While he allowed the fine powder slowly cover the blade, he made sure to hit it a few times in between each layer. Flames erupted from the metal and a hazy blue color danced along the blade and into the fire. It was so beautiful that the Hoshigaki stopped for a brief moment as he just enjoyed the view, but that resulted in the flames dying and the color vanishing. Yet again he had to wake himself up from his fascination, what was he doing? He was more professional than that. So he hurried himself to start hammering again, but for some reason the blue color never came back and the flames less eager. At first he thought that it could have something to do with the heat, that it had cooled down enough for the effect being less effective.
But as he put it back into the fireplace and made it hotter than it had been before, he noticed that it wasn't true, he just couldn't get the effect back. Since he had researched about the process in before hand, he knew that the book didn't hold the answer. But it did however have several pictures of all the stages of the metal, so he had to go there and compare his own to the one in the book. There were several different colors in the metal, so he wasn't quite sure which one he'd be able to compare it with. But then he just decided that he just needed to find the approximate colors in the metal piece. So he made a spectrum of all the colors on a line to make it easier to compare before he moved it over to the sword.
Most of the colors were darker in reality and Emi began to wonder if it was due to the dark room, or if he had ruined the metal. So he tried to light up the room as much as he possibly could, with torches on each and every wall and two surrounding the table. The metal did however not change its color tones, which confirmed it, he had ruined the metal. After a couple of curses, he went back to the book to see if he had any alternative to actually save the precious metal from being unusable. At the end of all the descriptions he found some common flaws, but even though it was about the unrefined version, he saw some things that fitted to his. So he tried the procedure, which was basically to have it in the fire for long enough time to burn away the scraps of dust.
