This is totally free form and anything you can justify IC I will allow within reason.

Okuda if he followed his instructions would find himself near a hollowed log in the middle of a small scarce grouping of trees. It was night time in the land of Kaminari No Kuni and the cold autumn air was whistling through the rocky spires and thin mountain trees. The faint scent of dust and cold stone were obvious indicators that winter was quickly approaching. There were no sings of early snow or frost but the temperatures had dropped quickly under the new moon sky. 

There in the hollow log would sit the Dead Drop that Okuda was sent to collect. A small ceramic canister that contained the orders that Okuda was sent to receive. Far off the beaten track and obviously hidden away the orders or the mission tasker had obviously wanted to take the utmost security in making sure these orders were secured. 

The night was at it's Zenith and there would only be five or six hours before the sun would start to make its climb up and across the horizon.

GODDAMN COLD

Walking up to the hollowed out log, the man kept his body held close to itself, arms wrapped tightly around his own body in an attempt to deal with the bitter cold that had enveloped the land. Okuda wore his usual navy blue Kimono and white hakama, on his feet were his tabi and toe socks, all normal things that were easily visible on the man. On his hip was the only tools of the trade he needed, his Katana and his Wakizashi with these two items he was strong enough to handle most any situation that would come up.

Okuda looked around in the dark night sky, wondering if anyone had followed him, knowing this was a do or die mission that meant more than just an enemy of the village would be assassinated. Okuda rested his left hand on his Katana’s sheath as he crouched down, readying his weapon by placing his thumb against its hand guard to aid in launching into an attack if need be. Once he was sure no one was around, the red haired man reached in, grabbing the item that was within the log.

Without waiting further and using still only one hand the man opened the canister and pulled out the documents within, reading the information that had his target within it.

Name: The Shadow of Castle Blood Veil

Difficulty: Hard
Description: Here in the frozen stronghold of Blood Veil castle is a very powerful ninja named Hideko Toshi. To put it simply your only goal is to make sure that Hideko is dead. This mission has no time limit. But under no circumstance may you allow him to escape from the keep. To the best of our knowledge he has no idea that anyone is after him but Hideko is a paranoid individual and has a dozen or so guards in his compound. The gang as a whole is irrelevant.
Objective: Find and kill Hideko Toshi and bring back something to confirm his kill.
Reward: 250.000 Ryo and the title of Jonin.

Okuda would find himself reading the mission parameters above him. There would be a small map showing the general direction of Castle Blood Veil. It would appear to be about three miles to the east. But based on his clothing he was not properly clothed to handle temperatures of this condition. The cold winds would strip away what small amounts of body heat he had. While not quiet freezing if he stayed out in the open for a few hours he would start to suffer the onset stages of hypothermia. With the location on the map what would the ninja do next?

Blood shall fall like snow.

Okuda, knowing that there was no point in staying out in the cold, tucked the documents away in the ceramic container and placed it back in the hollowed out log, the chances of someone finding that before he got back were slim and it would not really matter all too much. He had memorized the basic layout of the map and such and headed towards the castle wanting to get this bastard removed already and return to the warmth of the place he lived within. Trudging through the cold, Okuda knew that the temperature would only continue to drop as the night wore on.

Keeping his left hand on the sheath of his sword the man picked up his pace until he was running full tilt, his thumb pressed against the hand guard of his Katana. He ran until he was near the location of the castle, keeping himself just at the edge of the treeline that would no doubt surround it or whatever natural or manmade cover he could find. He would need to do some early recon on the outside to figure out the best plan to assault the keep…

Without a compass okuda took off along the woodline in a random direction. In a new moon without any real direction sense he took off in a Full Sprint. Without any source of light or ability to see in the dark the bounding would be messy. As he crashed through the forest he would cause excessive noise and lose his footing several times. Crashing into small branches whipping across his face and welting his body and face as he moved at his speed. As he moved he created heavy footprints that would be easy to track if anyone came across them.

Okuda took off towards the east heading towards a deepening valley. After running a couple hundred meters he would find himself at a stream running through the valley. The water was starting to ice over ever so slightly as the cold waters flowed through the valley. The ground was getting much softer as there was less rock and more dirt and mud. There were several thick and heavy foot prints in the muddy shore. But his lack of tracking would make him unable to determine who or what made those tracks or even the relative freshness of the tracks. 1-100

WINTER AND AUTUMN SUCK

After running for a while, Okuda figured that he was running in the incorrect destination. Knowing very little about the area, Okuda took a deep breath and started to think back on what little he had learned of using his geography to find himself, paying no attention to the footprints assuming them to be older prints from some animal or persons unknown. Deciding that staying in one spot would be only a hinderance the man began to head south west roughly of his position, or at least in the direction he assumed it to be. This time he did not sprint or run he moved at a brisk pace however, not wanting to let his body get too cold and knowing that movement would keep it at bay.

As he moved, he would make small marks in tree’s so that he could try to create his own landmarks, each one slightly different so if he ended up going in a circle he could figure out where in the circle he was. He also occasionally peeked up to the stars to try to determine what direction he was headed using the stars. Hopefully the moon would peek out from behind the clouds and illuminate the area somewhat.

