We sat for a time upon the mountain, talking of the past, whereupon my angst seemed to melt away in the setting light. It was one of the time where I truly felt alive in those days.
"So you want to know a secret about Tasukeru?" My sister asked me in a question that seemed to hold wonder on the edge of it.
"Sure!" I replied, feeling more like my young self than I have in ages. It was hard, down in the village, because of the visage of being older I had always needed to put on. Shit, Hokami was an old man so half the time I strolled around with a limp. "Is it the mountain?"
"No! I already told you that." She said through a laugh. It was contagious, or so it was to me, and it made me giggle. Whether it was because I realized that I had known her for only minutes and that I loved her or that the laugh was truly contagious, I wasn't sure. Decisions weren't on my mind at the moment. "You can see further if you stretch it. Like, squint your eyes and stretch y'know?"
I didn't know, but we both squinted our eyes. Nothing changed for me but for her, she held her squinty eyes for a while. Perhaps she could stretch her sight; I couldn't. My Tasukeru was still pretty weak. But, if she was right, spending time here on the mountain would be like putting disinfectant on a fresh wound: it helped it heal stronger. Nevertheless, my mind wasn't on Tasukeru, although at the time the matter did revolve around Tasukeru but that was all hidden underneath. I wouldn't know about that until later. My mind was revolving, and was slowly working up to, why exactly I had never met her until now. I was afraid to ask so I blurted it out. It wasn't a sentence but all condensed into one word:
"HeywhydidInotgrowupwithyou..?" The smile faded and she blinked away the stretching she was doing with Tasukeru. She looked down for a moment, attempting to pick her words carefully.
"They wanted to tell you, but I wanna do it." She said, still not looking at me. But, with both of our Tasukerus activated, we didn't have to look at each other to look at each other, if that makes sense.
"You're the reincarnation of a God. That's what mom says. That's why you had to go and live with different parents. They had to protect you. And then you ran away and..." She stopped, peering up at me, waiting to see my reaction.
I burst into laughter.
"But--haha! A god? Me?" But somewhere, deep down.
Very Deep Down.
I was scared to death.
