Description: The user with fortune telling is familiar with numerous devices and methods, such as tarot cards, palm reading, interpreting the flight of sparrows or the arrangement of a sacrificed animal's entrails, and so forth. At least, the user is familiar enough with these practices to make him appear to be an authentic soothsayer. (Even if legitimate fortune telling exists, this skill does not allow a character to make accurate predictions. It confers no magical powers.) The user makes up the prediction he wishes to tell. A successful skill check indicates that the user's customer or client believes the fortune he was told to be authentic. If the check fails the sham is discovered in some way, or the prediction is simply too outrageous or unbelievable in some way. Telling a peasant he will be king one day is pretty wacky, but he will want to believe that his newborn son will one day be a great hero. If the fortune teller rolls a natural 1 on his skill check, a Game Master should make every attempt to see that the event the user predicted actually comes true. This can certainly lead to some interesting adventures. Each time learned user gets 5 die roll to increase the skill.

"The cards will answer your question." She said. The slight tilt in her head made shadows dance across her mature face, even in the sun, and the effect it caused made Ranako smile, despite herself. The woman looked like a real fortune teller.

The first card she turned over was an odd image: a robed man, holding four- no, five swords, with another two behind him. He was tiptoeing away from a far-off town, and looking back on it while he did, maybe in trepidation.

"Seven of swords."The woman said, "I see running from something." She looked up at Ranako and gave her another measured stare. "A situation, perhaps? Or society as a whole?" She looked at Ranako, and her eyes sparkled. "Yes, that's it. Presently, you find your situation is fine as is."

Ran supposed it applied. No, more than supposed- she did live in a shack. Though, she hated to see herself compared to the thief on the card. The girl stared at the cards, wondering what it meant. Was the card there always some sort of representation of the present self? How had the woman come up with the pattern in the first place? The shape and number of cards left her mesmerised- she couldn't place how the fortune teller was working, and it made her all the more curious.

The woman turned over the card on top of it- more swords. A blindfolded woman, sitting on a chair facing away from the sea and holding two swords across her chest. The moon in the background was striking. "Two of swords." The woman continued. "It seems the root of your current dilemma is in your own attitudes. Blocking your emotions, avoiding the truth… does that at all seem familiar to you, sweet?"

"No, no." Ranako denied, immediately defensive. The fortune teller gave her a knowing smile, then said, "The cards never lie. Well, moving on." And with that, she turned over the next card, leaving an indignant Ran in the chair in front of her. "Acting in your own self-interest… that seems to be quite the theme for you." The card was a man holding three swords, two at his feet and two seemingly distraught men behind him. She laughed, then her face mellowed. "Well, no matter, we all do, sometimes. It can be the best thing, especially in the world we live in. But the cards tell me that whatever problem you're facing-" She gestured at Ranako, "-is caused by that."

"How do the cards tell you that?" Ranako snapped. She was self-conscious, defensive and immensely curious, all in one, and keeping her mouth shut drained her. Moreover, she wanted to know how it worked. Right now, the woman was only flipping cards and telling her what they meant. If there was magic- real magic- she wanted to learn it.
The fortune teller only laughed, tinkling and bitter all at once. "I can't reveal my secrets, now. Not for free, anyway." She made a coy glance off the side, pretending to eye a couple and child walking down the streets. Ran scoffed. Money, was it? That was what it took to become a mystic?

"Alright." She said, rifling through her cloak for a wallet. The mystic's attention was suddenly captured as she pulled out a stack of Ryo. Once the woman had safely tucked away her new stack of money, she folded her arms over her chest and breathed a sigh.

"So, you really want to learn about this stuff?" When Ran nodded, she continued, "I don't mind. You don't seem like you'd… tell. Or have anyone to tell, really."

Before Ran could protest the woman pressed on, pointing at the first card she had flipped. "The first card is supposed to represent the current situation. You pulled the seven of swords. In our circles it's usually taken to refer to some sort of separation, what with the man running away from society. It could mean a lot of other things, too. You can usually find something for the customer to relate to in a couple of guesses."

