THE ATTITUDE:
Authoritative figures do not intimidate Mako. He rarely listens to others and prefers to go around doing things his own way. He is currently wandering the world aimlessly without a master, feeling no pressure to find himself a purpose in life. When faced with authority in the past Mako had sometimes followed orders flawlessly, but other times he completely disregarded what he was told. Mako often struggles to fit in with society while at the same time trying to pursue the greater good through his actions.
Words do not mean much to Mako. He is a strong believer of proving your worth through your actions rather than fancy talk. He often dislikes people who talk their way around most problems instead of dealing with them head-on. Mako is not stupid however, and understands that sometimes a subtle solution is the best solution. As a result he does not shy away from using his natural charm sometimes, although this is indeed a rare occasion.
Mako also doesn't pay much attention to what other people think about him. He knows well that a lot of his actions are seen as anti-social or socially bizarre. He holds the belief that worrying about others will only lead to hesitation and second-guessing oneself. Due to this Mako has developed several weird habits over the years that aren't seen in the general population. This mindset has allowed Mako to develop into himself fully and without any social restrictions.
Mako can be quick to lose his temper. While he does not easily fall for taunts and insults, there have been times where somebody crossed a line resulting in a fight. Mako attempts to keep his cool throughout most situations but even the coolest guys lose their temper sometimes. People who have known Mako in the past sometimes learned how to push his buttons in order to make him angry. When angered, Mako is quick to start a fight. Most of the time he does not have problems controlling the amount of strength he uses in battles.
Often failing to show feelings expected of him, Mako also lacks empathy. Years of service as a samurai have desensitized Mako from most situations in life. While his training often prevents him from feeling negative emotions such as fear or jealously, it has also resulted in Mako not being able to identify with many positive emotions. Feelings of love and gratitude often escape Mako, making for many awkward situations. Surprisingly, Mako has retained his own special sort of humour that not many people can appreciate.
THE LOOKS:
While Mako takes good care of himself he often looks scruffy and unkempt. This is especially apparent with his hair. Mako sports short black hair that rarely receives any attention. He often leaves his hair untouched from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to sleep. Overall Mako is an above-average looking guy who keeps himself physically fit and able. He does not stand out in a crowd but has caught the eyes of many women in the past.
As mentioned before Mako keeps himself in shape and ready for physical activity. This physical activity happens to be fighting most of the time, but there is also manual labour and other work. Instead of trying to build up large muscles, Mako has chosen to get himself toned and his muscles are well-defined. He possesses the much sought-after 'six pack'. Mako's general build seems to be more on the skinny side. This has not prevented him from achieving a somewhat intimidating look through his physical training.
Mako has several unique features in his appearance that define him from others in a group of people. The first, and most notable thing is the black stripe on his face. The number '69' is tattooed on the left side of his face just below the stripe. The number indicates the number of opponents Mako killed before leaving his master. A second notable feature is the scar on the right side of Mako's face. The scar is composed of three vertical stripes leading down from his right eye to the cheek. Mako gained this scar when he was overwhelmed by several opponents in the past.
Unsurprisingly Mako keeps his outfits simple. The first and most used outfit is one that Mako will wear whenever he is travelling or working. It consists of a black kosode and a black hakama. Underneath his kosode Mako wears a white shirt. His choice of footwear is a pair of waraji. Mako's other outfits are even more casual and often consist of t-shirts, jeans and hoodies. He is a fan of cargo-pants as well as straight-fit chinos. He often throws on whatever is nearest or whatever seems to fit the current weather the best.
Mako seemingly has a lack of formal wear. However, as a former Samurai he has several ceremonial outfits that he has kept. The first is almost identical to his favourite outfit, except the colours are swapped (black under-shirt with white kosode and hakama). This is only to be used on very special occasions. Mako is a man of the modern age and as a result possesses a very fancy tuxedo. The tuxedo is black in colour, and is tailored to fit Mako perfectly. The colour of the shirt worn by Mako depends greatly on his choice that day.
