface them as if they were brand new once again.
The boy nervously held the wooden mock-sword in his trembling hands, he was still blind back then, as he always had been, but the master did not take pity on him. Shitakuma were known to be as lethal, if not more, than those that could see clearly.
"Zetsumei, that's your name eh? Death? Very cute. If you do not learn quickly, I will make sure you wish for death. You are going to strengthen your reflexes. You know the basics, to block, dodge, parry, and hence forth. There are three boys, those that have been training with you, all around you. They are all going to attack you, and you will not strike back. You will do everything you can to avoid getting hurt, and they will not stop until you fall, or I call them off. Begin."
Zetsumei was naturally quick. At first there was just one boy, in front of him throwing rather slow motions at him. He would duck one swipe, hit wooden sword to wooden sword on the next, then get hit in the shoulder by the third. Not too hard, the boy was afraid of hurting Zetsumei, but after he received a wicked glare from their master, the playtime farce ended.
The boy came again, hitting harder, swinging faster, and Zetsumei knew that he couldn't slack off. He would hit blades, lean away to avoid the wooden blade, parry, dodge, etc. It went well for about two minutes, then the second boy joined in. He wasn't as skill as the first, but he was an addition to the initial boy's attacks.
Zetsumei found himself getting hit often, he just wasn't fast enough to block, dodge, or parry them all, however, the master would not call them off, not yet. Pain was a good lesson, it taught Zetsumei just how important it was to avoid getting hit.
After he began to adapt to the two boys, the third was called in, and he hit hard. It wasn't so much that he was faster, because he was by far the slowest of the three, yet each attack of his that Zetsumei blocked instead of avoided entirely was a painful jolt in his arms. His attack, Zetsumei quickly learned, were best to be dodged and avoided altogether.
This training went on for nearly twenty minutes when the Master called them off. All four boys panting, yet Zetsumei felt like he was choking on the air because he was breathing so hard. He fell to his knees, bumps and bruises throbbed all over his body, his head felt dizzy, and he just wanted to kill the boys, even though he knew they were forced into this.
"Zetsumei. Death, it's a good name. How do you feel? Get up, your time isn't over just yet. If you are still alive, then you have the power to stand up and continue."
Zetsumei nodded with difficulty, fully expecting his torture to be over when he called it off. But no, it was for a thirty second breather, and back to the marathon of defense.
"Very good, alright boys, pick your weapons up. It's time to go again."
