I woke up early, long before dawn. I was dreaming, or something. I can't remember it quite perfectly. It was some sort of war. There were thousands of us, and somebody was lurking in the shadows, picking us off, dozens at a time. I remembered the look of my favorite cousin's face as a katana emerged from the dark and pierced her body. There was some kind of intense uncertainty, some kind of political turmoil. I'm bothered with these sorts of dreams occasionally; ancestral nightmares for the Uchiha diaspora. They keep me humble, in a way.
But I certainly couldn't get back to sleep. So I went for a walk. Picked up a thing of cigarettes at a convenience store, hoping the buzz would raise me from my morning grogginess, help me function in the face of the dream. I wandered through the city streets in the unending desert night, looking for something to do. I wandered by that taqueria I had been conducting business in front of the other day. By dim lantern light, I saw a bizarre sight.
There were people there! And it clearly wasn't open. I saw men sitting around a table, discussing something fervently. And, with careful observation, I realized one of the men was the same guy from the deal I made the other night. The guy who was trying to rip my guy off. Sure, I couldn't blame him for doing that in the first place – when some nerd shows up with big money in alchemical supply, he's an easy target. But nonetheless, this fucker had shown he has no sense of honor among thieves. I leaned against the back of the taqueria, no doubt looking homeless, as I smoked a cigarette. My hat was pulled over my hair to keep the tangled mess hidden. My jacket was beginning to smell like smoke, and my shirt's top button had broken off as I'd been rolling about in uneasy sleep.
I leaned against the wall and formulated a plan. I was broke as hell. It was time to cash in.Name: no honor among thieves
