"Oh..." was the only thing Maria had managed to enunciate before all hell broke loose. However, considering the situation one can reasonably assume what was to follow would not be "Oh, deary me!" In fact, a lengthy string of oaths and curses might be better applicable.
Her attacks were fended off with ease, using some sort of underhanded grip over significantly smaller weapons that allowed them to deflect and redirect her movements. And even as she scrambled to retrieve her lost weapon, a quintet of paired dragons of lightning roared towards her position. Literally, they roared. Like, with a noise and everything. Weird what chakra was capable of.
She rand full tilt in the opposite direction, as any remotely sane person would. Unfortunately she was outpaced. Not by much, if she were still in the Gate could possibly have outrun them, or of she hadn't already used two of her three daily allotted instantaneous body movements. But no, she was just that one second too slow. The first pair converged, and exploded behind her, blasting her forward where she rolled to he side. Her neck stung.
The next blast just to her side, with a third explosion tossing her yet further like some twisted lightningrod ragdoll. She struggled to her feet, only to be blown away for a fourth time, then a fifth. The concussive force hurt, the fairly minor electrical burns hurt, but her neck was in absolute agony. She got about as far as up to her knees trying to stand, but the electricity still coursing through her body made her weak and unresponsive. She spat out the bolt.
"That...really hurts, oh but I've had better days." She smiled grimly, though it looked more like a scowl of pain. Which it kind of also was. "Come to think of it, the funny thing is that I've had worse. Seems like these days I undertake a task and if I'm not getting bashed around or blown up I'm just not doing it right. Fuck my life."
She tried to throw her bolts at the entities, but her fingers were too shaky, and she dropped all three to sit beside the first.
"Well, looks I've lost the battle. I can't move. Should have known better than to pick a fight with a bunch of...ghosts, or whatever you are. Kinda sucks that I'm probably gonna die here, when all I wanted to do was become strong enough to rescue my friend. Suppose I never really deserved whatever power you guys...or girls...whatever, had to offer.
She grimaced, tried to stand. She was a thief and a con artist, but she was a ninja. The least she could do was to die with a little dignity. No good, she could only maintain this kneeling position. She bowed her head low. Crap. Then again how could she have expected things to end any other way? Her parents had killed each other, she was wanted dead by the wealthy and powerful in most countries, her only real friend had been taken from her. Where was the happily ever after there?
"My life is yours, not that I can do anything about it."
