The problem with Genjutsu was that it was really impossible to train alone.
Well, not all of it. Shizuka skirted the edges of the crowd, secretly delighting in her new Invisibility jutsu. Between her much-practiced stealth and the chakra shielding her from sight... Well, a skilled ninja could probably still tell she was there, but these civillians had no clue.
Some techniques she could usually manage by herself, as she had proved the other day. Others needed a target, however, and that was a problem for someone who usually trained by herself.
Although that can also be solved... With some creativity.
This was something she'd never do in front of her sister. Never mind that there was no way she would ever practice untested jutsu on her little sister; Natsuko still believed that the world was made up of good people that you shouldn't be mean to (unless they were trying to kill you, and then it was okay). Maybe not the best attitude for a ninja-in-training, but she was still young, and she didn't need to be disillusioned yet.
I'm pragmatic enough for the both of us.
Shizuka used a windowsill to flip herself up to the gently sloped roof of a low, single-story building. Looking onto a narrow street full of stalls, ridge on the front tall enough to block most direct sightlines, in shadow from the much taller building next door... Perfect.
Shizuka dropped the invisibility jutsu, revealing a small, grey-and-black clad form. Her long-sleeved grey shirt was pulled down over her bright yellow sash, hiding the colour, and the wakizashi at her side was safely hidden in a dull black sheath. Her black tactical vest hid the rest of her gear; sixteen kunai, fifteen darts, fifteen shuriken, and fifteen zip-ties in her various front pouches, and a roll of ninja tape, a flashlight, and a lock-picking kit on her back. The black goggles which normally rested in her front left pouch were stretched across her forehead, minimizing the amount of pale skin shown without being obviously part of a "sneak-suit".
Now, it was true that practicing destructive jutsu on civillians was just a bad idea. Accidentally killing one of them was a ticket to missing-nin status, and maiming one of them, physically or mentally... Shizuka didn't need that trouble. Essentially harmless jutsu, on the other hand...
Well, she had to get training dummies from somewhere.
This technique, one of the ones she'd looked up the other day, was one of the simplest of the mind-affecting perception, and also the most harmless. It was supposed to create a whispering voice in the mind of another person. The scroll hadn't mentioned a distance, but it probably didn't reach more than a few metres, maybe ten at the outside.
Which made the man running the stall just below her the perfect candidate.
Shizuka rehearsed the six hand seals needed for the jutsu as she studied the man below her. Definitely not shinobi-trained; he was keeping an eye on his table of fruit to try and catch thieves, but he didn't have that alertness that came with knowing you might kill or be killed at any moment. He didn't move like a shinobi either; he was out of shape, running to fat, and while an Akimichi might have that much or more fat on them, they still moved with a balanced step. He looked like he might trip over his own feet at any moment.
Not a shinobi, not someone who could end up watching her back, and therefore not someone she needed have any concern for. Good.
Deciding she had the handseals smooth enough, Shizuka gathered her chakra. Running through the seals again, she held the Ram, and pushed.
She felt the chakra leave her, travel towards the man... And miss him completely, dissipating harmlessly when it hit the ground.
What - oh. With a more distant target, she couldn't just push her chakra out. She needed to actually aim it.
And she was not embarassed at her silly mistake, and she definitely wasn't blushing.
Ignoring the slight warmth in her cheeks, Shizuka gathered her chakra again. Run through the handseals, use the held Ram to indicate the direction, and... There! The civilian shivered slightly and looked around. He didn't see her, of course; apart from shinobi, who usually knew better, humans almost never looked up.
Alright, she had the getting-the-chakra-to-the-target portion of the jutsu sorted. Now... The scroll had said that the person who cast the jutsu could pick what the whispering voice would say. Without her actually deciding on anything... The previous attempt might have sounded like breathing, or like someone whispering to far away to hear. Or like something completely unknown. It's a pity I can't ask.
Shizuka thought for a moment, then focused. 'I bet you I could grab some peaches off that guy's table and he'd have no idea.' 'I bet you I could grab some peaches off that guy's table and he'd have no idea.' 'I bet you I could...' She called up her chakra, ran through the hand seals, then used the Ram to guide her aim and pushed.
The man jerked his head up sharply and looked around with narrowed eyes. He leaned forwards, and one hand stretched out, hovering protectively over his produce.
Success! Although I can't actually tell what he heard... One more try won't hurt.
Shizuka started concentrating. 'Hey, I could totally pull it off. Watch this!' She gathered her chakra, ran through the jutsu again, aimed, and cast.
A second later, the civillian's face twisted into a scowl. "Just try it," he growled. A couple passers-by looked at him, startled.
Shizuka sat back, pleased. That had been a definite success. Probably time to stop now, though, or at least move. I don't want to risk too much attention.
