Character Depth
Personality:
Hisoka never knew the bonds of family and never made relationships that didn’t shatter. Because of this, he sees little value in things like “friendship” and “blood ties”. He has no one in his life that matters to him more than the shoes on his feet, so he lives for the simple sake of living. Looking out for number one regardless of the situation is an automatic for him, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that his actions are always ostentatiously selfish. Often times, Hisoka will think ten steps ahead and do something seemingly selfless for someone; this is only because he sees some amount of gain in the future for his small bit of work today. What’s more, Hisoka prefers not to work hard at all, so many small investments of his time and energy are largely preferred over one big one. He likes to talk to people on occasion even though he doesn’t feel attached to most people, and is generally good at picking up people’s vibes. He’s incredibly observant of people that he converses with, but also of people he simply passes by and doesn’t stop to chat to. Outside of people, Hisoka pays close attention to as much of his surroundings as he can – the way everything looks, sounds, smells, feels, tastes… He stores his surroundings away in his mind like a photo in a scrapbook. He thinks the people of the world are on average awfully bland things, but the world itself is quite a piece of art to be admired. He also quite prefers animals to humans, and would sooner go out of his way to save a bird’s life than a stranger’s.
Above all, Hisoka hates to be bored. To find amusement in his life is a daily goal of his, for without it life and death may as well be the same thing. For entertainment’s sake, Hisoka will go to just about any lengths. He is known to find amusement in other people’s misfortune, though he is also known to take dramatized offense for others and jump to their defense in order to cause a stir and initiate more exciting happenings. Despite sometimes being an instigator just for the fun of it, Hisoka doesn’t like to fight because he is in fact not good at direct combat by any means. For this reason, he chooses not to put himself in the middle of trouble unless he’s absolutely sure that he can slip out of it unnoticed. More often than not, Hisoka likes to lazily walk the town streets, looking for something entertaining to do or to watch without too much effort on his part.
Hisoka also hates death. If every person is an actor or actress in the performance of his life, he hates to lose any one of them, no matter how small. All of them add can add something to the show to keep his life worth living. Alternatively, Hisoka likes to chew on things. If he doesn’t have something edible to chew on, he’ll chew on foliage or plastic, or even his own fingernails if he’s antsy enough. He just finds something about the feeling of gnashing something between his teeth to be comfortable. If he laughs at an inappropriate moment, it isn’t because he doesn’t know better – he just doesn’t care enough to stop himself from feeling alive.

Appearance
Hisoka isn’t a very outstanding person, physically. He’s of relatively average height and weight, and his build is neither beefy nor scrawny. His oval face and big, almond-shaped sandy eyes give him somewhat of a baby face. His skin is moderately tanned, having been paler when he lived in the Hidden Mist but gaining some color in the years that he’s been in the Hidden Cloud. He has some freckles, mostly spotting along his cheeks and nose, over his shoulders, and down his back, though the stray freckle can be found scattered here and there across his body. Probably most noticeable of these stray freckles in one relatively large one that resides just below Hisoka’s bottom lip, right in the middle. His hair is lighter than his skin tone and similar in color to his sandy eyes, as well as wavy and hangs off of his head, the length to about his chin all around. He doesn’t have any facial hair as of now, save for his eyebrows that is.
Clothes wise, he never cared for anything outlandish. On any given day, Hisoka will wear shirts and pants of generic shinobi make and value. His preferred color choices are earth tones, and he tried to wear clothes that don’t hang off of his body too much, as having too much room is uncomfortable for him. Most notably, Hisoka tries not to leave home without his Mandolin in tune and attached to his back via a strap going around his chest (like a modern day seat belt).
Having grown up no stranger to street fights, Hisoka sports just a few scars across his body, earned from scraps in the alleyways that had taken nasty turns. The longest of these is a jagged scar that runs from the top of his rib cage on the far left side horizontally down across his torso to inches from his belly button. He also has the scar of a stab wound on his back, a few inches away from his spinal card but altogether far to close for comfort. Aside from these larger scars, small knicks and discoloration scars from fighting decorate his otherwise lean limbs. His only facial scar takes the shape of a line about an inch long on the right side of his forehead, just below his hair line, but this one isn't easily noticed as his hair tends to cover it. That isn't to mean that he has bangs really, but his hair is long enough that it covers the scar most of the time whilst still not falling into his face.
Hisoka wears the village insignia on a headband, which he ties haphazardly around his head. It's never straight or uniform, but rather always sitting at an angle on his head. The insignia is typically facing upward and to the left. Aside from the Mandolin that is almost always either strung across Hisoka's back or being played in his arms, the headband's reflective surface is probably the thing that stands out about his appearance the most, and Hisoka prefers it that way. He was never a fan of standing out in a crowd.

Background
Growing up on the streets, Hisoka never really had a family aside from his fellow homeless brothers and sisters. He never knew who his mom or dad was, only that from the very beginning he couldn’t rely on anybody but himself to keep his stomach full and his body warm and dry at night. He had to learn to manage on his own, and while using the people around him to survive became second nature to him, he knew he couldn’t trust any of them, thus resulting in his present day struggle to create meaningful and honest relationships. When he was eight years old, he and a couple of the other local street dwellers had found a secret place just outside of the town borders to call their own – a spacious, hidden cave. They’d thought that they could call this place their makeshift home seeing as they had few other options as a band of orphans. It wasn’t ideal – they often stole from one another so the atmosphere was often devious – but it was something big enough to keep them all out of the cold at night, so it was settled! Unfortunately, one night Hisoka returned to their hidden home only to find mangled bodies decorating the hard floors and blood painting the walls. Every familiar face was gaping in lifeless terror. Hisoka didn’t stay to see who or what didn’t stand for their presence there. He just ran, and never looked back to that cave again.
It was during the years that after that incident that he discovered he could do some peculiar things. If he focused, he could stand on the water’s surface and walk up trees (for a while, until he was distracted and fell to either hard ground or underwater). When some of the local adults saw him standing in the middle of a river and called him a young shinobi, Hisoka realized that maybe he could be just that! After all, why wait to be mangled and killed by something terrible in what he thought was an abandoned cave when he could possibly avoid all of that? A little work now, sure, but in the end it’d probably be worth it. And so, Hisoka walked himself into the Cloud’s academy and enrolled himself into training.
The people of the Hidden Cloud took kinder to him after he started training to be a shinobi. He didn’t know why, but to be frank he didn’t care. All he cared about what that he was now being given a place to live and food and clothes, and he enrolled in a school where he’d learn to be a shinobi of the Hidden Cloud and keep his own hide alive. He’d have preferred to be trained without having to bare the village’s insignia on a headband, but if haphazardly tying this thing on crooked around his head meant that they’d keep him alive and teach him how to be strong and stop treating him like a waste of resources, than Hisoka was willing to wear just about whatever they wanted.
