The Green Teahouse is about half a mile away from the center of Kusagakure, and sees relatively decent business. It has an open, glass store front, a cute, chic café vibe to it, and sells a variety of hot and cold teas. There are a variety of small table spaces, for one or more guests to sit, read the news and enjoy their drink. A small selection of pastries are served, but the main attraction is the place to be and the tea.
When I entered, holding my mission slip in my left hand, the manager looked relieved. He was a bulky man, with a blading head, a slightly greasy brownish beard, and a white apron over a collared shirt. I got the impression that maybe under ideal circumstances he didn't have to cook or clean, and the apron was a concession to necessity. Regardless, he was clearly in somewhat dire straits, and the look of relief on his face made me feel good about the work I was doing.
"Are you the ninja I sent for?"
"Yes, sir." I said, walking towards the back of the shop where he was standing. I noticed a wooden counter over which orders could be made. Behind it were a few containers of hot water, a couple of clear containers of some kind of iced tea, and a display case where pastries and slices of cake were stored.
"Thank God. And you're dressed the part too."
I blushed slightly. My pink skirt and shirt, my matching hat, and my small bag on my waist didn't look entirely inappropriate for waitresses. With some of the unique looks many of my peers wear, I could imagine why he would be relieved to see someone dressed as I was. "So, what do you need?"
"Alright, I can reasonably expect a decent rush in here any time now. There are two types of customers here at Green Tea. One comes up to the counter when they walk in, and then sits down for us to bring them their order. The other just sits down and waits for somebody to come over and interest them in a drink or some food. I can take care of the orders and making the tea for people who come to the counter, but I'm going to need you to ask guests who have been sitting a while with nothing to drink what it is they want. Got it?"
The man was obviously very busy. He was filling a pot with water, which I suspected he was about to heat up to make tea. Just then, a customer walked in. Silently he pointed towards a relatively isolated corner, in which I assumed I was supposed to stand, and towards an apron - white with pink embroidery - which I assumed I was to wear.
As I headed back towards my corner, I noticed the customer wasn't going up to the bar. That was my cue. I waited a minute or two, let him take off his coat and begin to peruse the papers we had lying about as reading material, before I walked over to him. He was wearing some sort of bowler type hat, and his eyes were fixed on the paper he was reading the whole time. It looked like some sort of Fierian paper, but I wasn't exactly sure. Something about a archaeological find.
"Good morning, sir. Could I interest you in some tea? Or maybe something to eat?" I tried my best to sound the part of a waitress.
"Oolong. Hot. Medium. Black." Came his staccato reply. He didn't look up at me for one second. When I went back behind the counter, the manager smiled at me gently. I poured out a cup of hot water into a mug - I presumed the middle-sized one was medium - and opened the box labeled "Oolong." I noticed immediately, however, that it was empty.
"Crap. There should be more out back. Here, you man the counter." The manager said, before ducking out the door behind the counter. And just like that, I was left to run the place by myself, if only for a minute or two.
