Seeing how the people themselves would be pointing towards the center of the sphere, the spikes would only puncture the parts of the body that were close to the center, probably only amounting to the shoulders and head. While this would be enough to kill any person, survival would be possible because they would still have control over the functions of their upper body. To remedy this, Shiki changed the direction of the spikes to point towards the deepest part of the pit. This way, there would be no escape, for no matter how much one moved the spikes would be directed towards their feet and would inevitably pass through their body.
Now satisfied, Shiki went in search of a victim, soon finding a few rats crawling along the streets of Iwa. Returning to the mountain, he knocked the rats unconscious with a blow to the head and placed one in the center of the pit. Not caring to use handseals, Shiki took his time while constricting the walls around the creature. He had yet to try this and was concentrating on how to direct the spikes as well as moving the walls so they moved in proportion to the space they were converging on.
This was to ensure that the space did not close prematurely, before the spikes could reach their target. Should he close the sides too fast the spikes would converge at a much thinner cone which would reduce the amount of damage a single spike would cause. On the flipside, lowering the ceiling too fast would mean that some would not even be able to reach the target before they touched the bottom. In any case, using a small animal helped him greatly in improving his aim. He would stop the spikes when the last tip hit the bottom and in a sort undo the jutsu, revealing the holey corpse of the rodent.
The first try only 60% of the spikes connected (Shiki could tell by the number of holes). Letting out a sigh, Shiki returned to the city, figuring he would have to capture more test subjects. After combing the alleys a few times and checking trash bins, he was able to obtain 15 rats. Hoping it was enough, he returned to the pre-made pit and continued his aiming practice. He had gotten all the spikes to hit the rat within 10 tries, and was able to hit with 90% accuracy on the 5 successive attempts. It would be good to note that throughout this time Shiki did not perform the jutsu at full speed, nor did he once perform the entire jutsu without stopping.
It was nearing the night, and Shiki had a sudden urge to test the effectiveness of the technique in a more realistic setting. Scanning through the scroll one more time, he noted that only 5 handseals were required for this technique: Rat, Dragon, Horse, Bird, and lastly Snake. He mimed his way through the handseals, not to perform the jutsu but rather to memorize the sequence. Feeling lucky, he leapt down to the lower district of Iwagakure…
