For much of the rest of the day I travelled around gaining insight as to the several dialects of the common language. It was generally statistician work because there were plenty of people who didn't wish to tell where they were from, whose dialect didn't match the places they had lived (which may be attributed to one's parents' dialects...will have to do some more thought on that later), or where there were general gaps in the statistics. Generally I had gained an understanding of three dialects which, at first, doesn't seem like much but much of these were sweeping dialects, such as North or South. I would have to gain some further insight to narrow them down.
The next day I decided to repeat my experiment but to be much more precise. Ask for village names, locations relative to the capital or other lands, and specific places they've travelled to or lived in. I met someone whom I talked to yesterday that had given me some grief..
"Excuse me, sir."
"You again. What, what do you want?"
"Can you tell me the village that you're from?"
"This again? Look I told you I was from Hi no Kuni?"
"Yes but can you tell me what village you are from in Hi? Perhaps also it's location relative to the capital?"
"I lived in a village called Mo village, some ways south of the capital, and just east of the border." I took a mental note.
"Thank you, and which route did you take when you travelled here?"
"The major road, same as anyone I guess." I would have to look at the major road from Hi to Oto and see where it would have taken him on the map. Perhaps with all the variables plugged in I could finally solve for the end-all equation that would be able to tell where anyone's been just by their dialect.
