Neoku had just recently joined up at the hidden mist kenjutsu dojo. Unfortunately for him, this was his first actual lesson outside the stance that he had already learned. When he showed up, his sensei asked him to demonstrate what he’d already known, with his own sword skills. This consisted of a few menial slashes that held very little discipline to them. When she saw this, she immediately showed him to an old wooden practice dummy. It was old and beaten in many places, ultimately taking a way from the initial glamour he thought this consisted of.
“Neoku,” she said, calling him by his first name “you need to practice your quick strike. As a practitioner of battojutsu, you should know that the ability to draw your sword determines how affectively you can use any techniques. Practice here for an hour. I’ll return then.” She then left quickly, leaving him alone in the dojo.
After a moment had passed by, Neoku decided that he’d try drawing his sword once. Rising to his feet, he put his hand over his sheath. Then, he gripped the handle of his sword with his right hand. He quckly pulled out with his right hand, allowing the sword to come freely form the sheath. The way he had pulled on the sword had caused it to tear from the sheath rather slow and awkwardly. He figured that this wouldn’t do. Neoku considered himself a full pledged warrior of the Akumu. Even while he was training, his mentality was of that of a trained veteran. All this, he thought to himself, despite his belief in his other half being weaker. Resheathing his sword, he dropped into the battojutsu stance and prepared to pull the sword out again. This time, when he pulled his sword from the sheath, he pulled it as hard as he could and angled it a bit. The blade of his katana slipped out the sheath a little faster. His arm was already getting tired from the effort though. Instead of quitting to rest like most would, he kept going. For the next half an hour, he continued practing pulling his sword from the sheath, then quickly resheathing it. Each individual draw of his sword made a slight scraping sound as it passed slowly in and out of the sheath. The sound was annoying in his ear. Each sound was long a dragged out. He could count each individual scraping sound amidst his draw. That was a really bad sign. Neoku didn’t need to be a master to know that the sounds meant his draw was too slow. His arm was beginning to hurt less though.
Quickly, he dropped back into the battojutsu stance. Neoku began to rip his sword from the sheath and make a slicing motion in the air every time he drew out. At first this motion was awkward and slow, but it gradually sped up. He drew out once more and slashed at the air. His attack lacked any kind of direction, but now there was potential for some kind of force. He could make an attack out his motion, not like before.
Starting once more, Neoku dropped into his battojutsu stance and quickly ripped his sword from the sheath. As he did so, he pulled so hard that he actually pulled a muscle in his arm. Just as that happened, the sensei of the dojo reappeared. Putting up a strong front, he demonstrated what he could do. He continued to practice his striking exercises before her, though it kept causing slight pain to his arm. After a while, she told him to stop. Immediately, he stopped and stared at her and had to wonder what she would say, but she had yet to say a word.
