"You heard the old man, he's leaving before sundown. It'll just be the girl here till tomorrow, if we come back after he leaves it'll be easy."
"You're just anxious because you lost your money in that bet last night,"
"That's not the point! Listen, we'll be quick. If we kill her there will be no witnesses-"
Kojika stopped listening at this point, having heard enough of the strangers conversation to be sure. He'd gotten a bad feeling from them the moment he'd entered the small store, something about how they held themselves and glanced around setting him on edge. It definitely wasn't any of his business, but he wasn't exactly going to just let their plan happen. With a promise to himself he would return before sundown, Kojika patted his horses cheek reassuringly before easily hauling himself up. He'd have to get a nap in before tonight if he was going to stay up.
Just as the sun was setting, Kojika slipped slightly further into the small alleyway he'd been loitering in. He watched as the shop owner waved goodbye to his daughter before leaving and Kojika couldn't help but sigh in relief. He hadn't been late then. Kawa's curious huff behind him distracted Kojika for a moment, "Now, don't start getting your tail in a bunch. Just...making sure everything's ok." Kojika pet through his horses mane, ignoring the huff the mustang gave in return. The sound of people approaching got Kojika to focus again, "Stay here." He ignored how Kawa pawed at the ground at that, instead stepping between the group of men and the shop.
The sun had just dipped below the horizon as Kojika placed himself between the group of four men. A brief flicker of anxiety seeped through him as he eyed them; they obviously were accustomed to fighting...where as Kojika was much more accustomed to running. Still.. "Do you all really think talking about your plans to rob an innocent girl is a smart thing to do in public where anyone can hear you?"
"Doesn't seem to matter much when the only person to show up is a slight little thing like you, does it?" The one who spoke stood off to the right, the man who'd wanted to do this in the first place. Before Kojika could say anything else the man to the left lunged at him.
On pure surprised instinct alone, Kojika stepped to the side and grabbed the mans arm, leaning forward and pressing against his elbow the wrong way. Th resulting crack was nothing compared to the mans scream and Kojika let go, stumbling away in surprise. He hadn't meant to break his arm.
"You're gonna regret that."
"Oh, but I already do." Kojika took a step back, wanting to run. He felt relief knowing he'd at least distracted them from robbing the girl. As they tried to get ahold of him he led them further and further away form the shop. The girl would wake up tomorrow without a single idea of what almost happened.
When they finally caught him, Kojika didn't mind so much. He'd done something good after all.
