Character Depth
Personality:
Kuroki despite his upbringing kept a bit of mischievousness of a child. He loved a good laugh especially at someone else's expense. This made him nuisance to the cops or anyone to close to him. He has no sense of personal boundaries when it come to pranks even ones that are potentially dangerous. He nothing for rules like that in general for in the streets the only rule is survive. He is brisk and seemingly rude to people because of his outwardly hostile and mischievous nature.
That is almost a creed of his is to survive no matter the cost, preferably the cost to others. The world owes him due to the bad hand he was dealt and he wants the world to pay up. Personally he knows that some rules have their places and wont break them for no reasons but he wont keep them for no reason either. Society as a whole could go away and it wouldn't change his outlook. He wasn't a happy kid but actually kind of dark but always had a small light in his heart for those that could find it.
He is inherently selfish after a life on the streets then the hard training of a ninja. Whatever he can to get the upper hand. Poisons no problem, stealing no problem, selling people no problem. Its there problem for being weak, they should at least put up a fight if they want his help. Or better yet have something he wants and making it easier to side with them than the other guy. It was one of his traits that earned him the name as Kuroki, the Black Aura of the waterfalls.
Appearance:
Kuroki is a large man in many ways, but the most obvious is his massive arms that hang from his trench coat. His arms are heavily muscles, and covered in scars from the many fights he has been in. Neither arm is covered by anything like a sleeve, it looks like the sleeves of his shirt and coat got ripped off, not that his muscles would have fit anyways. Around each wrist is a series of Tribal tattoos that few know that they actually mean something to him. What they mean to him though no one knows. His hands wears a reinforced fingerless knuckle glove that had dark silver skulls over each knuckle to protect him from the wires he likes to play with.
Across his barreled chest he wears a sleeveless shirt with the image of a waterfall of skulls. Its meaning obviously as dark as his outfit is. Also across his chest was a bandolier full of his personal equipment. On his face he wears a three quarters mask so know one knows his actual identity. The mask itself was an odd combination of blacks and greys that had the creepy appearance of grinning to one side. Only part of his mouth was revealed, and that is usually holding a cigar that is unlit in it. It was an affection of his to always have a cigar on him.
He was tall by most people standards which make people underestimate at which the speed he could move. His booted feet left heavy tread where he walks. It was one of the reasons he liked skating for it left less of an impression behind. He also wore his hood up on his trench coat to further mask his features from people. People might remember his size but few could accurately describe him.
Background:
Pre-Journey to the After Realms:
He doesn't know who gave birth to him as his earliest memory was of stealing to survive on the street. He lived in the alleys of the Village Hidden in Waterfalls. Supposedly he had just been abandoned there, he doesn't know or care. He grew up stealing and swindling to survive. As far back as he could remember it had been a dog eat dog kind of world for him. The strongest survived and he survived. Surviving required a certain amount of callousness that he cultivated to an air of distain.
He stayed on the streets for the longest time and took shelter in brothels and street corners for safety at night. It wasn't that he had no friends, he just didn't feel close to anyone. His usual act to make money and to survive actually was off his skill with a Yo-yo. He could make his yo-yo do wondrous things, and people paid him for the show. It was once just a child's toy he picked up out of the garbage but now it was his meal ticket. He had self taught all the basics of the Yo-yo and even learned a few moves to make himself have a weapon in a fight.
It was one day a shinobi saw his act and realized that this con-artist and street kid had potential. So the Shinobi convinced him to apply to the academy for shinobi and even sponsored him. This was a big turn around for Kuroki, for now he had an actual job to live off of. The Shinobi that had found him and helped him through the academy was none other a member of the Kasuta Clan. It was from him that he learned to like the taste of cigars and some tricks of how to use it in a fight.
Journey to the After Realms and Back:
Kuroki had delved to deep into the mysteries of the spirit in his haunted cavern behind a waterfall. While reading a tome of Necril, he did one of the things you should never do when reading in a strange language. He read aloud a passage of rebirth and travel through the afterlife. The passage was an incantation, and he experienced something akin to Astral Projection, but he actually died. His spirit completely left his body and as soon as it did, his body became like dust.
