Half God, Half Devil - Part II
In between, in between
In between hell and heaven...
Sometime in the recent past:
"It's hard to believe how quickly time has passed." Lady Adelaide set her teacup on her saucer and turned to face Cree. "You've matured into a lady." Cree cast a downward look. Her tiny form was shaped by a corset, which compressed it into a more curved shape. She wore a blouse beneath and a long dark skirt, complete with button-up boots. Her dark, silky hair was tied back into a modest chignon.
Yes. She pondered as she examined her gown. A foreign culture. She was perplexed as to how her life had gotten so complicated. She had a series of doubts. However still, she survived. Had lately reawakened into a strange world, a different time. The corset was a bit much, but that was about to alter as well. It's a shame since she enjoyed the way it felt on her. It was almost like armour, and she really needed armour right now.
“It's great to hear that you've been accepted into the academy. But why Konoha? This was entirely his choice. It had to be. Shimizu, my own son, governing over your life as if it were his.”
In her chest, an icy mass formed, throbbing with harsh, heavy beats. Her breathing became more rapid, and her fingers across the table contracted. Blood raced through her veins like water through a tiny channel. "I'm not doing this for him!" she exclaims. Lady Adelaide gaze darted from her face to her hands. "Cree," she said in a warning tone.
Cree could hardly hear her above the rush of blood coursing through her veins. The icy mass's heartbeat increased. " I'm doing this for myself. And then perhaps someday I'll-"
"Cree!"
Lady Adelaide sharp voice snapped the coldness inside her. Cree sat up and gasped. She concentrated her attention on her fingertips. She had almost lost control.
"It's happening again, isn't it?" Lady Adelaide said softly.
Cree swallowed. "I'm not sure why." Her eyes suddenly pricked with tears. "In years, nothing has occurred. Since then, I haven't lost control... Then all of a sudden..." She formed a fist and pressed it on the corset's upper border, just over her heart. "It seems to be taking control."
"How long has it been going on?
Cree made a shaky motion with her head. "Nothing happened, but I felt it there again, inside of me, waiting."
Lady Adelaide pulled her lips into a grim line. "And you never told me?"
"I hoped it was nothing. But now..."
"Cree, you can't let it out."
"I know. But I don't want to live like this. I can’t live like this! Always wondering when I'm going to snap and do something awful!"
Her breath became frantic once more, and with it came the icy mass. She closed her eyes and focused on her breathing, slowing it with each inhalation. She then turned her attention to her body, visualizing her heart, lungs, and fingers and wishing for each of them to calm down.
A hard covered hers. Cree took a deep breath.
"You will discover an answer, Cree." But until then, no one must know what you're capable of. And you must keep it under control."
"I know." She trembled and drew her hand away from Lady Adelaide. After each event, she felt as if something in her had died as if a piece of her soul had been torn out. Even though she hadn't fully activated the power, she could feel another part of herself shrivel up and die. What will happen when every part of her dies? Would she even be human?
Lady Adelaide let out a long breath. "I know you don't like this, but maybe there is a chance your grandfather could help you."
Cree looked up, horrified. "No! Never! I will figure this out on my own."
"But what if it gets worse, Cree? What if someone is injured?"
"I will leave." She had decided that a couple of weeks ago and had already hidden away a small bundle of bills.
"Promise me you will see me first."
Cree glanced up.
There was a serious long on the other woman's face. "You are like a daughter to me, Cree. I would do anything to help you."
Cree’s lips began to tremble. “You will help me leave?”
Lady Adelaide nodded. "If it were best for you and for everyone else, then yes."
"And you wouldn't tell my grandfather?"
Lady Adelaide face paled. "Yes. But let's not dwell on that choice right now. Instead, let us focus on your travel to Konohagakure no Sato. That is your future."
Lady Adelaide was right. Focus on today, not on tomorrow. Today she was to head to Konoha and start her career as a Leaf kunoichi. Maybe she would find an answer to who she was, what she was.
Cree pushed her chair back and stood. "You're right." She glanced at the clock. A quarter till seven. "And I don't wish to be late."
"One thing, Cree, before you leave."
Cree looked back.
"Be careful. Guard your emotions. Do not let them rule you. The moment you let them rule you, they will destroy you, along with everyone else."
Lady Adelaide words sent a chill through her heart.
"I won't. I promise."
"You are strong, Cree. Just like your father. And you're not alone, remember that."
Cree nodded. But as she dashed out into the hall, she felt alone. Very alone.