If the moon did illuminate the area he would use its light to try to find whatever, whether it did or not the man would take a few branches from a nearby tree, some bark and a few stones if he could find them to make a sort of rudimentary torch, something basic to give him some light, even if it meant he would give up some of his nighttime camouflage to do so.

Okuda's sense of survival was kicking it seemed. As he started to gather up some sticks and stones and tree bark he would need to find some way to create a spark to light the wood. As he moved around the trees he would leave distinguishing marks on the sides of the trees. This way he could retrace his steps if he got lost. Still down in the valley he was unknowingly nearby the only source of water around these parts. The rocks around here were slick and wet and seemed to have a glassy sheen to them much like the stones Okuda had picked up not to long ago. Perhaps these would create sparks?

FIRE GOOD

Taking a few rocks and the large branch he had found, the man also gathered as much kindling as he could, placing it next to the larger branch that he had gotten. He then began to strike the two stones together, trying to make a spark land in the kindling so it could light the top of the branch aflame. It was not the most elegant solution but in this situation, it was one of the few things he could do to try to make it so that he could get a source of both warmth and light.

As he struck the rocks together, angled so that the sparks would head towards his makeshift kindling, he continued to keep an eye on the sky occasionally trying to gleam any sort of idea what direction was what with a guiding star of some kind. He also kept a close eye as well on his attempt to create a makeshift torch, if he managed to get a spark into the kindling he would begin to blow into it to try to grow the fire so that it would be useful for his purposes.

If he succeeded, he would spend a moment warming his body by the fire and grabbing a few extra branches that he would stick in his obi belt. After that, he would begin to walk in the direction he was best able to glean was the correct way based on his memory of the map and the landmarks he could see both in the sky and now on the ground with his torch that he would have made.

With the cold and the relatively windy environment it would take some time. In fact it would take an absolutely long and frustrating experience a shower of sparks would finally bed in the kindling and start a small smokey fire. The fire wouldn't be producing much in the way of heat. But it would be hungrily looking for more to consume. The branch he cut would start to slowly burn. It just being a regular piece of wood wouldn't burn like a traditional oily torch but it would be bright enough to give him light up to about 3-4 feet from his body. He now had the ability to set up camp for the night or continue to try and press on. 

Even still the ninja decided to press onwards. From the best of his memory this river ran north to south. Knowing this he could at least get a decent understanding of which cardinal direction he needed to head. But without being able to identify any of the local landmarks from a distance he would have no real gauge of the distance away from the target he was. He had an important decision to make. To camp for the night here or to try to find the location via torch light and guesstimates.

RESTING

Taking stock of his situation, and knowing that the man was not exactly in a rush to leave his castle any time soon, the redhaired man decided to make a rudimentary structure to protect him from the elements as well as a larger campfire. He ate a small ration pack that he had had with him, it was not the best tasting food he had ever eaten but it was enough to get him through this night in which he had failed to prepare properly for the task at hand. Okuda knew that he would have to wait for the sun to rise and then fall again to properly do this task entirely but he would succeed even if it killed him.

After eating the meal that had all the nutritional value, he needed but lacked the flavors that would make him want more, he settled in for the night. Stoking the fire for a while with whatever kindling, he could get and then fell asleep using whatever he could to add to his warmth knowing that the campfire would go out without someone there to stoke it continuously. Hopefully the daylight would make his job of finding the castle an easier one…

Okuda unassumingly used his blade to make a crude lean to and keep the shelter going and the fire burning ever warmer. Finally he would feel the numbness leave his bones as he the cold wet mud that covered his legs and hands started to dry. Okuda now had a base camp right next to the base of the river. But was this where he was going to keep his camp? On the base of the river bank? Would he rest until the following morning? There were a lot of things he needed to decide. 

He would decide to sleep at the river bank. The ninja was relatively far from the castle unbenownst to him so hopefully that would make it harder for any patrols in the area to come across him. However the excessive amount of tracks, smoke and cuts in the trees would more then likely make it easier for someone or some thing to find him.

Okuda would awaken as the dawn was beginning to beset the land. The dark black sky was now a crimson violet as a predawn grey started to break upon the horizon line. As the horizons vivid colors started to appear the dark misty backdrop of several mountains lay in the far distance. Okuda would remember those mountains vaguely on the map as the general destination that he would need to go. It was still a cold and crisp morning. Dew covered the stone around him as the smaller vegetation were coated in the condensation of the mountains spring that were running all night. Okuda would awake cold, damp and groggy from his poor and damp encampment on the river bank. But having been able to eat he still had plenty of energy to carry for the rest of the day.

Off Target.

Awakening from a less than optimal sleep the night prior, the man was slightly hungry still and sore but he knew he had no choice but to press on. Breaking down his camp and scattering the resources to make it look less man made, the man also put the sword back in its sheathe. The man looked at his surroundings when he noticed the mountain that he remembered seeing as being in the general direction of the castle from his map. Using that information of the mountain and roughly how far he was from it, he figured roughly where he was in comparison to the castle and knew that he was a ways off track.

