The first light of day peeped in through the crack in the curtains and caught Ban right on the eye. With a grumble, Ban pulled the curtain shut and turned over. Another few minutes and then he would get up. But mother nature had other plans. From the corner of the room came a buzzing sound. For a moment, Ban was awake and listening to the sound, trying to determine which way it was going. The sound remained seemingly at a distance before suddenly exploding in his ear. With a loud smack, Ban hit his own ear and the buzzing stopped. Much better. The buzzing exploded once more in his ear as the mosquito made its way back out. Ban jumped up out of bed and slapped his hands together. Missed. The buzzing continued.
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Ban groaned and pulled the curtains open fully, letting the sunshine in. It was still early in the morning and the world aside looked cold. The buzzing removed itself from earshot and Ban turned to get ready. A quick shave and shower later, Ban was pulling up his pants and putting his vest on over his shirt. The sword belt clipped around his waist and Ban put the sword on it as he had been taught so many years ago. Easy to remove both sword and sheet for whichever defensive purpose was needed.
With practiced hands and fingers, Ban molded his chakra into a jutsu as he formed the needed handseals. A moment later, the jutsu was completed and Ban put his hand on the sword at his belt which promptly disappeared from sight. He'd need to refresh it every so often but it was good practice anyway. His sword was in place and ready, his senbon were tucked away all over his body ready to be thrown and his backpack stood where he had left it. Ban picked it up and swung it over his shoulder, putting his other arm through as well. The backpack had his mother's notes on all things medicine as it related to the forest as well as Ban's own notes and a map of Taki no Kuni in it. Picking up some packaged breakfast, Ban closed the door behind him.
Another set of handseals later and Ban's door was sealed tighter and more securely than any lock. The bracelet on his left hand had yet another image on it, this time a fork that mirrored the image of a fork on the door to Ban's room. With everything in order now, Ban set out towards the gate of Takigakure and the surrounding forests. Three conceal jutsus later, Ban had reached the outside world and was walking along the road.
Ban stopped and set himself down on a rock along the road. He put down the backpack and pulled his mother's notes out. There were various plants described in there but there were a few that had Ban's interest at the moment. He quickly leafed through it and stopped at the correct chapter. "Mosquito repellent plants. That'll teach those little ..." Ban shook his fist at the book but then started reading. "Mom really kept notes on everything, huh."
Ban started reading the notes. The first one talked about a weed called pineapple weed, named as such because of its cone like flower heads. The cones were usable for salads, reading this Ban looked as non believing as the voice in his head sounded, and for herbal teas. Apart from other uses, the mosquito repellent worked by crushing the plant and letting the aroma of pineapple keep the mosquitoes at bay. The resulting goop could be applied to clothing or skin to keep mosquitoes from coming closer.
Ban looked at the sketch of the flower head next to the text. It didn't really look like a pineapple but he wasn't going to change the name because of that. Ban continued to read. The pineapple weed grew in disturbed areas, where the soil had been compacted by pressure. It was most easily found along roads and paths often thread. Ban just happened to be sitting on a rock not five minutes from the main road out of Takigakure.
Turning the page, Ban started reading up on the next one. The vanilla leaf, also known as deer's foot, was a mosquito repellent that was found in shadier forests. It featured a long top flower, usually white, with three large green leaves growing underneath it, like a tray almost. It's these tray like leaves that are used to keep mosquitoes away after they are dried. Simply leaving them to dry near an entrance is enough to keep the mosquitoes out. Also, rubbing the leaves, dried or fresh, on skin gave the same effect as hanging them to dry.
The vanilla leaf is easily found in shadier or moister areas so looking for it was ultimately best done in an area that had both shade and water, like a stream running down a canyon or valley. Ban wasn't sure where he'd find that around here but in the land of waterfalls it wouldn't be so hard to find a more moist area in the shade.
Skill Mastery: Expert: 91/125

Traits: Physician +1 per roll, Hermit +1 per roll, Able Learner amount of rolls x1.5
Rank: "E" x1
Skill: Skill
Effect: A skill that allows the user to identify plants.
Special: ---
Drawback: ---
Description: A character with this skill has a basic knowledge of plants and how they grow. They know how to tell various species of plants apart and under what conditions each type of plant grows best. Most of the time they can tell poisonous plants from non-poisonous plants. User must choose a specific Region each time they go up this Skill. A successful Botany Skill check provides knowledge of plants, while failure indicates the character does not know or cannot recall anything about that plant. Each Skill level allows the user knowledge of each Herb category (Example: Novice can identify Common Herbs, Master can identify Nearly Impossible Hearbs) within a region. Here is some Difficulty Examples.
Trivial - Plant is in bloom
Easy - Plant is whole
Average - Identify plant fruit, leaves, tubers or seeds
Difficult - Parts of plant in a mixture or food
Very Difficult - Identify plant from charred remains
Each time learned user gets 5 die roll to increase the skill.
