The Gate of Devotion was constructed in the earliest days of Sukuinushi, before the Tower of Contemplation had been built high into the sky in honor of the gods. The first settlers made the gate out of timber and spikes, hoping that it would keep wild animals at bay. Since that time it has evolved considerably and is not at all the same today. Now there is an entire, circular stone wall that encases the city of Sukuinushi. Made out of several thick layers of amber-colored, clay bricks from the desert, the wall surrounding Sukuinushi is an impressive defense. Stretching 100 meters into the sky, it is constantly patrolled and maintained by citizens of the city. The Gate of Devotion is the only public entrance to Sukuinushi, positioned on the north side of the city to let in guests from the rest of the world.
The gate is actually a narrow slit in the wall that surrounds Sukuinushi, with a road leading straight through its clay border. A series of metal bars and spikes can be raised or lowered throughout the gate to stop unwanted guests.
Valerys looked up at the gate. Even though she was wearing a tanktop and shorts, the sun was making her sweat. And the twenty guards in front of the gate weren't helping.
A Savior's Sacred Place had once been affiliated with the Sand Village, and some of the old men still knew where the village was located. Valerys found the gates and was being asked, "Do you intend to harm A Savior's Sacred Place?" "No," Valerys said. It was true. She hadn't even got to look yet.
They gave her a pass, stamped it, and stepped aside. She took a lingering look at the desert behind herself, and Valerys stepped into the stone wall. The other side was sacred.
Valerys walked out of the gate. All of the non-ninja made her nervous, and she was glad to be on the road. She had not been here a day and she was already tired of the religious overtones.
"Well, I can't say I'll miss it much," Valerys said as she was leaving.
LILITH KNEW THAT IT was the indicated city from miles off; at first a dark line on the horizon, the walls of A Savior's Sacred Place loomed higher and higher as he approached, till they swallowed a good portion of the sky. Standing at five feet and three inches - where the walls were hundreds of feet tall - the panda boy (still devoid of ear-hat and gloves) approached the city with his bag slung over his shoulder and his umbrella shielding him from the worst of the heat. He was smiling airily.
There was a line of men standing outside; Lilith wondered if he would need to use his powers to gain entry, but doubted it. She promised we would be revered, but did she lie? The whole setup looked rather austere, to be sure. Lilith halted his pacing upon the sand once within earshot of the guardsmen. Say something rather important-and-congenial-sounding, dear. Make it simple, however. Lilith smiled. The voice inside his head was so smart! He folded up his umbrella and let it lie upon his shoulder.
Selyse entered through the Gate of Devotion wearing a dark-blue military outfit and her butt-bag, which was filled with just a few goods, her blue hair and blue eyes looking calm and collected as she transversed the desert landscape. The guards at the gate looked at her, surprised to see a newcomer to the village as tourism had been scarce lately. Selyse flashed her Sand Village headband to garner their trust, and had met them briefly once before when she had investigated a Temple for them. So she was well liked... Answering all of their questions, Selyse made her way into Sukuinushi traveling through the narrow opening in the Gate.
As she had done what she intended in the city of Sukuinushi, Selyse prepared herself to leave -- gathering all of her equipment and dress ready to leave. As she left the sensors watched her leave, now becoming more acquainted with her appearance, and did not hassle her as she left. Selyse smiled, happy to be gaining their trust.
