name: iori shinjiro
bloodlimit: non-applicable
height: six foot three inches
weight: one hundred and eighty seven pounds
age: eighteen years old
gender: male
alignment: chaotic neutral
birth country: tsuchi no kuni
village: amegakure no sato
personality: a character of a dubious pedigree. he is a silent and secretive man, not one to waste words in badinage or pleasantries. having lived a past addled with strife, he has been left cold and distant, possessing singularities that cause his gaze to be ever-steely, and his speech ever-austere. beneath his taciturn visage, he is a janus-faced individual who exhibits a multifarious deportment; in one breath, he can show signs of cordiality or rancor, whichever would aid his current milieu. he shields his heart just as closely as he wears a mask over his face, his public persona nothing more than a masquerade. yet, you would never presume such a disposition of his character -- at least, not to such a severe degree; both a magisterial control of his emotions and a cunning acumen serve him well in concealing his thoughts and feelings.
he is by and far an opportunistic and somewhat selfish creature, at least when convenience permits. indeed, precaution is his watchword, for a shinobi can easily be parted with his head due to carelessness or greed; but this does not stop him from considering, and even acting upon, fortuities that would advance his agenda -- whatever that might be. he possesses no illusions or fantasies of the world in which he lives in: to be a shinobi is to be equal parts honorable and ruthless; one must work both in the light and the dark. it is somewhere in between that he lives, capable of levelly playing the role of cohort or cutthroat. insofar as his continued existence as a shinobi, he lives by the moral inclination keen to him: that of neutrality. this is the sole reason for his fidelity to any one particular organization; in the same vein, it is also the same reason that he would ever repudiate that fidelity.
this complexity of his persona meshes well with his everyday proclivities. he is always occupied with one task or another, from such simple things as running errands to more complicated objectives, such as undertaking missions. in this day and age, when a shinobi's worth is derived directly from the tactical value he or she brings to the village, one cannot hope to remain infirm for long; to this extent, the advancement of his skills is his main goal, for a powerless shinobi is a worthless shinobi. taught the cold truth of the world, he values strength above all else, respecting those with power to their name. knowing that he himself is currently not at the level he wants to be, he is humble insofar as his own limitations go; in truth, he loathes the weak, or those who cannot muster the gumption to change their life's station. while not directly hostile towards such people, if he is able to ascertain this frailty in character, not even his amicable facade will be enough to conceal his contempt.
appearance: a tall, lithe man whose svelte figure belies the impressive strength he possesses. he moves with such elegance and mastery over his body that it appears light and effortless. having such a willowy frame, his musculature naturally contours across his body in an agreeable manner. he possess angular muscles that are both defined and toned, thus benefiting his long, slender limbs with the suppleness and strength required to carry out his missions. a plethora of scars and wounds paint his body with lessons of battle he hasn't forgotten; his skin is rugged and durable, and his hands rough and accustomed to the grit of battle.
he is a battle-hardened individual, both in mind and body: his visage is flinty and imposing, his gaze stern and steely. his sharp facial features leaves one to wonder if he's always brooding. he has a long oval face, with a keen angular chin. this skin in particular is quite tight, and it serves well in highlighting the sharp bone structure of his face. his lips are slim and always shaped into a scowl; thus his cheeks remain unaffected by the creases of smiling, and show no signs of wrinkles. behind his taut lips, his mouth houses two perfect rows of toothy enamel; his canines are prominent and sharp, and make him look almost predatory. just above his maw is a thin, roman nose with small nostrils. sitting just above that are two piercing orbs of a deep aquamarine hue. his stare is fiercely penetrating, aided by his semi-thick and linear brows which are oft times furrowed. atop his head sits a crown of silken, sable-black hair. he usually maintains it tied in the back as a ponytail, though it is prone to falling down slightly past his eyes if left unkempt.
