Character Depth
Personality:
Nikola's personality really couldn't be described in extremes. He's generally a nice guy who's happy to give a helping hand to people in need. Provided he has the skills required to lend aid. He tends to view people and situations on a case-by-case basis rather than living in a world of black and white. In fact, one of his strengths is his ability to judge people without any sort of discrimination. Due in no small part to the fact that he really hasn't met enough people to form general opinions about any one group.
His sheltered existence has fostered a moderate curiosity and drive to learn. This is tempered by a cautionary spirit coupled with a bit of fear where the unknown is concerned. He isn't one to rush into a dark cave without preparation, but he would want to know what was in there eventually. Nik tends to be willing to compromise, sometimes overly so. This is mainly due to the only people in his life all being fairly hard headed. These people also lead him to develop a pretty good sense of right and wrong that doesn't always align with the laws of the land.
Mainly though, Nikola is creative. His love for crafting new objects and learning new skills to improve his trades are really the only traits rigidly locked into his makeup. There isn't anything that compares to the joy of watching a new sword emerge from a lump of steel or combining seemingly disparate components to make a new and interesting gadget. Beyond this he's fairly easy going and simple. He doesn't need an extravagant house or fine clothes to be happy. Just give him a hammer and forge and he will want for nothing.
Appearance:
Some might say Nikola is a handsome guy. He has a rectangular face that ends in a square jaw and gives his head a somewhat boxy quality when viewed from the front. His nose is sharply pointed and slightly upturned at the tip. Coal black eyes peer out from between prominent eyelashes beneath thick dark brows. He wears his dirty blonde hair cut short, and often ignores it after waking preferring a lazy unkempt look. There is also a small scar above his right eye caused by metal cast off from the forge.
Hard labor trimmed his baby fat off at a young age. Replacing it with lean muscle that has only recently started to gain mass. He has both wide shoulders and decent height that make him slightly larger than others in his age group. His skin has a healthy tan from a good amount of work outside and his hands and feet are both pretty heavily calloused despite his relative youth. Even though he's sixteen and well into puberty his body and face are essentially hairless due largely to his genetics. His arms and chest are also home to more than a few scars from various minor incidents.
He usually wears a tank top, shorts, and sandals when he isn't working, but in the smithy protective clothing is essential. The center piece of his work outfit is a large leather apron capable of soaking up all of the sparks produced by his trade. This is paired with thick gloves that extend past his elbows to allow for the handling of hot metals and to offer further protection. He trades his shorts for heavy cloth pants, and his sandals are exchanged for steel-toed boots. Whether inside or outside of the shop he generally has a cigarette between his lips and his butt bag either on his waist or sitting nearby for easy access. Finally, he has a pair of goggles that he usually wears up on his forehead but drops down over his eyes for extra protection when necessary.
Background:
Born the third child of a rather poor couple in the countryside of Kusa no Kuni Nikola Enki seemed destined to eke out the same meager existence as the rest of his family. He lived with his family in a small cabin that had been built by his grandfather near one of the small forests that dotted the landscape of the country. They didn't really have a source of income or any need for one. They grew vegetables in a small plot beside the house, and when they wanted meat they would go into the woods to hunt. As a result of this the young boy grew up working hard for his meals. Whether it was chopping wood, setting traps, or tending the garden he always had something to occupy his days.
Nikola didn't meet individuals from outside his family until he was nearly twelve years old. Most of the Enki clan's supplies came from the world around them, but occasionally they would make the long trip to Aokusa where they would trade for certain things. These trips were so infrequent that in all of his first twelve years his father and older brothers had only been to the city twice. It was on this first journey that he met a blacksmith by the name of Welund and felt the first hints of his interest in metalworking. This was also where Nikola discovered curiosity. He had never really wondered about the world outside his family. Obviously he knew there were other people in the world, but he had never understood why one would seek them out.
Aokusa opened the boy's mind in ways he never thought possible. Not only did other families live differently than his own, but some people didn't live with their families at all. The size of the city combined with the number of people it was home to and the variety of ways they lived their lives left him awestruck. Even after returning to his clan's homestead and settling back into the way of life he was accustomed to Aokusa was all he could talk about. Then in a fit of annoyance with the child's nonstop chatter his father told him that there were even larger cities out there. Well that settled it. Nikola needed to leave his family and see the world!
After two years his oldest brother, then twenty, left the family to make his life elsewhere. Nikola pleaded with his parents for the entirety of the following year to allow him to do the same. Despite his youth he eventually wore them down and was allowed to leave for Aokusa just after his fifteenth birthday. He showed up on Welund's doorstep without much more than the clothes on his back and asked for an apprenticeship. The boy certainly didn't know much about the workings of the world, but the smith saw something in him and relented. Welund was a master blacksmith who used Katon techniques in his forging, and he promised to teach Nik chakra manipulation as well as smithing.
By the age of sixteen Nikola's progress was astounding. Not only had he learned quite a bit in the ways of the smith, but he had become accustomed to society as well. Nik found that he had a natural ability in pretty much any skill he set his mind to. Welund and his apprentice both decided that it would be a waste for the boy to stick solely to smithing. Despite not being in a ninja village the primary customers of the smithy were ninja. So Welund tasked Nikola with creating a full complement of ninja tools. Once this was completed the boy would be allowed to move onto other crafts.
