Featherook Training Facility

This training room is located on the Featherook family property. The outside resembles a bunker that is partially underground. Its construction was funded by Tarah Featherook, an adopted child of the Featherook family, third youngest in her family. When the room is not in use, it is a featureless metal room lit by violet strips of light.

The opening of the training room is designed as a service shop. Payment is accepted for temporary use of the room when the Featherook family have no need for it. Special companions of the Featherook family are able to enter the facility without a fee.

This special training facility requires one person at the control console to operate. Dummies and archery targets are able to rise from the ground or extend from the wall. Racks of harmless weapons and padded armor are available in supply closets located by the lights of every wall.

The terrain of the training room is able to shift, to imitate alternative landscape conditions.

Our weakest point is the mind. It's probably the weakest point for all who dare to think. Genjutsu is easy to target. So long as you know the mind you wish to infect, it is likely to succeed. You must forge a defense against such techniques. Everything fails when your mind falls against the enemy. As a user of illusions and deceit, you must first be untouchable against your fellow tricksters. Minds have strength just as every muscle. You just have to improve it.

The Mind needs to become a fortress. It needs walls tougher than the hardest steel. When an attack falls against it, it must remain unmoved and unscarred. The slightest bit of weakness will shatter your mind. The most powerful form of defense in the mind is will. Your mentality must be stubborn against Genjutsu. If anything dares to touch your mind, you have to stand your ground without so much as a hair out of line. Every cell of your brain is to be protected.

Fortify the sense of sight with an infallible watchtower. Do not let illusions blind your eyes, nor cause hallucinations. Your vision must remain on reality, forever bound away from the land of dreams. To be consumed by fantasy is to lose the path of the land, which causes you to fall to things unseen. Whatever obstructions try to cloud your eyes, your mental watchtower must counter by rising high above it. Higher than the clouds of your dreams.

Let every vibration be heard to protect your hearing. The dark silence is a force to fear. When nothing is heard, your back is exposed. You must always be aware of the sounds. The vast world that is seen with the ear should never fade from your mind. The vibrations in the air, which allow you do much information, must pass though the gateway of your mental fortification, so long as it is safe for you. Only block out noise that seeks to mesmerize.

The walls must be alive, and feel all your pains and pleasures. You should be stubborn and resist all attacks, but you must never abandon pain. Pain is what tells your when anything is wrong. The world of illusions is unstable, and even reality can be affected by their touch. You must feel what your walls feel, but choose to repel it. You can't just stop thinking about what attacks are thrown your way. Do not detach yourself from the world around you.

Not even your smell should fail. Odors must be open and received. It may not be used as much as sight, sound, or feeling, but it is important nonetheless. The world's regions each carry a unique scent. You aren't a dog, so you can't exactly smell the subtleties of minor things, but each person is their own. Get in close, and you may well recognize the odor of things instead of their looks and sounds. If all else fails, it's another realm of interaction for you.

Speed if vital, and it is one of your great strengths. To have hold of speed is to have control over the battlefield. When you're fast, you may advance an attack of formulate a defense before any other. In a duel to the death, with powerful techniques thrown about, the first to strike true is the first to win. That first strike requires speed. Without that, you are as likely to win as a slug. Skill can only do so much, not enough against overwhelming power.

It isn't about doing more, it's about getting there first. A battle is a race to inflict damage. You must get there first, hit first, and defend first. That's the path to victory. No matter what stage you find yourself to be, a battle won't go your way if you don't have the capability to place your force. Against an opponent of superior speed, you'll often find yourself defending instead of attack. There is no victory to be found there.

Offense and defense are all fueled beneath speed. Every move you make is precious time, so you must try not to waste your actions. Attack directly, and flow around every attack like a feather through stormy winds. Do not put all your momentum into an attack that you aren't sure you'll be able to make. Keep to your feet, and dash away from any and all threats that you may sense. As strong as metal, but quicker than a shooting star.

You know shunshin, so you know the value of it. The value of an instantaneous movement highlights the raw power of speed. When you can close the distance, you will have no problem unleashing the raw power of your own taijutsu. Our physical strength is what unleashes the most damage against our enemies. Its biggest drawback of distance is solved by speed. The distance of our attacks are not a problem if you know you are fast enough.

You are fast, faster than you can imagine. If you wish it, you may perform so many actions in the space of a second. Would you believe it if I said we are able to throw twelve punches in the space of a second? That's not even with the power of Alida's chakra gates or rage. You are younger than most of us, but your power is still just as significant. Once your reclaim our speed, nothing can escape your full power.

