Man it has been a very long time since I have trained a jutsu. With being so caught up with being Takikage, I barely have any time to myself anymore. I had decided to try putting my Bo Staff to some use today and had scheduled a meeting with a Bojutsu master at seven this morning to begin my training. He was already present by the time I arrived at the Dojo, staff in hand and nerves bubbling around inside. “Nice to see that you are on time, My Lady. Let’s begin your training.” The master said softly, withdrawing his own Bo Staff.
“Today, we will be learning the most basic stance. What is your dominant hand?” He asked, curious. “My right.” I reply, raising an eyebrow. The master smiled and held out his staff in front of his chest. The weapon was held diagonally while his right hand held it beneath, while his left hand was atop. I tilted my head to the side but otherwise said nothing. “Since your right hand is dominant, you are to hold your staff with your right hand beneath the staff. Never put your hand over the staff otherwise it will be incorrect.”
Seemed easy enough. I bought my staff out and held it in front of me. Mirroring the master’s current stance, I held the staff with my right hand sitting over the top of it, near the middle while my left hand held it beneath and a hand’s length away toward the end of the staff. My attention shifted from my own handiwork to the masters, but was disappointed when he was holding his staff with only one hand. He was clearly not in the stance and had wanted me to memorise what he had done. But judging from his expression, I believed to be doing things correctly.
I moved the staff outward experimentally, giving out sharp flicks as if I were striking an imaginary person. I found my movements swift and easy. It even felt comfortable. Twisting the staff around, I bought the tip forward toward the master before yanking it back again, widening my stance my parting my legs. I found that by doing this I was able to swing further out and was able to put more power into the swing too. I also made sure that my hands remained in the correct alignment as instructed.
