Character Depth
Personality:
Liar: Lies differ in type, incidence, magnitude and consequence, with many gradations of severity, from harmless exaggeration and embellishment of stories, to intentional and habitual deceit. So why does lying in the name of good appeal to Yamada much more so than it should in one with a pure heart? Perhaps it was constantly being forced to lie about what he did and who he worked for when sent out to deliver commissions. Either way Yamada enjoys lying excessively to those he has not deemed pure of heart. A habit that can carry over to a darker side if not careful.
Determined: Firmness of purpose and resolve is something Yamada prides himself on. No matter where he is or what he does, he believes simply that everyone has the right to live freely. He will fight for that right actively. Even when he is being beaten into the ground he will always attempt to get back on his feet and make sure that he gets his point across. Yamada will never give up on the force of his willpower and he would die for his cause at a decent price.
Kind: To do good without a second thought and to spread cheer without searching for a reward are two things Yamada aim's for. To give the world his whole being and expect nothing in return. After his years of bitter enslavement and sleepless effort Yamada believes strongly that everyone deserves a little kindness no matter how good, evil, psychopathic, or social. As such, he has great disdain for anyone who acts in a disgusting manner or does anything horrible to anyone. He also feels great disappointment in himself if he does not manage to brighten up someone who needs it's day. So he can be found beating himself up over things like that most of the time.
Appearance:
Yamada has darkened skin, a round face and a tanned complexion offering a very rough and dark look about him. He is callused and weathered but this does not take away from his overall young figure. His eyes are a warm, expressive brown, large, round, and sunken that adds to this dark effect. Not to mention full lips and a usually present grin all framed by a coarse head of slightly curling, ash-brown hair. There are small amounts of stubble growing from his sideburns and chin.
Shigure is also very stocky and round shouldered, but taut and well-built, not having had time to gain any fat after his rescue. This, including bare-knuckle boxing training makes him very muscular above the waist and light on his feet. Although compact, he is quite speedy on his toes. This is incorporated well into his in-fighter boxing style along with his prominent chin. His determination hasn't failed him yet.
Finally, Yamada has a variety of clothes he clips, straps, and wraps onto himself every morning. To start with he has skin-tight nylon long-johns for extra warmth which he tops off with a flak jacket layered with cotton on the inside containing most of his needed items and pocketless cargo pants to make sure his legs don't freeze. Adding to this, in order to protect his neck and head Yamada always wears a bright crimson scarf that covers his mouth and fails to remove it, earning him the nickname "Enji", a deep red color. Along with all this he clothes himself in heavy wool socks, standard Ninja shoes, and a leather belt in the shape of a boxing belt with a steel plate on the front engraved with the Yukigakure symbol.
Background:
The City of Dante was always filled with filth and despair. It was a dark, miserable place to thrive, if one could even call it thriving. It was filled with grime and violence and the gates even warned those entering to think twice. It was true that those entering wouldn't stay within the walls long for loss of joy, but for the inhabitants the dangers of the city were all too real, and of course Yamada was one of them. A young boy draped in rags doing his best to smuggle food for his dying mother and father. He had only been searching for crumbs of bread and a better life when he had been kidnapped, the smuggling ring had arrived for more laborers and Yamada wouldn't be able to know if his efforts were helping his parents.
He had fought hard, of course, but to no avail, Shigure was in for four long, hard years of intense slavery at only eight years old, and this smuggling ring wasn't any easier on children than any other common bad guys. They worked Yamada to the bone. At first there was some easy metalworking which quickly evolved into complicated weaponsmithing. Not only that, but every "holiday" was consumed by boxing matches to the death between two skinny boys like himself. If there was anything Yamada could tell you it'd be that bony knuckles are more painful than any punch, and with luck he lived to be able to tell that tale.
Which finally brings us to how a boy from the Land of Rice Paddies ended up in the Land of Snow.
The child laborers including Yamada had been subjected to back-breaking drudgery for over a week on a handful of commissions from the Land of Snow's black market, but as it turned out, when the smuggling ring arrived, the Ninja of Yukigakure had already raided the Black Market and the overseers of Shigure's slavery were caught in the act. Yamada reveled in the death of his imprisoners before his very eyes, and of course was extremely joyous when the Ninja of the Village Hidden in Snow decided to take the slaves in as their own civilians. Yamada received basic training and was promoted to Genin shortly, a rage that had been simmering inside him becoming a blaze as he realized his new set of beliefs, his ninja way.
"Laws are funk and prison is junk. Everyone deserves to be free!"
