"Are you ready this time, Kaoru?!"

Angrily, I spat at the ground to my right. Thumping aches bloomed throughout my body, painful reminders of my continued failure. I took a couple more ragged breaths, glaring at Akihiko through locks of hair that were beginning to moisten with my continued exertion. Half of me wanted to take my jacket off, but underneath my outfit was just a little too scant for me to feel comfortable with the kid ogling me in it alone.

And so I endured the heat, keeping my eyes on him at all times, gritting my teeth and watching for any sudden movement from the kid who was way too fucking fast to be at all real. There he was, a smug smile on his face, his lax posture giving away none of just how speedily he could be right at my face, no matter how hard I stared at him. I had been trying to wipe that smirk off of his face all afternoon, with little success. The longer we had progressed, the more he had unleashed his celerity, till I was being hammered by blows from all angles and styles and saw virtually none of them.

"You are not fast enough." He said to me again, for like the bazillionth time today. It was a mantra that echoed in every recess he granted me, and it ground on my nerves; I had enough intelligence to realize that this was intentional. He knew how much it pissed me off, and he was using it as an incentive to achieve his goal - which seemed to just get me on his level, for whatever reason. I almost felt like I was taking advantage of the kid, since he seemed to hold a little something for me, but then a particularly resonant blow ached in my left shoulder again; as I clutched it with my gauntlet-clad fist, I dashed any sympathy to the metaphorical rocks.

"WATCH!" He commanded, and in a panic that I had learned was quite reasonable I looked up; I had hardly caught vision of his frame before he zipped in ten meters - I was barely able to discern that, even - and then another, and another - he had been quite a way across the clearing, yeah. Desperately, I flicked my gaze toward every shunshin and its end point, trying to figure out where he would bloom into existence next, but it seemed random, even if it tended to zig-zag. I took a semi-voluntary step back, bringing my arms up to defend, but as blondie had been informing me all day, it is the eyes that matter most.

But my eyes were fucking failing me, so a shit load of good that was. When he appeared, he was to my right - over the course of a few hours Akihiko had told me I was improving, and maybe I was just being a pessimist, but I hardly noticed it. I managed to catch him in my peripheral vision, snagging his briefly buzzing form and flicking my head sideways to try and judge his actions appropriately. His right leg was up and already spinning towards me in a reverse-roundhouse kick before I really knew what was going on. I flung my two-handed block up to face him, carrying most of my torso with it.

I barely reached him; my shoulder took some of the impact too, and I was beat backwards into a stagger by his swing. Oh, how dumb I'd been thinking I was matching him earlier - it seemed like the kid had been going easy on me before, which was infuriating and embarrassing in equal measure. Another blow was added to the multitude by his strike, another ache springing up in my right shoulder and forearm where I'd taken the hit. Momentarily I was off-balance, but the question was, would I be able to read the inevitable follow-up?[/ul][/justify]

Momentarily I was off-balance, shoulder and arm aching, but the real question was, would I be able to read the inevitable follow-up? At first Akihiko's blows had been singular before he allowed me reprieve, but the smirking teen had taken to enhancing his drill with a follow-up after about the thirteenth hit I'd endured - how I remembered that number was a mystery to me, but I guess one thing my primitive mind remembered well was pain. Still, it wasn't much helping me in this seemingly endless quest to get faster - fuck, what did this kid expect of me in one day? Was he just gonna push me till I collapsed?

I had been staggered, being thrown to the left under the momentary force of Akihiko's kick that had fortunately slid off me doing relatively little harm, but I knew something else was about to arrive. Desperately I cast my eyes up once more, teeth gritted with the amount of effort I was constantly exerting to glean every last little bit of responsiveness out of my aching body. Perhaps I was steadily getting faster overtime; I managed to catch the kid with his foot still dropping to the floor, but hence began the tricky part; figuring out exactly how it was he was next going to assault me.

He planted his kicking foot down so that his entire stance was now more or less side-on to me, which, at the distance I had now stepped away, was not at all practical. He simply could not hit me from how far away I was; I was beyond his reach. So it was more than likely that a step of some sorts was about to originate - I only had to catch from where. I had just about steadied myself by this point, but that did not necessitate that I would be stable or quick enough to dodge, especially not if I was caught unawares by its direction.

In the end, it was actually pretty obvious, but it was the early signs that mattered, and gave that tiny little extra edge. I saw his left shoulder - the furthest one from me - brought into view just past the nearer one, indicating that he was turning towards me. Indeed, I saw his entire body turn around, and by that point I was properly grounded. He was facing me, but exactly what would his next attack be?

