emories led Ai to places and times which she had not recalled for ages. This time, they led her to a cold winter day some years ago. The weather, quite unlike the current, was unforgiving and Ai was sealed inside her home without as much as an idea of what she could do to spend the time inside. Despite agreeing to the fullest that it wasn't anything short of a pity that her books were gathering dust on the shelves, she didn't feel like reading. She was too devastated to return to her love novels, especially then, after the death of her absolute beloved. Sitting on a hard, uncomfortable arm-chair & watching the snow slowly turning the horizon white, Ai could relate. Her life has lost colour & meaning. At that moment, Ai was willing to do anything to find a purpose - to find something that would stop her dwelling into grief and brighten up her existence. A clichéd message from fate was sent to her that day as one of her dresses weighted a bit too much on the hanger it was placed on and fell on the floor. The hanger hit the floor, grabbing Ai's attention. She stood up and went to the piled dress which had collected all the dirt from the floor. "O, beautiful dress, shell of the shell - me at my prime. If one would just look at you now, on the ground, gathering the filth. Is that the fate of all that is deemed beautiful? Where is your value, when you are not worn?" The dress would of course miss to reply as it was inanimate - an object, much like the object Ai felt like. Much like the dress, Ai felt she had no value if there was nobody to treasure her, but was she wrong to feel like that? Ai picked the dress as if it was her child and looked at it. It was beautiful. Every stitch on it was brilliant - elegant. That dress was more alive than Ai was. The passion & love of the tailor went into every single stitch. Their whole attention & dedication. Did that person also have nobody to focus their love towards? Or was it just a profession? A hobby?
Before too long, Ai was with a needle and thread. She knew little to nothing about sewing but knew that she could waste her time like that & quite frankly, for her, at that very moment, there was nothing else she'd rather do but just breeze through the passing hours. What she would sew wouldn't be a dress though, no. She was too inexperienced to create something with value. Instead, she would use the fabric of old, dusty pieces of clothing from the depths of her wardrobe to create something as simple as a handkerchief. First came the cutting of the fabric. She had selected an old skirt of hers to tear apart. When would she ever wear a skirt again, she thought. Why? Who would take interest in the physique of an ageing woman - who would care to pick up a dying flower? She remembered why she bought that particular skirt. It was to mark the second anniversary of her wedding - something, once a joy, now a sad memory. A square was cut off the back of the soft skirt. The scissors ran through the fabric like a hot knife would run through butter.
The square was imperfect, but Ai would run the scissors once more to fix the shape, using the aid of a ruler. The torn piece of fabric would sit on her lap when Ai would realize that her eyes were tearing. The tears would drop on top of the cheerful-pink square she just cut off. At that moment she realized that what she cut was a precious memory of hers. Instantly, she was overran by grief once more, but that pain would in a moment straighten her resolve. She was not cutting a memory. She was giving a meaning to it. Despite bought for a special occasion, despite being a link to her deceased lover, that skirt was a piece of fabric and being turned into something useful would give a new meaning to it. Ai ran the thread through the needle and formed a knot in the end. She picked the tear-soaked fabric from her lap into her small left hand and ran the needle through the fabric. She was going to go around the edges of the soon-to-be handkerchief so the barely visible imperfections from the process of cutting the piece of fabric off would turn completely invisible. Running the needle through the fabric, Ai accidentally welcomed it with the tip of her thumb. The needle was sharp & her hands were delicate - a small drop of crystal clear crimson blood ran down her thumb and onto the handkerchief, but that didn't bother Ai. A drop of blood was a sacrifice she was willing to make, if that's what it would take her to immortalize the memories between her and her beloved.
She tried to stitch in a cross-manner, though that was hardly ever the case. It was her first attempt ever to sew, so imperfections were allowed. The shapes sewed would vary. Some of the stitches were too close to each other, others were too far apart, thirds crossed each-other and bent the fabric. Not once or twice did Ai start everything over. Not once or twice did Ai ruin the fabric & cut a new piece. The skirt, once whole was now reduced to ribbons, sacrificed for the creation of something as simple as a handkerchief. Though not managing to create what she originally desired, Ai managed to fulfil her initial goal - to kill time and in the end, she did make a handkerchief, or at least something that resembled one. Purple thread over pink fabric, the edges of the fabric were sewed together. Granted, the stitches were imperfect, in fact, they were barely even decent, but Ai was happy with the outcome. With tiny holes poked through the tip of her thumb, with her hand exhausted from sewing and with thread bundle almost over, Ai lifted the handkerchief up and looked at it. This piece of fabric with stitches on it still held the memory of Ai's love, but now the thread, soaked with blood and tears, was holding the memories there & they were now eternal.