Be the target that is never hit, or the arrow that would never miss. Move like sound, which pulses through the air with terrifying speed. Quickness enhances your physical strength, too. Five hundred pounds of muscle is no use when it does not move, but fifty pounds moving like a cheetah running after its meal strikes beyond that. You are no brute, the bulk of your power is born of swiftness. You don't have to stand your ground, just twist about with blistering speed.

Yes, strength is important as well. You are incredibly fast, but you have to have at least a bit of strength lined up within your sleeves. The easiest way to obtain it is to let go of your misconceptions about limit. You are not as limited as you would think. There is much you can obtain with the right mindset, even strength in your muscles. We often hold back, because certain feeling and factors bring fright to our inner selves. But that must be exceeded.

Pain holds you back, you have to suppress it. When you're afraid of the pain from punching, you don't punch quite as hard. When you're unsure about the hardness of an object, you would rather test than risk. It's all logical and understandable, but unneeded in most combat situations. When you have to punch, you have to punch. That's the truth of the business. In order to protect the power within your body, you have to dedicate yourself.

The body can be fragile or firm, depending on how prepared you are. Muscles and bones are weaker than they seem, but stronger than you believe. Pain sets in much earlier than the time it takes for your body to be at risk. When you flex, your muscles can become as durable as stone. More so, in some situations, since muscles are not brittle, and can absorb the worst of many impacts. Hold your head high, your body is your fortress, to attack as you please.

Do not fear, just observe and analyze before you charge. There is no need to second guess. Hesitation is another path to weakness. After you know what there is, you just need to hit it with everything you have. Don't pull your punches, because there is no guarantee that your opponent will show you the same courtesy. Some master their confidence and determination before you can even dream to. But strength comes from all ages of life.

Confidence in battle raises your morale, and allows for greater strikes. Be proud of every feature. In our pride, some will make mistakes in fights, but others will flourish. The key to all of it is to build up the networks of your mind. Do not be rash when you act, but be proud of the power you hold in your hands. Know that, when you let go of doubt, the raw power within your body is at its peak. You are at your best when only positivity flows in your head.

Think about what it's like to be enraged. With angry filling every bit of your mind, you become unbelievably strong. It isn't a positive emotion, yet it consumes you with power. That is due to everything else that's abandoned. Although you leave behind your logical mind, you also leave behind all fears, doubts, and regret. At that state, the gains in power exceed the loss in tactical ability. When you reach that level of directness, you rule the fight.

The rhythm of the shout and clapping the hands affects the targets brain. The brain waves will cross in their mind, meaning when the try to perform another technique they will perform the previous technique over again. This only forces them to repeat the technique one time. The skill does not carry over if the affected target leaves the thread.

Repetition is a powerful weapon in our hands. You wouldn't think so at first, but using our power to force others into action is useful even against our opponents. It's a tactical matter, where we must decide if we should experience a pervious move. It's usually much easier to avoid an attack that you've seen before, and force repetition will delay the capabilities of your opponent. That leaves them with a lot of openings to exploit.

You can force an opponent to repeat a simple move, which is a great method to stall an opponent's actions. When they desire to cover the field, and end up only using a squirt of water, that useless action becomes a vulnerability. All that's required to bring this opening out is to hone in on the instinct of your opponent. It's the same desire that leads to the insane action of constantly repeating things while expecting a different outcome.

Powerful techniques are something better to force into an encore. They take a significant amount of power, and its reuse would begin to tax the abilities of your foe. This isn't advisable against techniques of extreme levels of power, which you can not dodge. Instead, it's about picking out predictable techniques. Let them waste all their energy and stamina. We can't get them to repeat more than a couple times, but that's two sets of waste.

Easy enough, if you know what to look for. The mind is always looking to be satisfied, even by itself. Positive emotions drive people more than negative emotions do. Encores can be done without chakra, especially with entertainers. Success is their motivator, because they want such a positive experience to last. The key to the encore technique is to inspire this feeling to its peak with manipulations of your opponent's mind.

Applause is a familiar sound, and it has never fallen out of practice. The action and the noise it produces is an everlasting language of appreciation. Like a scattering of tiny thunderclaps. This sound is used to reach the mind, and find the part of the brain that receives praise. Once found, the chakra rushes there to intensify those satisfying joys. The foe is helpless to resist at that point. They must follow through with a repetition of action.

