“Nothing…” The onset of boredom begun to hit Zuruel. Although the tree was easy to spot thanks to the nature of grasslands, it did also mean that the area was rather dull and boring. As he trekked from tree to tree, he couldn’t help but sigh at the monotony of the situation. The area appeared to be void of colours or interesting shapes. Instead, he simply hiked along a grassy area that had the occasional pear tree. “Damn it." He hissed as he forced himself to continue inspecting the trees in the area.

“I will find you!” Zuruel hissed as he dismissed all the trees he had come across so far. He did, however, suddenly perk up as he spotted a rather large tree in the distance “Is this it!?” He smiled as he dashed over to the tree. Upon inspecting it, however, he realised that the tree was barley fifteen meters tall at most. “Curses it all.” Zuruel’s will was still strong despite the failure. At the very least, being this deep into the grasslands meant that he was beginning to see much larger trees than before.

Zuruel took another swig of water as he carried on inspecting the trees. A couple smaller trees did pop up, which he immediately dismissed. His focus, for the most part, was on the larger trees that looked as if they were either still growing or, around twenty meters tall. This allowed him to search faster, as he was able to swiftly dismiss trees that didn’t fit the Saddilia’s description. Even if he did come across a tiny Saddilia, if it hadn’t matured, it probably wouldn’t have grown any useful nuts anyway. That was his logic.

Zuruel begun to groan. Rather than give up, however, he continued searching the grassy field. Each time he came across a tree, he inspect it carefully for the nuts in question. This fabled Saddilia tree’s nuts were useful to him. “Must find it…” He was determined. Rather than giving in to boredom, he continued searching up and down the grassy field, while each time moving slightly towards the right. If he continued doing this, eventually, he’d have to find the tree in question.

“No luck.” Zuruel grimaced. He wasn’t finding many large trees and time was being wasted sorting through the smaller ones. A new strategy was in order. Zuruel dashed straight for the centre of the grasslands, which he found thanks to his ability to sense magnetic North. Once there, he looked around. Immediately, he noticed a massive amount of tall trees. Way more than before. Most likely, he assumed this was due to the fact that this particular area had an abundance of sunshine and more rainfall than the outskirts.

Zuruel inspected the trees one by one. A couple fit the description, however, they clearly weren’t Saddilia. These false positives ended up slowing down the search. There was, however, no choice. Zuruel was meticulous in his search due to the rarity of the Saddilia tree. He couldn’t risk missing this tree, as he might never be able to find another again if he ticked its location off his search list. Instead, he was careful and focused. Mentally, he only cross an area off his list if he was absolutely certain that it did not contain the tree in question.

Zuruel’s long and arduous search continued. Whereas before he was having trouble spotting any large trees, now, there was an abundance of them. This meant that he wasted quite a bit of time checking each and every one. “Must… Go on.” He mumbled to himself. Despite the tiresome and boring act, he continued inspecting each tree. He had to. A single Saddilia tree could easily be hiding amidst this grassy forest of trees. Sucking in his pride and pushing back the thoughts of boredom, he continued trekking along the area and inspect all the tall trees.

After a few hours passed, Zuruel realised that he’d need a new strategy if he ever wanted to find the Saddilia tree. He whipped out his book on Botany and flipped to the page about Saddilia. Upon picking up on the fact that the tree bore red wood, Zuruel smiled and searched around the area. Now, he could eliminate the dark grey and brownish tree trunks in favour of anything reddish in colour. Immediately, this seemed to help Zuruel pick up his search pace.

“Red trunk… Red trunk…” Zuruel begun to spot reddish trees in the distance. A closer inspection, however, revealed these to just be a dark brown in colour. A waste of time. He continued his search by spiralling outwards from his original starting location at the centre of the grasslands. This meant that there was no way that he would miss any trees thanks to the fact that he was covering every inch of the ground. No matter what, the Saddilia tree was going to be found by him.

“Over there!” Zuruel snapped with excitement. He dashed over to a tree in the distance that appeared to have a solid red trunk. As he inspected it, however, he realised that the tree was far too skinny and short to fit the description. To be the Saddilia tree, it had to be dark red and quite tall. Hissing at his luck, Zuruel dismissed the tree and continued searching. He made a lap around the area and inspected everything, until eventually, increasing his search radius's outer perimeter by an extra few meters.