The last part bugged Ran, but she let the woman continue. "It takes a while to learn what all the cards means. If you don't remember at first, just look and guess. Call it 'feeling the magic'. Spread enough vague hints and the customer will usually suggest something for you. Most aren't as quiet as you, y'know."

Suddenly, Ran spoke up. "So, so this whole thing- it's not the cards talking to you?" The fortune teller sucked in a breath through her teeth. "Well, you can call it that. Maybe? There's interpretation in it. Take your second one. The blindfolded girl. That one's straightforward. She's blindfolded, and that's what it means. Think of the swords as… a fancy accessory; a boost for the mystery factor. It's all about seeing the reality behind that. That's kind of mystic, isn't it?"

Ranako was in doubt of how mystic it was. Looking down at the cards, she said, "So, none of this stuff is really… really magic? None of you are real mystics, who talk to cards and see the future?"
 The woman took a long look at Ran that she couldn’t quite decipher. "If there are any, they aren't my type."

The card below represent the basis of the situation. You heard my little explanation there. Self interest, that's what he's looking out for, no? The swords in general; out of the minor arcana they represent action of some sort, constructive or destructive. Still with me?"

"You're familiar with the arcana?"

"Yes." Ran responded. She'd read about them in books. Twenty-two major, four suits of minor, with each suit containing the same number of cards as a playing deck suit: fourteen.
"The major arcana are... fool, and death and lovers. Lovers. Umm." She struggled for a minute, trying to recall more than three. Images of cards from books flooded her head, an she grasped for their names. "Justice. No- judgement?"

The woman rested her head on one hand. "Both."

That was five, then. "There was a chariot. One with a lion... strength." Seven. "The world, or the universe. And, um- tower." She looked up at the roof of the alley corner, like it would give her answers. The woman lifted her head off her hand. She looked mildly impressed. 

"That's good. A lot better than me when I started out. You'll learn the rest along the way. Let's continue."

Ranako couldn't imagine learning them all quickly enough to work, which is where the interpretation would probably come in handy. She didn't know, for one, what any of the cards or suits meant, other than the fact that the Death one spooked people but wasn't really all that bad.

"Then, you can do the next one. Go ahead, flip over the one to the left of the little cross. It's supposed to relate to the past."

Ranako did as she said, revealing a card with a yellow village in the background, and five six of what looked like chalices holding flowers adorning the scene with one figure handing the sixth to a small woman. "Um, it's bright. Someone's giving something a vase. It could be about… sharing? Or charity? Like… being handed something, like a child. A child. But that's probably not it so-"

"No, no you're right." She said, a deeply entertained grin inches shy of devious painted on her face, "Projection; it's all about projection. That's the beauty of pictures. Once someone's got it in their head that this image's about them and their situation and what they're feeling, it will be. The rest is smoke and mirrors-" When Ran knitted her eyebrows, she added, "-for me." She moved the card away from the others and placed it closer for Ran to inspect.

"Stop glaring. The six of cups, as you probably realised; it represents sharing, or innocence, or childhood, which makes it a particularly easy card to get for the past. Everyone can relate to the concept of childhood. Even orphans or street rats will talk about their lost childhood. And the suit of cups is about emotions, so people can go on about how they feel then. From there, you can lead into the next card: the present."

The shadows cast on the table suddenly alerted Ran to a very important something. It was getting late. Too late. She craned around to catch a look at the sun, and found it nearly hidden behind the buildings.
"I've got to go. Got to go." She moved to collect her things, then remembered she had nothing to collect, and stepped up from the table to leave. There was something else she needed to practice, and she would prefer it not get too dark.
"You'll have to pay again for next time!" The woman shouted after her retreating figure.