Cursing his bad luck in this matter, the red haired man began to walk towards the location of the castle, moving slowly to try to conserve his energy. He also took the time to make his tracks less noticeable as that of a human beings – making sure to in essence scratch the spot he stood with his feet to make it less humanoid – even though it took more time, he wanted to make sure that he was less likely to be found. He continued towards the general location of the castle based on his memory of the map.

Part of the man wished now that he had brought the map with him, but what was done was done and to try to find it now would be tantamount to getting utterly lost in these woods and would lead him to his death. So on he trudged through the landscape, making slow but steady headway towards the place, stopping his movement as needed to conserve energy and to get his breath back.

Okuda moved from his camp and started slowly heading in the direction of the castle. While he was more aware of the literal foot prints he was leaving he altered his prints ever so slightly. While the prints were more conspicuous they didn't appear to be that of a human being.  Okuda would be moving in a general direction of the castle but without the map he really didn't know what he would be encountering along the way. 

Slowly the meters turned into kilomters as he traveled well over 3 kilometers until he finally noticed signs of obvious human settlement. (some things missed do to lack of observation.) Okuda would find what would look like an old huntsman's cabin as he got nearer to the cabin. There was no smoke coming from the chimney and there were no strong scents coming from the building itself. Okuda could continue to press on or explore here. The small wooden shack's front door and one cracked glass window faced him as he stood about 200 meters away.

As the man walked, he noticed the small wooden cabin draw nearer. Figuring that there could be more information within the cabin, or at least some general supplies, the man began to approach the sole building. As he neared it, the man began to look for any sorts of traps or devices meant to ward people or animals away. His left hand perched on his Katana’s hilt as he slowly, even slower than before, crept up to the building, his eyes darting from the broken window to the door, waiting for some sign of life or someone to try to attack him as he neared the building.
As he neared and was sure there was no immediate danger he would rap his right hand’s knuckles against the door and say “Hello? Is there anyone home? Speak now!” The man would then prepare himself, dropping into his preparatory stance for his Battōjutsu, hoping that no attacks came, he wanted to go for his target and go home, but he was making this…pitstop to gather some information and maybe get a decent meal if he could swing it.

Okuda would find no traps leading up to the cabin and as he threw the door open it would take his eyes a minute to adjust to the interior of the cabin. There was a cloud of dust settling in the cabin as the soft rays of light cut into the dark cabin. The cabin wouldn't reveal much on the inside besides a inactive lamp, worn wooden furnishings and a old straw bed in the corner of the room. A cracked glass window left some shards of broken glass on the floor. There were a few plastic bottles on a kitchen shelf that had long since had their labels worn down and removed with time. 

The building didn't seem to have been disturbed in quite some time but the real question was what the ninja would do with the shelter? Would he riffle through the cabinets looking for supplies to loot? Would he set this as his base of operations? Or would he simply turn and leave the cabin behind him as he moved on towards his objective.

WHAT GOODIES LAY IN WAIT?

Okuda would release the grip on his sword that he had as he looked through the cabin, glancing at everything and trying to see what he saw. The place was deserted; nothing lived or had lived there in a long time it seemed. Walking into the cabin, wary of the glass shards on the ground, the young man began to rifle through the cabin. Opening whatever chests or cabinets or boxes he would come across, making sure to open each one carefully in case there was any kind of traps on them, taking his time so he did not accidentally set off any trip mines or wires.

The exploration was successful without much event. It took the ninja about 20-30 minutes to find and collect all the items that might be of interest inside the cabin. It was still getting close to the high point of the morning and soon it would be approaching noon. At the end of the process Okuda would find a small hand mirror, some flour, a small bag of salt, several small pieces of silverware that were clearly tarnished from time exposed to the elements. Aside from that he would also find a small hunters satchel that held a small coil of rope and a multi tool.

No Good Loot

Sighing a bit, the assassin took stock of what he found, nothing of real use, perhaps if he were staying here for the long term it would be of use but in the state that the cabin was in now and the lack of supplies that were there, it would be pointless. However, the cabin still had its uses if he should need a base of operations for the length of his assassination mission. Placing everything inside of a single cupboard for ease later on the man would slowly walk out of the cabin, making note of any landmarks near it.

Back in the elements, the man would continue his journey towards where the castle was, wanting nothing more than to be done already the man would continue his trek knowing that he could not be that far away from where the castle was he would at least do some scouting this day hopefully to make a full plan of attack. Okuda also took stock of the variety of animals in the area in case he did need to stay the night in the area, wanting to not have to worry about having to find something to hunt if he needed to.

As Okuda ventured forwards he would move quickly without any real interruption as he roughly guessed the destination that he was heading towards. Okuda would notice that the trees were getting less and less thick as he moved closer to the mountains for whatever reason. After walking for roughly one hour from the cabin (items missed from poor observation.) He would eventually come across something that was impossible to miss. A dirt road that seemingly led towards the castle potentially. 

Okuda would note that there were several foot prints that were leading to and from the castle including two long heavy prints that ran vertically in two straight lines through the dirt. From where he was standing it was obvious that the castle and potentially people were up the road if he continued. What would the ninja do?
