“Hurry! Get to the safe houses! ANBU! Where are the ANBU?!” called out a voice in the sea of panicking villagers.
Wrapped and bare feet alike ran in multiple directions gathering belongings deemed valuable or seeking out company which was irreplaceable. On the faces of the young and old alike was the story of a people used to peace and stability, completely unused to the chaos other more volatile regions in the world faced on a daily basis. Academy students did their best to direct civilians to the bunkers which their teachers had been instructing the location of for several minutes of the day since the Rokudaime’s decree. Despite visible efforts to put brave looks on their faces seeing adults frightened to the point of mindless unhinged them regardless of the little ninja training they had at their disposal. In the tumult their voices were carried on the wind before being tossed in empty back streets or alleyways which were already vacant since the first reports had come into the village regarding the advancement of an army.
The Genin fared only a little better. Older and more sternly trained having graduated from the academy they managed to guide a few frenzied citizens to safety with practiced calm. Many of them would not be fighting in the battle should it come to that instead they would move along with the civilians, hiding with them in the shelters in the secret passages of the jungle until the signal to return was given. A select few were chosen to help aid their village in battle; the most talented Genin within the village. During times of peace these individuals’ battle prowess was both awe-inspiring as it was frightening, but in times of war and strife their gifts were a necessity.
A child with a plump, dirtied face stared dumbly into the heart of the rushing crowd. Clutching onto to a ragged bear the toddler jumped visibly as a gloved hand lay gently upon its shoulder. Staring up, the child would find one of the few village Chuunin beaming down upon him with a foolish grin. Such was the case everywhere. In the haste of terror children were forgotten, families were broken, and the overall structure of a civilized society was banished at the slightest whispering of war.
Staring out of the window of her palanquin, Kaeda huffed irritably as Izumo babbled mindlessly at her side. She had asked the other Council members if they wanted a ride with her, but following her fallout with Raiel Kaguya the rest of the Council treated her like a pariah. Only Izumo, lost in his mad ramblings seemed unbothered by her declining status with the village’s political strata—likely because he was lowest among all the village noble.
“If only they had listened to me. The Council could have prevented all this,” she murmured thoughtfully as the sway of motion moved her about roughly. “That boy and Kaguya have brought chaos to the village and now neither of them can be found! It’s only fitting this village fall because of the actions of self-absorbed ninja…”
Her words were swallowed by the shouts of outside, but she had finished her venting. Now replacing the bitter words of her outrage of her recent treatment was the fear of what would become of the village which she had been born into. If Kusagakure were to truly lose against this foe then life as she knew it would likely be over. As matters stood the village allies were few and the number of capable village ninja were even fewer. She had been preparing for so long to attain political power through motions of grandeur—even arranging an assassination of the Rokudaime that she still wasn’t certain had been successful or not. Now guilt at having a hand in the village’s ill-preparedness made her fall silent. It roomed with the growing worry that the blood of the innocents would run freely through the streets on this day as one of the smaller ninja villages was wiped from the face of the earth.
In her heart, Kaeda prayed that a miracle would take place, but her mind was already convinced that her home was doomed.
