"To see life in between the seams,
is to awaken with a dream."
Inoryu closed the grimoire and set it beside him on his bed. Inoryu's mind was more clear than it has ever been before. This, he decided, was going to be his next training regimen in the art of illusion. Dreams. In order to implement his will into his subconscious, he focused on nothing but the jungle outside of Kusakagure, beyond the grassland. He thought of nothing else.
The world became an illuminated place. A mystical light revealed all of the jungle around him despite the shadows of the countless tree's leaves. He looked down at his hand and saw a tiny insect crawling along the space between his thumb and index finger and his vision turned to a clearer view. He shook it off but in his horror he could see that he was surrounded by these tiny insects. When did it happen? He wouldn't breath or else he would be inhaling the swarm of insects into his body. He dashed away, covering his mouth and nose, and was relieved to find that the insects weren't chasing him. He was merely where they were. He stopped and took a moment to recuperate.
He traversed the jungle cautiously, steadily abiding his time to allow him preparation for foes. Space and distance were his closest allies. He heard a rustling in the leaves above him and saw that he was being stalked by a large ape, two or three times larger than himself. The ape landed fifteen meters before Inoryu and slowly it closed in on its prey, baring its fangs aggressively. Saliva was dripping from its mouth. Inoryu unsheathed three kunai and threw it at the carnivorous ape, each one stuck into its torso and Inoryu only succeeded in pissing it off. The large ape picked up momentum towards the shinobi and swung its giant fist with massive force narrowly missing the agile ninja and cracking the tree trunk upon impact, tearing it to shreds. Inoryu had thrown three more kunai at the ape and strung quickly through a series of handseals. The ape swung wildly and struck Inoryu with a heavy fist only to reveal that it wasn't Inoryu at all but a substitution jutsu. The real Inoryu was hiding behind a massive tree trunk separating him from the carnivorous ape. A shrilling roar sent a shiver through Inoryu's body. He felt as if his heart dropped, and he was losing his confidence about being in the jungle in the first place. Fear started to fill in where his confidence was once solid. He was in cold sweat, listening to the ape continue to pound the substitution tree trunk that was Inoryu. He was hit by six of my kunai and it hadn't slowed down one bit. It just made him more agressive. I'm going to have to out run him. I could do it with a head start.
Inoryu took off in the opposite direction of the ape but the ape had heard him and took chase. Inoryu couldn't discern how far or where they were, all he knew was that he was running for his life, and the ape was relentless. This isn't the end. As he ran, Inoryu dug into his butt bag and pulled out a soldier pill, I won't let it end here. He swallowed the pill whole and he felt a sensation of power that he has never felt before. He turned around to face the carnivorous ape who attempted a close-line with the momentum it had gained. Inoryu rolled underneath it and faced the ape. He was stringing handseals in a kneeling position.
The ape stopped its movements as if a new foe had appeared before him, Jutsu success. Inoryu watched in satisfaction as the ape swung madly, frustrated with this invisible opponent surrounding him; to his sides. My turn, Inoryu threw a haymaker knowing that the illusion would mimic his movement. The gorilla took the invisible hit. And another, Inoryu threw another haymaker with his left this time without mercy. The gorilla's body was flown over to the left as if he had been hit by Inoryu's punch. And this! Inoryu clasped his hands together and raised them up to crash them down on the ape. The ape held his head as if he had a migraine, it was sitting down, helpless. And Inoryu allowed the demonic presence that haunted the ape to continue to torment him with its presence. The ape reached out slowly with a finger to touch the demonic entity and Inoryu threw another haymaker at the ape, landing the attack through the illusory demon. For now the ape was subdued. Inoryu observed the helpless ape with disdain, the six kunai embedded in its torso was not enough to subdue it. Inoryu turned and ran. The illusion vanished of the demon that haunted the ape vanished and it was too shaken to take chase. As he went, Inoryu could still feel the power of the soldier pill flowing through his chakra network.
The mind perceived this to be real, and not a dream. The reason is because, even though the dream was all in my head, it followed all of the rules of reality. And the proof was the complete terror I felt facing the ape. If my body had known that it was, in fact, dreaming, then I would've bent the laws of the universe through my will alone and would have never feared the ape. The fear was all too real. -Yamanaka, Inoryu
Inoryu stopped on a thick tree branch that he deemed was safe when suddenly the tree branch he was standing on gave way. He looked down to find that he was falling into the presence of a beaked terror, the same predatory bird that gashed a hole in his shoulder. As he fell it was surreal, like falling through a portal, and his body shook with the collision upon landing on the jungle floor. The seven foot bird squawked and aimed its beak at Inoryu's shoulder. Inoryu rolled out of the way of the bird's deadly beak and strung through a series of handseals. He spun in a circle and two Inoryus flanked around the bird, one to the left and the other to the right. To Inoryu's horror though, the bird saw through the illusion and kicked him straight back into a thick tree trunk. The predatory bird closed in on its prey and sent its beak through Inoryu's shoulder, he once again grimaced through the pain. Inoryu noticed that the beak was struck in the same exact place that had been struck a week before. This has happened before. His emotions were an incorporeal concoction of fear, terror, and brooding. This is where I take out a kunai and slice it from its throat through its lower jaw. Inoryu took a deep breath, suddenly calm despite having the large beak impaled through his shoulder. Somehow, at that instant, he knew it was a dream and the roles of Inoryu and the beaked terror were reversed. Inoryu had the bird pinned against the tree and impaled with his kunai.
For an instant...the universe did change. It wasn't I who was following the laws of the universe anymore, but instead, it was the universe following my will. And somehow I knew that my body reacted in its dreaming state, 'remembering' when the bird gashed my shoulder with a tingling, pinching sensation as a reminder.-Yamanaka, Inoryu
From five meters away, Inoryu had thrown two handfuls of shuriken and a kunai to finish off the predator. The Beaked Terror fell from the tree and its tongue fell from its mouth. Inoryu opened his eyes, but for the rest of the night, he imagined himself in the hospital going through the excruciating repercussions of using the soldier pill.
At that point, it was as if the dream kept going in my mind. I saw myself dealing with the after effects of the soldier pill, but in this state, I felt no pain. A difference considering how in the earlier stages of the dream I felt the full effect of fear and my body 'remembered' being stabbed by the Beaked Terror. Was the reason I felt no more pain as I watched myself coping in the hospital because at this point I had realized I had been dreaming, or was it because it was indeed at that stage considered 'awake'? This, I would like to study further. -Yamanaka, Inoryu
Inoryu exhaled deeply and closed the notebook that he had been writing in pertaining to his dream studies. The grass around him was picturesque dancing with the wind and it was natural for him to study and concentrate in his front yard. But he was done with his studies for now and needed some physical exercise. He put his notes aside and went into a stretch.
