The next day the monk woke Nelke at the crack of dawn. Nelke was sleep-deprived and her muscles were sore from yesterdays grueling training. The master led her out to the temple and then stood between the stone circle; there were several bamboo shoots beneath his feet. He sat down in the lotus position and motioned Nelke to do the same.
Both of them closed their eyes and sat in meditation, Nelke could feel herself being grounded; she could sense the monks chakra flow. They were both connected and grounded. The monk stood up after a while grabbing a single bamboo shoot and knocked it on the ground nine times. He shouted out to her “Stand up!” Nelke stood up and he handed her the bamboo shoot.
“You have learned to perceive and to focus your root energy, that is well and good but that is not enough, for you will also need to counter your opponent once their attack has been successfully deflected. For that you shall have to harden your joints like rock. Unbreakable; and for that you will have to suffer. We will begin by hardening the bone in your hand and wrists.
