On the outskirts of the Land of Earth lay a small village that seemed almost abandoned. Most of the houses in it were little more then wooden shacks that looked heavily rundown and in need of repair, the bigger houses were literally abandoned with most having a partial collapse of their roof. The walls that surrounded the village were falling apart and had human sized holes ripped out of them. The only large building still occupied was the tavern and contrary to the rest of the village it looked like it was heavily fortified and had a little bit of life to it.
It was nighttime when Zeki arrived at the village and somehow the very weather conspired with the village to give it even more gloomy feeling. The night sky was heavily overcast and lightning could be seen striking through the clouds, yet somehow the full moon was easily visible as if the clouds were intentionally avoiding it. Harsh wind blew through the village, threatening to tear down the more rickety of shacks while causing the tavern's sign to swing wildly while emitting a horrible screeching sound. And the few villagers looked haggard and demoralized, their faces hollow with bags under their eyes. The few questions he asked of them was answered with solemn voices or simply sent the villagers scurrying into the darkness at the attention.
He was finely directed to the tavern enough times to get the hint and soon entered the establishment, "The Gilded Pumpkin". The inside was vastly different from the village outside but not in a good way: tables had been overturned and reinforced to make makeshift barricades, all the windows were boarded up heavily, all the chairs had been broken down to make crude clubs and spears, and the few remaining bottles of strong alcohol were clearly intended to be used as makeshift fire bombs. The few people Zeki could see inside were both better and worse off then the villagers outside; life was still in their eyes and they moved with purpose but many of them were covered in severe wounds.
"Ah, a traveler? All the way out here? I fear you have come the wrong place, laddie. Only death and misery awaits you here." A man behind the single bar of the inn said when he noticed Zeki's arrival. "As you no doubt can see, something has been attacking the village. We have tried to defend ourselves but I fear we cannot last much longer."
"I see. I am a shinobi of Iwa actually. I seem to have come in your time of need and it's my duty to help out the village. Can you tell me more about what has happen?" Zeki replies in a monotone, still gazing at the rest of the patrons.
The bartender paled for a bit at the mention of a shinobi of Iwa, but soon started to tell the story of the village's trouble. About two weeks ago the dead had risen from their graves and attacked the village. At first the undead were not too bad, even in the initial attack, as the undead were mostly made of zombies. However they had not realized that their recently dead would also raise up as undead, nor as stronger undead; facsimiles of humans that feasted on the flesh of the dead. At first the villagers had cheered for these new undead as they thought their friends and family had returned to get vengeance against those that killed them. But when the ghouls finished off the nearby zombies they turned their attention towards the villagers themselves. And it became hell on earth for the villagers.
"Those things are cunning and strong. They climbed over the walls, hide in the shadows for us to let our guard down, struck only when they outnumbered us. And each kill they feasted on only lead to the corpse soon rising up as another one!" The bartender finishes his story quite heated. Zeki watched impassionately before nodding his head in acknowledgement of the bartender's story.
"I have seen the walking dead before, though it was in a place far away from here." Zeki comments, directing his vision towards the ground under their feet before looking back at the bartender. "I will assist you as best I can. Clearing out the majority of these stronger undead should be the first course of action, as they seem to be the biggest threat to the population of the village. Give me a bit to get ready, then I shall head out."