Amplification is the last step. You must take all that you know of their mind, and inspire their heart to follow through by reflex. They can't notice the full extent of your influence, or they shouldn't, in any case. You have to take the place of an entire audience. Your voice for an encore has to sound genuine, like a devoted fan. They must let you slip by their heart, to where their logic lies. Reason must be destroyed by your technique so that the enemy may play a fool's part.

One of Tarah's older brothers, Caine, strolled into the control center of the training facility. Punching bags dropped down from the ceiling and slid out the wall, breaking Tarah's concentration.

"I'm busy, Caine!" said Tarah.

"Sorry sis," said Caine, "I'm helping Kalisa train for a boxing competition. It's drawing pretty close, so it would be a big help to train here. Any chance you want to join us?"

"Ugh, fine. I need to work on hand to hand, anyway." said Tarah.

Kalisa and Vi came in through the training ground floor, merrily chatting and eating some grilled chicken out of hand-sized boxes.

Caine left the control room to join the other three girls.

Upright Stance

Description: Picture To adopt an Upright Stance, you should stand with your legs roughly shoulder-width apart. Your back foot should be about half a step behind your front foot. If your dominant boxing hand is your right hand, your left foot will lead. Lift your right heel off the ground by about 3 inches and point both feet inward (although do not exaggerate this movement). If you lift your heel too far off the ground, or turn your feet too far inward, you will become unbalanced. As a test, imagine someone pushing you from any direction. In a properly balanced stance, you should be able to maintain an upright position and not fall to the ground or sway from side to side. To increase the stability of your stance, keep your knees and hips slightly bent but make sure your back is straight. Your lead fist (which will be your left fist if your dominant boxing hand is your right hand) should be positioned vertically at eye level, approximately six inches away from your face. Your right fist should be positioned next to your chin, with your elbow held against your ribcage. This is good defensive positioning and will effectively protect your body. Whilst watching televised boxing matches, you may have noticed the boxers tapping their cheeks with their hands. This repetitive action acts as a reminder to keep fists up at all times and is especially important as the match progresses and energy levels drop. To further protect yourself from blows from your opponent, keep your chin pressed against your chest. Punches to the jaw often cause knock-outs, so it is essential to keep this stance throughout the boxing match.

Caine passed boxing gloves over to the three girls, then put a pair on himself.

Caine and Kalisa got in their boxing stances in front of some punching bags.

Tarah didn't learn any boxing yet, so she had to look over to her siblings and try to copy their stance. She eyed Caine's current stance in front of his punching bag. It seems like that primary fist was pointed forward, and the foot underneath the primary fist was leading. The left side was pulled back slightly, but not enough that the entire body turned. Tarah mimicked this positioning. Her right side leading, and her left side hanging back.

When Caine punched with his right hand, his entire body seemed to lean forward, with a slight rightwards tilt. The stance seemed unusual to Tarah, who wasn't trained in anything other than brute force brawling. She wasn't sure how the left punch was supposed to reach the target, if it was so pulled back. Still, she copied her older brother, and punched her own punching bag with her right fist. Her brawling strength showed as the punching bag flew back.

Eventually, when Caine finished with his right punches, he moved on to the left. The range of each punch was the same, because he twisted his body forward to make his left punches. The movement was more exaggerated. His left foot also twisted to augment the twist of his body. Tarah studied that movement, then used it for her left punches from the current stance. The range was indeed the same, and the same power from the looks of it.

Hitman Style

Description: Picture Place feet comfortably apart. Put your weight on the balls of your feet. You should feel "on balance" and able to move easily. Put about the same amount of weight on each foot. Bend your knees slightly. Not too much or you’ll find yourself in a crouch, which can be awkward and tiring. Position yourself slightly sideways to your imaginary opponent. With front foot, hip, and shoulders in line ( This maximizes your reach and minimizes the target area.) The Right hand should be Fist close to your chin, elbow stays close to your ribs, perpendicular to the floor. Neck and shoulders should be relaxed not "tight". The Left however should be near the body of the stomach. It should be relaxed, while the elbow is in. The whole arm should be relaxed and held by just the weight.

Kalisa had a different stance from Caine. Her footing looked a lot more relaxed. Her right arm wasn't pushed up and forward, it was bent inward to her chest instead. She was leading with her left foot, with her left forearm alighted horizontally in a guard around her stomach. This seemed like a more reserved stance. Tarah copied her sister this time, bringing her arms in and keeping her feet apart. It was oddly comfortable of a stance.

