Ryutatsu had but a moment to react to the blinding light and it did blind him. But the boy Shoko would find that blinding Ryutatsu even for a moment did not disorient him. For Ryutatsu had trained all of his senses not just his eyes to be sharp. The sounds of his foot steps backwards was enough to give Ryutatsu information of where to step forward. He stepped forward and dipped low to evade any likely punches.
Then Ryutatsu rose with a powerful off knee strike to the boy's side. Ryutatsu wasn't even going all out but kept close to his opponent to where even arm length is to far. There was several critical distances in close combat the furthest being that of a blade. Katana's and longswords operate at this distance. Closing in was the range of kicks, still easily avoidable by the suitably nimble.
Ryutatsu was even closer than that, for the next distance was arm length and that was where most unarmed combat was engaged. But still there is separation and you need that distance for full power generally. Ryutatsu was even closer he was at elbow, knee, and headbutt range. At this range it was blocks and only the fastest could dodge, there was no room. It was just short of wrestling with an opponent. And Ryutatsu was among the fastest there was, this was his distance when not using the sword.
