"Stand back, Souen-san," he called out to the boy, his fingers already moving through the needed handseals at a steady pace. The tension in his face could be seen as he focused his chakras into his feet, where the jutsu would activate and then spread out. As he held the ram seal, ripples of chakra pumped from his body and went channeling into the ground before him. Within an instant, a rooted set of spikes began to jut out of the earth in oblique lacerations. It had been rather fortunate that Ikku told Souen to move, for the Spikes of Raising Wood would make a path out some four meters straight ahead of Ikku.
"..What tha fu——how did you do that?" Souen said, startled. Ikku could only gloat a while at his first time of such a basic Wood Style technique:
"Mokuton: Kasui No Mokuzai Reizu No Jutsu."
Souen rolled his shoulder, "Pretty sweet - I like, I like."
Again, the Kumagae youth went for the kata. He did them slowly, for he was in no real rush. He wanted to practice them over and over before actually using the technique, as perfection was everything to him. Ox, Snake, Ox, Tiger, Snake, Ram. He did them several times over. On his seventh try, he allowed chakra to pour from his chest into his legs and feet. The blue aura radiated through the earth from the nine- and twelve-o-clock of his being. It would seem as mere seconds past as countless ticks from the earth came sprouting out as if to impale something. The gnarled roots looked ferocious in their genesis; the way some furled around others to create bigger spires seemed to innately thrill Ikku. This would prove to be a fatal attack indeed. He made note of how the spikes got smaller the further away from his source they went. Interesting..
These were but his first two attempts. He would allow Souen to continue some Katon to clear out the proto-spires in preperation for some better tries. It seemed like he had gotten better at his Passionate Heat jutsu. D-ranked techniques seemed to be on today's menu for the two.
Now the third time had been the charm. He felt confident in himself and repeated the needed hand seals quickly in an intricate fashion. Chakra surged from his soles into the ground around him as a five meter wide radius around him trembled momentarily. Wooden spires erupted from the soft soil at his feet in droves; he was surprised that he was able to use this technique as an omni-directional attack. This offense could prove to be a defense as well - especially in Taijutsu situations. He tried again three tries and sent waves of Spikes of Wood Raising from the earth via his chakra. Each time, he allowed Souen to burn them down so he could replace them with even better ones. He liked to perfect each of his crafts.[/justify][/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote][/font]

Souen and Ikku had met in the latter's backyard after a day at the Oto Academy. The boys, both fifteen, had been in the process of preparing for the mid-terms at school and ninjutsu was today's requisite. Souen had been already practicing on his Katon art; it would seem that Ikku let his guest go first for hospitable reasons - however, that wasn't the case. He would actually prefer for his Mokuton techniques to remain laden around his property, not singed to a crisp by his comrade's flames. "Stand back, Souen-san," he called out to the boy, his fingers already moving through the needed handseals at a steady pace.