Kalisa's punched were much faster, or at least it looked faster from this stance. Her right arm shot out like a falling bridge. It snapped straight around her elbow, then contracted and returned. The motion was almost in the form of a bounce, where the punch was a rubber ball against the punching bag wall. Tarah used her own right punch from this stance, careful not to injure her elbow by putting too much force into her punch.

The left punch from Kalisa's stance was strange to see. Her fist twisted out from her stomach, and curved a bit through the air to meet the target. The motion was fluid, even though its path was crooked. She didn't have to move her legs to much, just push her body enough to augment the power of her fist. The pound echoed off the punching bag. Tarah had a bit of trouble duplicating it, but she figured her own left punches were close enough to pass.

A random thought strayed from The Drumbeat to Tarah.

Ever heard a story so sad that you just had to stop and listen? I think, with some chakra, there's a way to force those depressing feelings on others. You just need to tell the right kind of story in the form of song. That would trap in, where they can do nothing but listen. Do you want to hear a few that I know? In all our passing lives, there are plenty of sorrows to sow. Make a story depressing enough, and even the emotionless can't help being caught in its web.

You're a teenager, so you've had a lot of friends, yeah? Well, the sad things are when you find something wonderful, a relationship with a friend, and then it fades away. Have you felt that before? Try and remember all the faces, all the voices, and all experiences. Try to remember all your friends. How many have you lost, for good and bad reasons? How many still remain? You'll have us, your past lives, because we are just as much your family as Caine and Karlisa.

That shouldn't be enough though, friends are important. When we live our lives, flowing down the stream of time, sometimes we lose our fellows to the everlasting currents. Isn't it easy to forget the people in your life? When you no longer need to attend the academy, when you are no longer obligated to go to a place where you see them all the time, you can lose touch in no time at all. All you have to do is make a single mistake: put it off until the next day.

Every time you think about putting something off, you add another day of distance between you and a friend. Those can add up amazingly fast. There's only a couple dozen days in a month, and a few hundred in a year. Pretty soon, a friend will boil down to an acquaintance, and they'll eventually become a stranger. That's not something we want from our friendships, but it's something that happens when most of us don't notice. Friendships must be properly cared for.

There are so that are lucky enough to have something more. To maintain a friendship so well that they become mates and lovers. It's a wonderful thing, when that first happens. People with so much history and experience will join hands in love. They will start out closer than any other couple, and they will have an understanding of one another that is to be envied. But for many, this does not last. There are so few successes of such a thing outside the tales of fiction.

When the time comes, as it does for many, a relationship of love will fall apart. All those lovely and fantastic memories will shift from that of joy to that of sorrow. Whenever something reminds your of a former mate, you will be burdened by a deep depression. That, long ago, there was something wonderful about seeing the color orange, because your friend enjoyed their smell and taste. Because together you strolled through a peaceful orange orchard, where you will always remember your very first kiss.

The Jab

Description: Picture Stand with your feet hip distance apart. Step your right foot back 18-24 inches with the weight of your right leg on the ball of your foot (right heel is somewhat elevated and the knees are slightly bent). Bring your right fist close to your right cheek bone and your left fist slightly in front of it about jaw height. Pull your elbows in towards your ribs so that they line up somewhat below your fists. Push off of the ball of the right foot, bend the left knee slightly and start to extend the left hand in a pushing type motion (there should be a subtle rotation as your left hand goes forward your right shoulder moves back). You may also rotate the fist so that when it reaches the desired destination your left palm will be facing down. Retract the left hand as fast as you extended it and return to the original position. Remember before punching relax the hand, snap it forward and clinch before making contact. Do your best to strike with the first two knuckles and keep your wrist in neutral position upon impact. Aim six to eight inches beyond your target. Extend the arm only about 90-95 percent. Keep your chin tucked down toward your chest--this protects your jaw from exposure to being hit. Bring your hand back as fast as you throw it. Move your head on an angle as you throw the punch.

While Caine instructed Kalisa, Tarah got her instruction elsewhere. I, Alida the Torn, was her teacher of fists.

I existed before the dawn of boxing, but I have been keeping up with its advances through our lifetime. It is born of precision, but still with the background of brute force brawling. Everything from this style of fighting circles around four basic forms of hand strikes, the four fists of boxing. The first is the most well known, the Jab. It is to strike with your leading hand, to inflict a quick bout of damage to your target while making minimal motions.

