In-Depth
Personality: Kaane Ilera is a strange mix of an ancient greek philosopher, a teenager that simply doesn’t care, and a fervent nationalist. He usually spends his time in relaxation, listening to music and practicing simple chakra techniques. He doesn’t like taking sides in any argument he doesn’t have a definitive opinion about, and his favorite phrase is completely stereotypical for his age: “Whatever.” To people who look at Kaane for only an instant, they see only a ne’er do well teenager that could use discipline.
However, in addition to his surface of apathy, he is a deep person filled with longing to know things. He thinks quite a bit for his age, and is rarely emotional, using calm logic to understand the world around him; it is rare for emotion to take him over. The few people who know this level of Kaane’s personality see him as egotistical; though he doesn’t really see himself as above anyone else, when he interacts with others it can sometimes seem that he has a huge problem with his ego, especially since Kaane speaks his mind without thinking beforehand. Thus, he rarely speaks to anyone unless the person has something of worth to talk about. He also has an underlying goal to find the meaning of his life, chakra, and pretty much the entire world. This goal is the reason he practices chakra manipulation, as he believes that its mastery will bring him enlightenment as to its true nature (thus, his personal affinity towards fire and lightning jutsu, as he believes their raw energy best defines what chakra is). Still, he hates to think of it as an energy source; he thinks of chakra as an intimate connection with the divine. This is his only stable tenet of his philosophy, however, and his observations of life change his worldview constantly, making him quite difficult to follow. He doesn’t mind this however, and he welcomes anyone who wishes to try and understand him. Being a mystery is something he enjoys thoroughly, though one day when he figures it all out, he aspires to teach others what he has learned. Currently, although he usually doesn’t care about what other people think, he does help those in need, as his beliefs have led him to believe that others need as much guidance on their own journeys as possible since they normally neglect their self-improvement (of course, if he were to find that the idea behind life was to gain more power than anyone else and destroy anybody in his path, he would take up that goal immediately).
The third component of his personality, his love for Takigakure, affects nearly everything Kaane does. He doesn’t allow it to obscure his general idea of life, but he loves it all the same. In a life that is prone to uncertainty, Takigakure keeps him stable. This love is the only reason he works as a ninja instead of for himself. Without Waterfall, Kaane would be just another hermit wandering in search of truth.
He is also fully aware of his illegitimate birth, but he does not publicize such information for obvious reasons. It doesn’t bother him much, though he would like to see his mother again. The last time he had seen her was at only five years old, and he had loved her dearly. Also, whoever his father was, he has come to forgive him for his atrocities. He is still quite sensitive to being called “bastard,” however, and it is almost the only thing that will get Kaane angry.
He has a few quirks that he never was able to shake: Kaane absolutely loves military uniforms, and expresses it in his fashion sense constantly. He also has no interest in romanticism whatsoever, and it is hard to distract him in that sense. He also enjoys sitting outside the gates of the village in the rain and watching the lightning from the storms that pass through. His efforts to become closer to the earth in his search for the meaning of life has also given him a knack of identifying and using the powers of plants. Finally, while Kaane is more of a thinker than a doer, he does enjoy sparring for the sake of fighting and releasing energy. Practically, he also enjoys it for the sake of practicing his chakra techniques. Thus, pretty much the only things that can make Kaane smile are sparring, fashion, music, and philosophy.
Appearance: Kaane cares about his appearance, and he constantly tailors his “look” to “define who he is.”
Head: Kaane has an ovalish head with voluminous, messy (though not dirty) black hair that reaches down behind and in front of his shoulders to around the middle of his back, spiking in curly tufts here and there. He is considering a ponytail in the future. He has a lightly tanned Caucasian complexion, and he keeps his facial skin in almost crystal clear condition.
Kaane also has blue, curious eyes that, by different people in different situations, have been described as “easy to get lost in,” “like a little kid’s,” and “horrifyingly soul piercing.” In contrast with his mouth and nose, these eyes are the only part of his body that betray any emotion whatsoever since they are usually unfocused and filled with wonder, while his mouth forms an unbroken line that always makes him seem robotic. The soul-piercing side of his eyes rarely comes out unless you really get Kaane angry, which is a very frightening thing to see.
Body: Kaane is naturally quite thin and very weak in terms of physical strength, which is one reason why he spurned taijutsu (the other being that beating people senseless is just not his style). One good punch will knock him on the ground for at least 5 seconds, and even a deflected punch will knock him off balance with ease (this will change when Kaane eventually learns a fighting style). His body maintains a relaxed posture that Kaane will not abandon unless a situation requires his full attention.