As it turns out, his revolution was a bit fuller than I expected. Because of just how fast blondie was, I had to move almost at the same time as him in order to effectively counteract him, which made shit really fucking difficult when his fighting was varied and sometimes formless. Still, this attack was fairly predictable; he did not stop to face me flat, but instead continued to move with the turn, and I saw his left fist balled very hard indeed, a detail that told me it would be the attacking arm. Because of the swinging motion of his body, I could only assume that he intended a sideways extension, and so I began to bring my own body up and backward...

Early on in his punch's flight, I saw it tilt upward, and I knew it was coming for my poor, beautiful face - an area he had thus far largely avoided. I really hoped that wasn't significant. All it meant was that I also threw back the area above my chest, tilting it over to avoid the swipe of his bony, deceptively powerful fist. It beat the air where my cheek had been moments previously, but was no longer. I realized how fluidly I had actually managed to dodge that assault as I came back around to face him dead on as his punch retracted - it had seemed, for a moment, almost as though the whole thing had been choreographed, which I figured was a good thing. I realized how fluidly I had actually managed to dodge that assault as I came back around to face him dead on as his punch retracted - it had seemed, for a moment, almost as though the whole thing had been choreographed, which I figured was a good thing. It meant I was becoming more responsive. The more unfortunate of the two almost simultaneous realizations in that moment was the fact that Akihiko was showing no signs of backing off. Nope, that solemn look on his face told me he was most definitely going to continue in his assault, which meant I was still not done. No rest for the wicked. Fuck's sake.

I had almost let myself relax, but fortunately I was not such an amateur at open combat to expect it to move with any sort of consistency or convenience, and something in the back of my head had told me that blondie here would amp up his attack's severity once I showed any sign of being able to counter it. I swung my body back into place, turning right around to face him - my jade eyes kept locked on his whole body, reading it for any sign of hostile motion as his previous arm retracted. I now held the tiniest of advantages - I was facing his side front-on. Effectively half of his body was out of the question for any threatening activity - or at least, it would be vastly slowed down.

That did not seem to be a problem for him. From the lowest points of my vision I saw his rear leg scoot inwards, bringing his whole posture up a notch - I was still taller than him - and saw his back arm tuck in behind his spine. A curious posture, but he was still moving inward - but I could not step till I found his attack. Fortunately, it was fairly straight-forward, a clone of the previous strike, though a little more attentive and speedy, and this told me that it would not be the only of its kind; I responded as such.

Later on I would be a little proud of just how much control was needed for the parry I came up with, but at the time it just felt... natural, fluent and smooth. I saw his fist blooming in my vision, and my right arm just naturally came up to take it in hand - I clutched it with my gauntlet-clad fist, locking it in place. Or at least I thought so. The kid was easily able to snatch it back, out of my iron grip, and fire again - lower, this time, more towards my gut. It was a simple matter of redirecting my own hand downwards, though that way of describing it did not do the precision of the matter any justice - the collision of two such areas at such high speed was quite a difficult thing to achieve.

Still, I managed to catch the fist again, and it beat solidly at my hand, though to much lesser effect than if it had been allowed to hit my body. I knew I wasn't imagining it when I reckoned Akihiko sped up the more he punched in succession, though - I didn't have time to wrap my fingers over this blow before it was just entirely gone. Still, I kept my eyes on him the entire time - quickly I scanned him over, checking for an adjustment of posture, but none could be found. The only weapon he was using was his left arm.

Still, it was too quick for my right arm alone to defend against. I took a step back to give myself some more room as I saw a third blow come at me, high this time, near my neck - my own left limb was brought across to take the hit on, though the blocking of it was crude, merely swinging across its path to bash it out of the way - primitive, but effective (kinda like myself). Momentarily set off balance, then, Akihiko had to readjust myself, and I drank in the tiny pause greedily, trying to bring my mind back to the present, keeping myself aware. Momentarily set off balance, then, Akihiko had to readjust myself, and I drank in the tiny pause greedily, trying to bring my mind back to the present, keeping myself aware. I staggered back another step. Blondie was wide open, his stance torn apart a bit by my parry, but I knew that this weakness would not last long, or else he would transfer the seeming failure into a continuation of his assault. As I watched, adrenaline coursing through my body, I saw that it was the latter that eventuated.

