Everything was silent. There wasn't even the faint noise of any of the small animals and birds that normally inhabit this area. Everything on his body hurt. Shiki felt his head throbbing as he tried to make sense of whatever that had just happened. His vision was blurry and even in the poor dim lighting of the approaching twilight he was struggling to keep his eyes open. Eventually forcing them open he struggled against his pain to move his hands to his face. His arm didn't seem broken at the very least. As he brushed the mud from his face he slowly felt his instincts coming back to him.
Where was he? The mud was cold and drying adhering to every part of his clothing. As he moved he felt the soft polymer of his armor slow his movements ever so slightly. His armor. The wheels were starting to turn in his head a little bit. That's right. He was in combat. Shiki rolled quickly over to his side and gasped out loud in pain. The only thing preventing a scream from rushing from his lips was the discipline and training that he had honed from years of service as a shinobi. As he settled his eyes on the ground in front of him he saw the tracks. Small fragments of memories started to come back to him.
Shiki saw the canine foot foot print not far from his face. It was slightly smaller then the size of a direwolfs print. But there was something different about the print. Shiki ran two shaking fingers into the depth of the print and felt the hardened clay at the base of the prints depth. The mud and clay was hardened as if by a kiln. Whatever made these prints was conducting a very large amount of heat. Shiki remembered a word as it came to his mind. It was a lighting elemental for sure. Shiki's head felt like it was splitting open as a torrent of information and knowledge came rushing back to him.
Memories of snarling teeth and the flash of bright lighting as it arced from position to position in front of him. The screams of cloud ninja as the lighting oriented squad suddenly became powerless against the lighting immune enemies. Shiki felt a twinge of fear course through him. Where was his squad? Shiki gingerly pushed himself up till he was kneeling and took in the carnage around him. The ground was charred and covered in soot of fires that covered every inch of this battle field. He remembered that the only way to stop one of these lumbering monstrosities was up close and with a weapon.
Shiki moved his hand over to his hilt for his blade and felt panic shoot through his mind as he realized he didn't have his weapon. His sheath and his pouches and belts were missing from his hip Shiki vociferously started to reach around to all the parts of his body where he normally kept his assortments of weapons. First reaching down to his boot he reached down for his hunting knife. Luckily that one seemed to have escaped whatever prying hands that had removed his weapons. He got himself in a low stance and got himself ready to take on one of the elementals that might still be lurking on the battlefield.