The tome fell through his desiccated body, scattering the dust until a small breeze out of no where blew him completely away. The original Kuroki Kenzaburo was no more, now stood only his spirit. His spirit was greeted by a dark figure that was hazy and indistinct who told him that he was diving into arcane matters. If he was to continued this path he would have a choice to fight the evil dead or become one of them. But if he became one of them his village would be the first to suffer.
With a wave of a hand the mysterious entity push forth a vision of a future of what may come if he became evil dead. Death and destruction was everywhere he went, wailing of babies could be heard over the cackling of the fires. His entire village was in ruins and he was there laughing maniacally until a hero slew him and he was sucked into the abyss. There were a few afterlife's, it would appear and his was headed down a dark path indeed if he didn't fight.
After the vision had ended he was stuck to the spot he had been standing. A strange and power force was building a body right over his spirit. He could see as his body was put together, it was a disturbing sight but he closed his eyes when it started putting his head on. When he opened his eyes, all was like it was before but he had now a sixth sense that traced a connection to the spiritual realm.
Words in Japanese
Yūrei
are figures in Japanese folklore, analogous to Western legends of ghosts. The name consists of two kanji, 幽 (yū), meaning "faint" or "dim" and 霊 (rei), meaning "soul" or "spirit." Alternative names include 亡霊 (Bōrei), meaning ruined or departed spirit, 死霊 (Shiryō) meaning dead spirit, or the more encompassing 妖怪 (Yōkai) or お化け (Obake).
Like their Chinese and Western counterparts, they are thought to be spirits kept from a peaceful afterlife.
While all Japanese ghosts are called yūrei, within that category there are several specific types of phantom, classified mainly by the manner they died or their reason for returning to Earth.
Onryō:
Vengeful ghosts who come back from purgatory for a wrong done to them during their lifetime
In traditional beliefs of Japan and in literature, onryō (怨霊, literally "vengeful spirit", sometimes rendered "wrathful spirit") refers to a ghost (yūrei) believed capable of causing harm in the world of the living, harming or killing enemies, or even causing natural disasters to exact vengeance to redress the wrongs it received while alive then takes their spirits from their dying bodies.
The term overlaps somewhat with goryō (御霊?), except that in the cult of the goryō, the acting agent need not necessarily be a wrathful spirit
Ubume:
A mother ghost who died in childbirth, or died leaving young children behind. This yūrei returns to care for her children, often bringing them sweets
a Japanese yōkai, appears in folk stories and literature as an old woman or crone, with a child in her arms, imploring the passerby to hold her infant, only to then disappear. As legend has it, the weight of the child increases by degrees, until the bewitched “child” is revealed to be nothing more than a huge rock or boulder. The first version of this sort of tale was related by Urabe Suyetake, servant of Raiko
Goryō:
Vengeful ghosts of the aristocratic class, especially those who were martyred
Funayūrei:
The ghosts of those who died at sea. These ghosts are sometimes depicted as scaly fish-like humanoids and some may even have a form similar to that of a mermaid or merman
Zashiki-warashi:
The ghosts of children, often mischievous rather than dangerous
Earth-bound spirits (Japanese: 地縛霊, hepburn: jibakurei):
Something of a rarity among Yūrei, these spirits do not seek to fulfill an exact purpose and are instead bound to a specific location or situation. Famous examples of this include the famous story of Okiku and the haunting in Ju-On: The Grudge.
Hitodama:
Yūrei are frequently depicted as being accompanied by a pair of floating flames or will o' the wisps (hitodama in Japanese) in eerie colors such as blue, green, or purple. These ghostly flames are separate parts of the ghost rather than independent spirits
Ikiryō
In Japanese folklore, not only the dead are able to manifest their reikon for a haunting. Living creatures possessed by extraordinary jealousy or rage can release their spirit as an ikiryō 生き霊, a living ghost that can enact its will while still alive.
Jikininki (食人鬼 "human-eating ghosts"?)
appear in Lafcadio Hearn's Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things (1904) as corpse-eating spirits. In Japanese Buddhism, jikininki ("human-eating ghosts"; pronounced shokujinki in modern Japanese), are the spirits of greedy, selfish or impious individuals who are cursed after death to seek out and eat human corpses.