Stepping out with his left foot, his corresponding arm having been batted away from his sideways stance, Akihiko had almost come to face me front on, though momentum was still moving through the right side of his body, and I saw a tweak of his hip that alerted me to the presence of a kick. Indeed, his whole right side lifted slightly, his right leg brought in and up in front of his waist - but it was stunted there, and so I knew this was not a high kick; it was to be a thrust. Blondie's whole body rolled over as he ejected the leg from its coiled loft, and it shot out towards me, quite straight-forward and direct but very, very fast.

The blunt of his sole sailed in towards my gut, but thankfully I was able to adjust myself to nullify his attack, having received early intel on it. I pulled my own right hip backwards, twisting around in an equal and opposite arc that brought my stomach away from the strike's path, leaving only empty air for it to hit - now it was me that was facing sideways, also, and momentarily Akihiko's back was facing towards me - a tantalizing target, but not one I thought I could hit without shattering his poor little spine, and he had never quite annoyed me that much.

Still, it was only evident for the barest of moments before it was retracted in a reverse motion and planted down, till Akihiko's feet were in rather close. The message he gave for his next intention was in the way that his body was now swinging in reverse. He glanced over his shoulder at me, and I knew he was asserting my position as a target - why, if he was not about to immediately lose sight of me? I knew that he would momentarily be facing away from me. The question is, would he step out, or kick, or what? I was close enough for him to kick, that was for damn sure.

I knew it was going to be a leg-based attack as I saw his arms moving like counterweights, allowing him to heft his far leg - the left one - up again, for a follow-up strike, an attack that could only really be one of his reverse-roundhouse attacks I had observed as habitual throughout the course of the day. Indeed, once I caught true sight of the kick's path it was the back of his leg I observed, swinging in at roughly shoulder-or-neck height, intensely fast. Fortunately, because of my observations - again - I had already formulated a counter strategy.

It was fairly straightforward, but it worked (again, kinda like me). All I had to do was lean forward - sort of the reverse of my previous dodging of such a kick. I bent over at the hip, and the powerful swing rushed over the back of my head - I felt it stir my orange locks as it whistled by, but it failed to hurt me. I brought myself up as quickly as possible, as I knew on the end of this attack the kid would likely be facing me in full, and I twisted violently, searching his body for motion...

But he was idle. Merely smiling at me.[/ul][/justify]

Description: NOTE: Only works when the user is parries with their gloves or hands. When the user learns this technique, depending on what technique an opponent hits against them the user is able to parry without taking a hit. This means in order to parry attacks that are "C" rank, the user must know Parrying With the Gloves "C" rank. The problem with this technique is that the user will not know if they can parry an attack or not. It the user parries an attack that the user is incapable of doing so the attack goes through and smashes into the user. If the user is able to, then the user may simply move the attack to another direction making a counter come easier against the opponent.
Limit: Must learn in a gym that teaches Bokushingu (Boxing), Must know Upright Stance or Semi-Crouch, Must know Heightened Perception per rank. This means to learn Parrying With the Gloves the user must know Heightened Perception of equal rank first.[/ul]

I brought myself up as quickly as possible, as I knew on the end of this attack the kid would likely be facing me in full, and I twisted violently, searching his body for motion... But he was idle. His arms were folded, his posture relaxed; he was merely smiling at me. "Your improvement is prodigious." He proclaimed, and I looked away, trying to deflect the compliment and only half succeeding; a pleased little smile appeared on my face, one that I tried to hide for its brief lifespan.

"Still, you lack precision."

"Fuck you."

How dare he build me up just to knock me down like that - the words escaped me before I even knew of their existence. Still, after a moment I had the decency to look apologetic; kid didn't deserve that kinda treatment, it wasn't right. He was helping me, and I did feel just a little faster even since this morning. "Right. I suppose we fix that now?" "Indeed we do." He confirmed, perhaps enjoying the particle a little too much. "Okay how?" Curtly, unamused. He stole two steps of my personal space, coming in very close, and mildly assumed his own boxing stance. Irritably, I mirrored him, needing no words.

"Block." He commanded.

"Wh-"

Nope, too late. Motionless till it was already on its way, a jab from his tape-wrapped fist was blooming in my vision, impossibly quick. I saw it, and instantly a flare of adrenaline spiked my body; my inner gladiator took immediate sovereignty over my left arm, and I swung it across my open side to beat at the impending fist. The action was brazen - like ninety percent of all of mine - but it worked: My forearm collided with his own, and inches from my face the threat was sent sailing off course. Then it was, yanno, gone, brought back to its pre-flight position.