Clothing: Kaane takes pride in his fashion sense as it expresses not only his lack of care for but total investment in life. Kaane is the only one he knows who understands this paradox, and it creates a clothing style that looks something like this: Kaane wears a loose light grey cotton shirt with sleeves that travel slightly past his elbows (which Kaane himself tailored, since the shirt was originally supposed to be long-sleeved). He wears thin bandages from where the sleeves end to the palms of his hands to give the illusion that he practices taijutsu constantly and to cover up his lacking muscle definition. He also wears them, of course, because they simply look ravishing when worn the right way. The cloak he uses to carry and conceal his weapons is the same grey as his shirt on the back side, while the inside is a green and brown cameo lining. His shirt is loosely tucked into a pair of brown and green (army style) cameo, the same as the inside of his cloak, pants, which are tied off between ¾ or ½ of the way down his legs to show off a pair of black jackboots (in the style of a military officer’s footwear) made of a highly flexible, shiny, artificial plastic in order to retain his agility which would have been lost with other materials. His Takigakure headband is tied around his neck, with the fabric of the band matching that of his shirt. Kaane is proud of his work, though he often has a sneaking suspicion that people think he looks absolutely ridiculous.
Background: Kaane was born to a farmer's wife in Taki no Kuni in an accident of terrible proportions. A famous politician from a neighboring land (who remains relatively unknown to this day, as he fell into obscurity and spent a great amount of money to make sure no one could possibly know him after the incident), met a farmer’s wife known only as Ina while traveling through the aforementioned village. She was stunning to the politician’s perverted mind, and he called off his voyage to stay in the village for a week to campaign to the populace of the area. Of course, his real motive was the woman who had delighted him so with her beauty. On the 3rd day of his extended stay in the village, he came to her, promising her riches, fame, and power if she would participate in his scheme to “free” her from her husband. The faithful Ina curtly replied “no” without another word wasted, and left to continue on with her life.
However, the politician would not be denied; on the 4th day of his stay he hired mercenaries to kidnap Ina and discreetly take her back to his room at the inn he was staying in. Needless to say, she was raped by this now-psychotic man, and then left out in the street after he was through. Crying, she came back to her husband and told him what had happened, only to be thrown out by him in anger, not remembering how they had once loved. All he could care about was the shame the incident could bring on his reputation, and in his uncertainty and anger left her to die.
The woman fled the village, scorned by all who had loved her, until she came upon the Seisui after traveling on foot for days, having to beg passersby for food and drink. An order of monks from the city took her in, caring for the broken Ina. After 9 months of living in inconsolable sadness, simply unable to abort her baby, Ina gave birth to her son, now known as Kaane Ilera. The monks named the baby Shin-Kan (which he would change later on in his life to Kaane Ilera. To eliminate confusion, he will be known from here on in as Kaane), as the baby came into the world quiet and prayerful, like a priest.
He never cried once during his infancy, and he laughed only sparingly. He simply looked around wherever he was with his mouth open in babyish curiosity. Ina was dumbfounded by the strangeness of her son and was convinced that he was a divine miracle: she treasured him as her own son, forgetting who his father really was. Then came the day, around when Kaane was 4, when the monks noticed something strange about the young child: he was able to manipulate chakra. He wasn’t good at it at first, but the fact that he came from a peasant’s family and was able to do so was remarkable. The monks knew he had to be sent away to Takigakure to hone his skills, but his mother wouldn’t allow it for some time. The monks had asked a hard thing of her to give up the only precious thing she had left to love, but finally, she relented, knowing that it was the best possible thing she could do for her son. On a rainy spring morning when Kaane was 5 years old, he met with his mother for the last time. They said their final goodbyes sorrowfully, and two monks escorted Kaane to Takigakure.
At first sight, Kaane fell in love with the city: it was utterly magnificent: the towering structures built on the rock face behind the waterfall’s colossal gates mesmerized him, and caused the beginning of his ever-present curiosity’s metamorphosis into something much greater than himself. The city behind the waterfall...even today he gets shivery speaking the name to himself. Even though he was young, he knew that this was where he wanted to spend his life. Takigakure was his home.
After showing some of his skills to a teacher in the Academy there, he became a full-fledged member of the village. One of the Chuunin teaching his class took care of him until he was old enough to live on his own. His name is Yoshi Takata, and he still keeps constant contact with Kaane during their busy lives. Takata had (and still has) an immeasurable effect on his life that he will never forget: Kaane wouldn’t be Kaane (yes, quite literally, he would still be named Shin-Kan) without Takata’s influence. Through training together, living together, and even having fun together, Kaane became Takata’s son in heart. Though Kaane has felt the same way, he never verbalized it that much, becoming quieter as he grew older and more lost in thought.
Eventually, Kaane grew up and graduated from the Academy with excellent marks in chakra control and the more abstract parts of his training. Now, with the funds he earns regularly from Genin work, he holds himself up in a low rent apartment in the village. Yoshi Takata lives in a different district, but Kaane is welcome whenever he pleases. As for his mother, once Kaane left, she disappeared into obscurity. No one really knows where she is, but Kaane hopes to find her some day.
