Long Lost Landscapes

A soft, warm zephyr danced its way across the soft grass of the hill. Well, as grassy as it gets in sand country. The girl's long hair whipped this way and that with the sudden changes of the breeze. Her storm-colored eyes were shut gently, leaning with her hands behind her head against a large leafy tree. She yawned slightly before opening her eyes and flashing a casual glance across the mid-day horizon.
It had been a while since she was here. At least half a year she suspected. Still, nothing much had changed. The same boulders stood strong in their places, the same mighty tree stood above, casting the same gentle shade it always had. The rays of the sun passed through the leaves as they always did, performing little tricks of light on the ground, dots of brilliant light dancing about like day-time fireflies. The same scratches were left on surrounding rocks and roots, from when she and Moku had always played games with father's kunai's and shurikans. She laughed softly at this thought, they'd been scolded when they were younger, but as they grew they learned, and she remembered the first time they'd both hit their desired targets in unison.
She stood, and looked at the tree, running her hand slowly over the dull carving in the tree. She smiled as memories flodded her mind. Her hand ran over carvings of stars, and hearts, ribbons, dogs and cats, kunai's and wind. How she missed those times. Back when she was young, when she was innocent, when he was still here.

"Ok, I'll be the cat as long as I can have a ribbon." the young girl said, nodding her head as her dark brown curls bobbed up and down. She kneeled on one knee before the tree, and carved in a fairly good cat for a little girl, then carved a ribbon next to it. "But I get to be the dog next time because it always wins and gets all the Ramen and kunais." she complained. "Fine, but I want to be the biggest" the little boy said, moving his brown hair out of his eyes. "You can't be the dog and the biggest!" she said, stomping her foot. Finally they came to an agreement. The cat would be the biggest as long as the dog got to sleep on the roof. After their game, they were called home, laughing. The dog and the cat raced home with broad smiles on their faces.

This young child, now woman, ran her hand once more over the childish dog carving. She looked down at it lovingly, remembering how high up they'd carved it. She laughed at how now it was feet below her. She leaned back against the tree and sighed before letting herself slide down the trunk of the tree. Sitting against the tree she stried to stick her hand in her non-existant pockets. She was wearing her usualy dress hich had no pockets. Oh well. She glanced around again, feeling a hint of loneliness, especially here. She was almost always her with someone. Father or Moku before they had passed away, and more recently Amara and even Akuma. Amara had volunterred to watch after mother today, so Mei was all alone. She sighed and closed her eyes, slightly bored, ears intent for the sound of footfalls.