Akihiko gusted a sigh as I brought my arm away, back down to its own seat. "No." He reprimanded, and I was instantly ticked, defensive as fuck. "What?!" I demanded, easing my stance off from him a little with my affrontedness. "Your blocks work -" "Damn right!" "- but they are not nearly as efficient as they could be." I was about to argue, but I guess the kid had a point. I had only ever known how to just sorta toss my limbs at an impending blow to parry it - it was crude, and I supposed there were situations in which it was not ideal.

"It is crude, and there are situations in which this is not ideal."

Fuckin' hell really?

"For example, with your gauntlets you may be able to block a blade with your fists, but your arms will not do."

I sighed, but had to concede the point. Fighting anything sharp was a weakness of mine, and one that needed correcting. "So, what then?" I asked, and he smiled, and I knew a lecture was coming. "Instead of using your forearms, or elbow, or whatever happens to hit the target, I want you to focus on using your hands. I will punch with my right hand, and I want you to block with the back of your left. It does not need to be an exaggerated motion, it merely needs to prevent me from hitting you. Understand?"

I nodded. "Yeah." "Then show me!" Just like that, his fist moved, and this time I had to fucking think about how I was blocking it. Ugh. As I watched his fist, I also kinda watched mine from my peripheral vision, and I had to calculate a path - the moment of impact. It seemed like a hassle in the moment, but then I put it into practice, moving my arm just a little and bumping his fist with the rear plate of my gauntlets, beating away the attack. I knew full well that he had been going easy on me, but when he moved his arm back he smiled and nodded. "Good."[/ul][/justify]

"Of course, you must realize I was going easy on you."

Yep.

He stepped back, retracting his posture; he held himself casually, then, and observed me in such a way that I knew another informative expound was on its way. "The issue is that you have developed a crude method of fighting, living by it so much that it has ingrained itself into your very being, where you feel as though you and it are incorrigible parts of a whole." He so spoke, and the truth of his words, however laden in fanciful linguistics they may have been, rang true. It had gotten to a point where combat was as instinctive a practice as walking; I didn't have to think about it, it just sorta... happened.

"But I can tell you, Kaoru, that brute strength and animal instinct can only get you so far." He smirked, but somehow it was an understanding smirk, and oddly, I wasn't all that angered. Probably because of just how accurate I knew it all to be. I had to look down a little bit. This was a mistake.

"REACT!"

Instantly, my gaze flicked up; fortunately I had not dropped my stance, for I found that again, as he seemed to do in every opportune moment of weakness, Akihiko had invaded my space and stepped inward to within punching distance. The aforementioned animal instinct flared inside of me, demanding movement from my body - crude movement, some small part of my brain said. Just place something between you and the impending threat, or else smash its face in if it couldn't hit you first.

Blondie here had his forward arm raised as a preparatory counterbalance, loose and floating, with his attacking arm lifted over his shoulder and coiled back. I knew all too well just how fast that punch could suddenly be in my face, but there was a pregnant, expectant moment in which nothing happened, and time seemed to slow between the both of us. His momentum sorta slowed down, as did mine, but this lasted only microseconds before his eyes hit mine and he shouted again.

"THINK!"

See that was a little harder for my primitive brain. Just from proprioception I knew sorta where my arms were floating; my left was hanging further forward, my right arm clutched in towards my chest (for it was, of course, my punching arm). So, in that tiny opportunity Akihiko gave me to work out my plan of action, I had to... yanno... do that. He was attacking with his right arm, so I supposed I would use my left to defend, as it was closest - as I thought this, my vision aligned to properly see both ligaments, both the impending attack and the arm I was meant to be using to block it.

Fortunately, my left arm seemed to be more inside my stance than his attack was, so it was a simple matter of bringing it outward to clash with his punch. The thing was, his forward limb was useless, right? He wasn't gonna be doing anything with it. Perhaps I couldn't say the same for my other arm.

And then, abruptly, bam. He moved his fist, striking out with a stupid amount of speed. What was awesome though is that I was ready for it, and my plated glove met it smoothly, pushing the arm just enough outward that it whistled past my face, catching a couple of stray locks of hair, maybe, but those couldn't feel pain. Ha. The finality of the motion, however, was to transfer the backward momentum he was forcing on the left side of my body to my advantage.

I did so by performing a simple one-armed hook with my thus far unoccupied fist forth in and up under his chin, stopping just short of his prettyboy face. Then the action abruptly stopped, and that was the pose we were left in. At first blondie glanced down at my fist, before looking back up at me and smirking.

"Good." He again proclaimed.[/ul][/justify]
