"Continuing on, you simply put your palm over your fist, left over right. We call this the meditating stance, because you use it for reflection, to understand what you are doing and what you have done." The master drolled on. I was somewhat sick of this lesson, but I knew it must get good before too long. How many stances cold there be?
I moved my arms into that position. The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was important to reflect on what I've done. Control of the body is about mind over matter, so that you can take your body and make it do what you want for it to do. It is about taking your body and putting it in intentional positions, ones where it will do exactly what you tell it to, to achieve a very, very precise thing. And, if you simply do and don't spend that extra moment to remember what you did, when you get into a fight, you won't be able to execute properly.
I also noted the fact that I had to make a fist to imitate the man. I player around with the tightness of my hand, knowing that a fist has to be strong enough to do damage where it hits. Simultaneously, it has to be loose enough for you to have a good range of motion and not hurt your hand just by holding a fist. If I can't make a proper fist, I'm hardly a martial artist really, so I take the time to find what feels comfortable and natural, before I look the man in the eye, ready to move on.