The key to a proper Jab is to put the weight of your body behind the fist. At the same time, it needs to strike with speed, and take the shortest route possible from your fist to your target. There shouldn't be much wasted movements, if any at all. Have your target in mind, visualize the impact, then push forward with your lead. Lean in just so during the attack, in a way that puts your body weight behind the fist. Dedicate as much as you can, without leaving the stance.

The impact of the fist is shared between the offense and the defense. Since you're putting the strength of your body behind the blow, you'll feel a certain amount of kickback. You must not let that kickback disrupt your balance or stability. Keeping firm to your roots is what allows you to pull off attacks such as a chain punch, where multiple jabs are the key. Knowing where you punch ends is also significant information that shouldn't be ignored.

I know it's hard to understand, since right now you're a master of raw brute force. You're quite used to punches already, but boxing punches need to be considered with care. If you know where the apex of a punch is, you can direct your full force at that point. Upon contact, you release all the energy of the punch in that one spot, then withdraw your fist. Knowing the apex lets you draw out immediately after the completion of an action, which saves energy.

As you know, your raw force punch is limited in use. You'll tire out from putting all your effort into the punch. The results are quite good, you can probably punch one of those sand bags off the chain and across the room, if you wanted to. That said, you need something less stressful to fall back on when those punches run out. That was where the basic punches of boxing come in. The jab is precise, low cost, and does not have a limit of use for you.

Just like with your standard force punches, the jab is amplified by your special power states. The physical boost of your enraged state will give it a decent amount of power. The first gate of inner energy is less powerful, but you will be able to unleash a storm of punches with the speed boost provided by that gate. When combined with the Sun Fist, the jab is able to release most of our attack forms. Once you get it up to speed, even a meteor shower is possible.

The opposite is true if you are left-handed. Keep both hands up. They should hover just under the chin, with your forearms in front of your body. This will protect you from the opponent's punches. Begin the straight hand punch from the foot. Push off your back foot and pivot toward your opponent, twisting your foot, leg, torso and shoulders. Concentrate on bringing power up from your leg, hips, trunk and shoulders and channeling it into your fist as you twist your body. If you don't pivot your body, your punch will be much weaker than if you use the correct form. Aim for the other fighter's face. Punch out in a straight line and extend the arm out all the way. At the point of impact, your feet and body should be facing the other fighter. Snap your hand back to your chin as you twist your body back to the beginning position. Remember to keep your left hand up throughout the punch so you have a guard up to protect you from a counterpunch.

For a bit more power, go for the straight punch. It's sometimes known as a cross punch. This is where the drawn back hand comes into play. That is considered your rear hand, and it should be what you use for your more powerful strikes. When you do as Caine does, and turn your entire body for the punch, you put a tremendous amount of impact energy behind the fist. Upon nailing your foe, a clean hit can put you in control.

Instead of a slight lean, this punch is all about the twisting motion of throwing your rear side forward. You should feel your body following through with the punch. Try it a few times and you'll get what I'm saying. Just twist with the punch, so that your shoulders switch in angle. Your feet remain in place, but your upper body will reverse itself during the duration of the straight punch. Your entire body needs to be streamlined with this.

Don't let the exaggerated movement fool you. A straight punch will be fast, and carry a long range. Plus, it does this all without leaving you vulnerable. It's odd with the logistics, but you just have to think about where your muscles are. Feel your arm, and find all the biggest muscles. Are they on the inside of your arm, or the outside? In a straight punch, your major muscle groups are pointed inwards, towards the direction of your chest.

The power of this punch comes from focusing on stretching out those inner muscles. Do not contract your arm during this punch. It's called straight punch more because of the shape of your arm than the directness of the hit. Release instead of condense, and your straight punch will be at its best. Condensing your muscles if for defense, releasing them is the best form of offense with the style of standard boxing procedures. Got it?

Benefits of this punch is range. It is the furthest you are capable of punching without the assistance of soul or chakra. The force of the punch itself will bounce your muscles together again like a band of rubber. If you let it flow like it's supposed to, you'll naturally return to a ready position after throwing this punch. That means you get reach, power, and recovery all from this attack. It's quickness is also difficult for many to anticipate.

Think of your arm as a spear when you do this. A spear carries the most power when it is straight and steady. Same with the punch. Alight your body with it, and you'll stab towards the opponent with your knuckle. A punch lacking this rigid form is like a bent spear. It's still powerful, sometimes a lot more powerful, but you trade off with vulnerability. A bent spear is a spear that can be snapped apart at a moment's notice.