being convenient trumps being fashionable, thus he dresses simply. his regular adornments, the customary issued attire of amegakure shinobi, are of a masterwork fit; they doubly serve to compliment his figure and allow him great freedom of movement. within the inner folds of his shirt is where he keeps his tanto concealed; it rests besides his abdomen sinistrally to accommodate his right-handedness. geared with a chest rig, shinjiro dons his slate grey load bearing vest for missions and the like, his accouterments always well-kept and battle-ready.
background: born within the borders of tsuchi no kuni, shinjiro was the third and final born of his family, a lowly ichizoku comprised solely of soldiers of fortune. an ill omen from genesis, his birth heralded the death of his mother, his conception weakening her, and his contrivance robbing her of the remainder of her vitality. left wantonly at the doors of a nearby hut, he was raised at the whim of a hoary old lady, who took pity on the child. he was raised by this woman up until he could walk and fend for himself, at which point she treated him like a man, his earliest memories involving the dour and dreary environs of the borderlands of the earth country.
just before reaching the age of nine, his family -- or the remnants of, returned in search of the boy. unbeknownst to shinjiro, his kinsmen had whittled down, and it was for this reason his father returned, ready to take the boy and hone him into a shinobi worthy of hire. there was a nearby hideout his family used, and that would be their destination: a place high atop the tors and deep within the gullies of tsuchi no kuni. for shinjiro, the trek was grueling and dangerous. the path they took had precarious footing, but having maneuvered such obstacles since he could walk, he was already accustomed to the terrain. the spartan environ of the earth country required a certain level of fortitude to survive in, and this was something shinjiro knew all too well; yet, even then, due to his age and inexperience, he was worn out and in poor shape, the difference between himself and his kin evident in their pace and breathing. but the boy would not yield; after an arduous two day journey, they reached their destination. it was there where the portentous threads of his fate would begin to spin anew.
with a brief explanation of their heritage and situation, shinjiro was quickly thrust into a quagmire he could not escape: either survive the family training to become a shinobi, or die. with little recourse other than the options of life or death, shinjiro steeled himself for the harrowing trials to come. indeed, the lessons he would go on to learn would be painful and toilsome, the consummation of his training produced solely through diligence or the positive reinforcement of castigation. he would go on to learn the basics of chakra, ninjutsu, taijutsu, and stealth, all at a pace set by the coming-and-goings of his kinsmen. his tutelage would last only two years before the reality of his family's situation would set in; impatient and needing men for missions, his father would take shinjiro along with him for the first time on an outing: an assassination request.
a full moon, the night of the mission would herald the death of both the target and one other, his father, shinjiro's misfortune playing true to the ominous star he was born under. with the iori patriarch dying at the hands of the wanted man, shinjiro struck while the enemy's tanto was still enveloped in his father's flesh -- kill or be killed. it was on that night that shinjiro witnessed the verity of the world, an indifference and solitariness that indurated his heart, and fortified his worldview. growing up, his temperament was as barren as the outlier lands he was raised in; while in training, his heart was tempered by the cold lessons of pain and failure. indeed, the emotions he had thus felt were all a product of his environment, though for the first time he felt an inexplicable ire swell within him.
to shinjiro, fate was a cruel mistress, a phlegmatic puppeteer that strung men along as if rag-dolls. but this realization gave him the wherewithal needed to chart his own course, and plot his own destiny. having already glimpsed into the cold lives shinobi could lead, shinjiro resolved to live for himself; but he knew that he needed to get stronger, and for that he would need allies. with an insouciance that could only be attributed to his training hitherto, he left the dying men behind and fled eastward, to the lands of the rain country. there, he would seek asylum, claiming he was an orphan with no recollection of his family. after some time, he would become a citizen of amegakure no sato, promptly enrolling into the ninja academy to become a full-fledged shinobi. he would become a genin in a year and a half, his previous training proving fruitful in accomplishing the rudimentary techniques required for graduation. in this time, however, he struggled with integrating into society, and it was due to this conflict that he developed, in time, a public persona.
with a hitai-ate to commemorate his induction into the rank of shinobi, shinjiro now spends his time completing missions and getting stronger.
