Hi there!
I was hoping someone more experienced with the system here could shed some light on an issue I'm having with weapon classification, so to speak. I've been attempting to plan out a character over the past few days am finding myself stumped by this. I've scoured what I could of the different weapons and fighting styles, but haven't managed to find any notes on the subject, although I'm probably looking in the wrong locations. Anyways, on to the details.
I would like my character to fight with a flute, specifically, this one (as per instrument index):
Now aside from the various sound release techniques, I was thinking my character could one day grow into using the flute, or perhaps a sturdier version as a melee weapon as well. I started in the Bojutsu category, but was dismayed as I realized the description in the Staff And Spear Weapons (Overview) lists them at over five feet of length. I abandoned the idea anyhow.
My next thought pertained to my character perhaps using the flute as more of a bokken. I thus moved onto sword styles, and found I quite liked a few of them. Granted I got permission from either the creator of the style or someone of authority, I was sure there'd be no problem with my character learning the techniques of a sword style that did not require direct slashing ad stabbing, such as the blocks, counters and strikes.
My true dilemma occurred when I went to seek out a hand to hand style that would compliment my character, should he unfortunately lose his weapon (that being the flute). I settled upon Musha Shukke Fuu (The Warrior Monk's Way)... because it's just so cool. Unfortunately the restrictions state that I cannot go into Musha Shukke if I'm also a member of a bladed weapons style, for the monks are against weapons that take lives.
So while I would be in a bladed weapon style, I wouldn't be using a bladed weapon. Does this technically abide by the restrictions still? And could I feasibly use a large (3 foot) side blown flute as a bokken, or do I need to settle on a short stick weapon style?
Am I even in the right place to be asking these questions?
Thank you for any help in advance.