The cold weather of her swamp bit at her. She'd gotten in much later than she had expected, and by now the crickets were chirping at her ear and the sun was nearly set; but she wouldn't let it mar her will to practice this technique. The bag in her hand crinkled softly as she set it against the dilapidated, wooden floor of her shack, and she gathered up a blank scroll from where it was sitting in an open chest. With her equipment ready, she made her way out of the small hovel and to her porch.

Description: Picture 1-A; Picture 1-B, Picture 1-A; Picture 1-B A technique where the user uses a seal on a Scroll to summon an object they have. The object who is being summoned must have the same seal as well in order to be summoned. User is unable to summon where other seals are located. The Person is the medium and you need that person in order to bring someone in. Once the object has been summoned the seal disappears. In order to summon an object “E” Rank or “D“ Rank, user must learn “E” Rank Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Bbujiekuto) (Summoning Technique (Object)). In order to summon an object “C” Rank and “B“ Rank, user must learn “C” Rank Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Bbujiekuto) (Summoning Technique (Object)). In order to summon an object “A” Rank and “S“ Rank, user must learn “A” Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Bbujiekuto) (Summoning Technique (Object)).

The summoning technique was one of those simple, fundamental ninja skills, and one that she figured would be useful to have in her repertoire if she were ever going to take the job seriously. She carefully opened the blank scroll in front of her. Summoning was something she'd seen done more than a few times in the Academy, step by step, and the steps were hard to forget.

Gingerly, she drove her teeth into her thumb until the flesh broke. The first part of summoning, as she remembered, was inscribing a seal- not a complex one, and as her thumb hovered over the scroll, dripping stark red blood onto the white parchment, the frog girl had no trouble visualising it. She spread her finger over the paper, the odd feeling of paper against cut skin sending a shiver up her spine, and when a shape similar to the one that she had printed on the magazine moments before, she lifted her hand and eyed it critically.

Good enough. Now all she had to do was the summoning itself. The technique used chakra, meaning it was a matter of finding out how much it would need before she would have a working scroll. Ran pressed her hand to the seal and sent a small trickle of chakra through, trying to find out just how much would be the right amount for the book she'd bought to come to her. One second past, then another- then finally, after five seconds of leaking chakra into the paper she saw the seal flash for a small, blink-and-you-miss-it moment. Was it working? A puff of smoke later and she had her answer. A glossy, new magazine was staring up at her.

Huh, it wasn't in its bag. She supposed she hadn't put a seal on the bag itself, though. Either way, the technique had worked, and she was proud. She let the book fall to the ground as she rolled up the scroll for use another day, but as she did, she caught sight of something… something… weird.

Ranako arched an eyebrow and looked down. Bright blue flashed out against a field of peach. Lots of peach. The frog girl tilted her head to the side and surveyed the woman on the page- sitting very close to the camera in fishnet tights, blue sandals and not much else. It took Ranako a minute to register that the things on her chest were supposed to be boobs. Huge boobs. At least three times the size of anyone's she'd seen in real life, unless the women of Lightning happened to be very good at hiding.

Baffled, she took up the book and folded it closed. "Hot… busty ninja action… X. X. X?" She said, carefully pronouncing each word. What did XXX mean? When she flipped to another page she found similar pictures: each as extravagant as the next.
"..."

After a moment of trying, without success, to glean any educational value from the book, she rolled it up and put it in the back of some chest. At the very least, it would make a good weapon if she ever needed to squash a Boot Mauler.

One day and 1,000 Ryo later, Ran found herself sat in front of the smiling woman again. It was much earlier morning, and the frog girl was more than glad for the cloak around her shoulders. The 'mystic' sat comfortable in front of her, wrapped in a scarf and with cards already laid out in front of her.

"Where were we, the present?"

Ranako took the initiative this time, nodding before reaching out and turning the card. On it lay an image of an angel underneath a sun, with a naked woman to his right and a naked man to his left, backed by a mountain. "Oh, a major arcana. Finally." The woman picked up the card and turned it to Ranako. "The lovers. What do you think it relates to?"

Ranako crinkled her nose in disgust. "I'm not in love."