As Zuruel continued his search, night begun to fall. This made things particularly difficult, as anything with a reddish tint now appeared a lot darker and almost brownish in colour. With his keen observational skills, however, Zuruel wouldn’t be fooled for the moment. He did, unfortunately, have to compensate for this by inspecting each tree even closer in order to spot its true colour. Like before, this caused a lot of false positives to crop up and wasted time. As he searched, he begun to ponder over a new strategy that may be able to help him even further.

Zuruel carried on with his search and as he did, felt the onset of exhaustion creeping in. He realised that he wasn’t as mentally sharp as before. Trees that he could easily dismiss before were taking him twice as long to inspect and trees that didn’t fit the description at all still confused him at times. He searched for around half an hour longer before giving up. He set up camp at the location he stopped in to ensure that he wouldn’t lose his place before falling asleep next to a tree. He needed rest and sunlight.

As dawn broke, Zuruel opened his groggy eyes with an exhausted yawn. Rather than complaining, however, he took a quick swig of water, popped some fruit into his mouth and continued searching. “Red bark…” He told himself. With the area illuminated by the sunlight, he was finding it infinitely easier to spot the trees with red barks. Unfortunately, the only issue seemed to be the fact that quite a few of these red trees still didn’t fit the description entirely. Most of them were simply too light of a shade.

Not wanting to give up, Zuruel continued his arduous journey. His swift eyes darted from tree to tree, instantly dismissing anything that wasn’t a red or maroon colour. When he did spot something that fit the bill, his eyes trailed the tree upwards. If it was too short, it was dismissed. If it was tall enough to deserve a second glance, he approached the tree and inspected it with his eyes and hands whilst cross referencing the details with his book of Botany. It was a technique that allowed him to go through the trees at a fast pace.

Although Zuruel had gone through a rather large chunk of the grasslands, he still hadn’t dented even twenty percent of it. His eyes were also beginning to strain from all the darting around. To remedy this, every few minutes as he searched, he stopped and shut his eyes for a few moments. This was to give them some rest before they continued scanning through all the trees in the area again. For the moment, his sense of sight was his strongest weapon. He couldn’t afford to lose it.

As before, Zuruel continued with his technique. Glancing from tree to tree very swiftly, only ever stopping if the colour red or marron caught his eye. He then focused on the tree for a moment to ensure that it was a dark shade of red, before glancing upwards. He then judged the height of the tree carefully to see if it fulfilled the previous requirements. Unlike before, however, Zuruel was now a lot harsher with his requirements. If the tree was any less than twenty meters tall, even by a meter, he dismissed it. He didn’t want to take a chance, but the book of botany clearly stated that the Saddilia tree wouldn’t bear any nuts anyway unless it was fully grown.

Zuruel searched and searched. His feet were beginning to blister from all the walking. Even so, he carried on with a stiff upper lip. The prize was simply too tempting. “Oh?” His body perked up as his eyes scanned every feature of a tree in the distance. It matched his description. “This is it!” He made a mad dash for the tree and inspected it in all its entirety. He even double check his book. This was definitely a Saddilia tree. Unfortunately for Zuruel, it bore no nuts. Mostly likely, it had been harvested clean. He had to keep looking.

Zuruel slammed his fist into the tree. He was tempted to hack it with his katana, but decided to show restraint. This location would be important for him the next time the tree bloomed nuts. “Let’s see.” Zuruel set off in search for another Saddilia tree. If one was here, then likely, another must be close by. As he searched, the image of the tree popped into his head. He remembered how it had something the book had failed to mention. Blue leaves on each branch.

Although the previous failed search had disheartened Zuruel for a moment, he was now searching even more confidently. The tree had given him an important hint. As he searched for dark red trunks now, while completely ignoring the lighter ones, his eyes also scanned for trees with oddly coloured blue leaves. Even with a quick glance, this would be easy to spot due to the colour contrast between the red and blue. Every time he spotted something that fit this description, he immediately checked for the height of the tree to make sure that it was tall enough.