THE STORY:
Mako's father, Kohaku, was a descendant of the once elegant Kaguya clan. His ancestors fled the Land of Water 3 days before the massacre occurred. After hearing about plans to attack Kirigakure, they refused to participate and ran away in the night. Kohaku had grown up travelling the lands, until he met Mako's mother. Back then Satomi caught Kohaku's eye like no other girl. She had beautiful flowing red hair. Kohaku managed to muster up the courage to go speak to her and the rest was history. After learning that Satomi was pregnant, the soon-to-be parents settled in the Land of Sound, in a small village.
Mako's birth was surprisingly easy given the lack of proper facilities. Satomi gave birth at home, since no hospitals existed in the small village. By then, Kohaku and Satomi had been accepted into the village and were part of a small community. The villagers had gathered outside the house to await the reveal of a new member of their village. Mako was born a chubby, healthy baby. While it wasn't yet physically obvious if Mako carried his father's bloodline, it was almost certain due to genetics and the fact that the bloodlimit allele was dominant. Mako was welcomed into the community and was one of several children born that month.
Growing up in the village wasn't too tough. There were several food shortages throughout the years, but the villagers would all come together and suffer through them without many disputes. Mako soon reached the age of 8. His father was set on passing down the things he was taught about the Kaguya clan and the several techniques that came with the teachings. Since Mako was at an age where he could learn to mold chakra, that was the first item on the list. Mako picked up on this pretty quickly and learned the handseals without much hesitation. Next, Kohaku explained the history and downfall of the Kaguya plan. This saddened young Mako although he also understood that the majority of the Kaguya plan weren't to blame and it was the corrupt leadership that ultimately ruined them. Throughout the next couple of months, Kohaku began to teach Mako the techniques for extracting and converting calcium in his body. While it pained Kohaku to put Mako through the painful process, he knew that his son would die if he didn't have knowledge of the techniques. Mako seemed to be a natural at learning the clan techniques and soon had them all learned.
Life isn't supposed to easy as Mako's was. That was about to change. The Sound Country has always been known for pirates and bandits. These don't usually cause a problem, but sometimes some of the smart ones get together and make a group. These groups have been a thorn for a long time, and sadly it is villages like Mako's that suffer. Without any warning, the bandits mounted an attack during the night. They didn't have a purpose other than to murder and kidnap. Those they kidnapped would be served into slavery. Unfortunately for Mako, he and his family were kidnapped. His father was out on a fishing trip and his mother didn't know how to fight. Mako tried to put up a fight but there was only so much a 12 year old can do against a group of fully grown men. In the end Mako was over-powered and sold into slavery to a nobleman named Hideki Fukui.
However, Hideki was not in need of slaves. He was in need of bodyguards. Luck seemed to be on Mako's side, if you can call that lucky. Mako was placed into a training program and would eventually become a Samurai serving the name of Hideki Fukui. Young Mako was not happy. He wanted to see his mother and father yet again. Days without his parents first sent him into depression. Later anger kicked in. His superiors were surprised at how well Mako was picking up the fighting techniques, it even scared them sometimes. Mako was taught the code and honour of the Samurai way. He wasn't buying any of it. He hated the people he worked for, they took him from his family. This didn't change the fact that Mako was one of the more skilled trainees, and was soon put in a position guarding Hideki Fukui himself.
Mako had been dreaming of an escape for a long time. Over his years in the living quarters of Hideki, he mapped out the rooms and exits perfectly. He decided that on his 18th Birthday he would escape or die trying. He understood that a distraction was needed, and there was none better than Hideki Fukui. By this point Mr. Fukui was a full-time gambler moonlighting as a child trafficker. He was a debt to society and needed to be wiped out, the way Mako saw it. The day of his 18th Birthday came and no-one suspected what happened next. As a bodyguard, it was easy for Mako to enter the chambers of Hideki. With his guard down, Mako assassinated Mr. Fukui and fled through a hidden exit that was built in case of emergencies. After a series of tunnels, Mako was happy to see that guards had been moved from their usual post at the gate due to the commotion caused by the death of Hideki. Mako slipped out of the gate and was never seen by the Samurai again. He was now a Samurai without a master, a Ronin.