"Well that's what everyone thinks it means. In most circles, though, the card is thought to represent choices; especially a choice between opposites. Convenient, eh? Now how would you apply it to this position-" she gestured to the point where the card had been, "-the present?"

Ranako thought for a moment. She would be putting herself into the shoes of a mystic. Even knowing that the woman was all about tricks, the thought excited her. "I would… relate it to the cards before and say I had a choice between…" Ran glanced at the swords cards. "…solitude and society?"

The woman nodded. "Sharp of you to compare it to your cards from before. Most don't try until they've had more practice. But it's a good reading. Now, let me give you another example. Say a woman came to your stall and said she had… I don't know, trouble conceiving. Now, she got this card in this position. What do you tell her?"

Ranako thought for a moment. It was a tough one- she didn't see how choice had to do with conception. "Then I'd say the card represents the choice between motherhood and… not motherhood. Not motherhood? Yeah." She said, after thinking a few more moments.

"Yeah, you could even spin it and say that the Lovers literally stand for her and her lover. Make it even more legitimate. Now, we move onto the more exciting bits- the future. Well, near future." She turned the card between the mini-cross and straight line over.

The scene portrayed on the card was nothing less than catastrophic; a dark tower atop a hill in the middle of a ravaging storm. Its windows were aflame as a bolt of lightning struck an eerily yellow crown of its roof, and all the while people fell from the windows to their deaths.

Ranako looked to the woman for reassurance, but even she seemed taken aback. There was a tense moment, until the fortune teller let out a laugh. "Y'know, if we were doing a 'real' reading, I would tell you that this was a bad omen. The tower, a sudden change, and usually not a good one." Ranako felt a bit sick, thinking about it. "The chaos, the falling; the tower near universally refers to a sudden catastrophic event. And it's rare for a card to universally refer to anything."

She took one look at Ran, and her face softened. "But this isn't a real reading. And even if it was, this card doesn't always refer to bad change. Usually, but not always." She stared for a minute, then seemed to realise from the pained expression on the gray-haired girl's face that she wasn't helping. "What I mean is, don't take it too seriously. We still have card number 7- the things you can do to change or keep the situation as is- otherwise known as the advice card. Isn't that hopeful?"

Ranako felt the dread in the pit of her stomach settle. Sudden change? Upheaval? She knew the woman was more of a con-artist than anything else, but the thought of it made her sick. She wanted to believe in the cards, and having something so ominous in her first reading could not be a good sign, no matter how fake a mystic the woman said she was.

"A face card." She said as she flipped over the next card. It was a crowned man wearing a long, elegant robe, sat on a throne and with a staff in his hand. "King of wands. Protip here: if you get a face card, compare it with any other face cards the person's gotten before. It shakes things up a bit. Now, with face cards the customer's supposed to compare themselves to the cards. Like with Kingie here- in this spot, the card would be 'telling you' to think like it does.

"This card represents creativity, starting new projects. So I would tell you to start something new. Alternatively, compare the king to someone creative. There is a method to it, but I usually just find it easier to have the person look at the card and tell me what kind of person comes to mind. Then, they link it to someone else. Or they link it to themselves. Either way, voila! You have everything so far?"

Ran nodded. The shock of the tower was starting to ebb away. Creativity, inspiration; easy enough. Even if this lady was a con artist, she would keep it in mind. Just in case.

Footsteps came up behind Ran, and she turned around to see a nervous looking teenage girl standing behind them, awkwardly fiddling with her sleeves. Ranako looked back to the woman- whose name she still didn't know- and made eye contact.

"It looks like I have a customer, dear. Head on home, now."

Ranako nodded, still feeling a small dread in the pit of her stomach. She'd learned a lot, she couldn't say otherwise, and she felt a sort of… fondness for the older woman. She gave her a rare, genuine smile as she got up and let the girl take her seat.

"And good luck with righting that tower!" She called. Ranako thought her luck had been pretty good so far.
