Character Depth
Personality:
As a member of the Kedōin Avery was taught from an early age that her personality should be as malleable as her body. Due largely to these teachings she developed a set of mental masks and rigorously trained to allow herself to easily slip out of one and into another at a moment's notice. Her core personality is highly variable and tends to reflect the intentions of whoever she is currently dealing with. She doesn't have a firm grasp on her own emotions so she instead mirrors the emotions of others. If you are excited to meet her she will be all sweetness and light, whereas hostility is met unbridled fury. She rarely shows this side or allows it to effect her actions, but it is always just below the surface.
The primary mask she wears is that of an effervescent young girl that Avery likes to call Bubbles. She smiles a lot and erupts in fits of giggles at the slightest prompting. This side of her is extremely friendly often falling over herself in a rush to greet a new acquaintance. When Avery is wearing the Bubbles mask she is always helpful and kind. This combined with her cute appearance usually wins her the hearts of everyone around her and makes them putty in her hands. Manipulation is the name of the game and she plays it oh so well.
When she decided to go into the medical field Avery developed a crisis persona adequately named Doc. While wearing the Doc mask Avery adopts a more classically masculine affectation. Brusque and headstrong, this personality is based off of the arrogance Avery often witnessed from medical staff. She uses this mask to find the calm center within herself free from the chaotic influence of emotion. Avery strives to use Doc only when it is absolutely necessary so as to condition herself to slip into this mindset at the first sign of emergency.
Her final mask is Mareen, named for her mother. Avery's mother is her link to the Kedōin and the source of her Kekkei Genkai. Unlike Avery, who feels emotions but yet lacks full understanding of them, her mother is a true sociopath caring only for the good of the Kedōin clan. Mareen was the forced result of her mother's influence on Avery, and was largely created as a means of placating the matriarch. It is a seldom used persona only dusted off when dealing with other Kedōin. Perhaps one day Avery will find another use for it, but until then she keeps it hidden at the back of her mind.
Despite her mother's best efforts her father's Li clan demeanor has also managed to worm it's way into Avery's consciousness. Her love of art and it's creation is a rather recent development, but it holds much sway over her decisions. The budding emotions she started to feel as a result of her father's influence are also responsible for her choosing to go into the medical field. To Avery life is art, and there is little more noble than its preservation. What she currently lacks in talent with a brush she makes up for in her devotion to the healer's craft. She hopes to soon be able to paint a beautiful masterpiece with one hand and save people from death with the other.
Appearance:
Avery's natural appearance is the terrifying faceless visage shared by all members of the Kedōin clan. Luckily Avery was spared this form by her mother's in utero meddling. Since she only recently learned her first Kedōin technique she doesn't have the skill to alter her body, and at this point she's come to terms with the way she looks. Especially since she's only seen the mirror of her true form in those moments that her mother dropped the facade. As such, her default appearance is currently her only appearance.
The hair her mother gave her is golden blonde and waist length. It is mostly straight but has an ever-so-slight curl that is a product of its length. She also has a distinctive spit curl just behind her bangs that she's spent quite some time cultivating. The rest of her body is hairless which was a slight oversight on the part of her mother, but she does have thin eyebrows a couple of shades darker than the rest of her substantial locks and jet black eyelashes. Her hair is generally worn down and allowed to move freely with the wind.
To say her eyes are simply brown would be to do them great injustice. In natural light the are reminiscent of the bright tone of polished red oak. While dimly lit areas transform them into pools of inky blackness deeper than the space between the stars. When the sun hits them they glow, shot through with flecks of gold rivaling the clearest gemstones. Their shape is round and their size is large allowing for maximum expression. Whether it be the wide quivering of excitement or the hard squint of incredulity.
Her face is somewhat squared with round cheeks and a sharp chin. While her body is slender but certainly not lacking in lean muscle earned from daily exercise. Since she currently lacks Kedōin abilities she's had to build her strength the old fashioned way. She is of average height and weight for a shinobi her age though. Her skin is fair, but outdoor training has led her to develop the slightest tan. After learning the Warped Visage: Biomaterial Growth technique Avery has started using it daily to alter the colors of her finger and toenails to various shades to match her outfit.
Avery general outfit begins with an over-sized shirt that hangs down to mid-thigh and has the symbol of the Li clan on its back. Over this she wears a sash and a simple cord belt that holds up her butt bag. This belt also allows her shirt to double as a makeshift skirt, and below it is a pair of compression shorts that do little but provide a bit of modesty. Her ensemble is completed by a pair of cloth bracers and standard ninja sandals. Avery also keeps a pair of Sniper Goggles around her forehead for the utility of rapid equipping or keeping her hair back like a headband. Finally, her forehead protector is worn loosely around her neck.
Background:
Avery's existence was planned long before she was actually born. She was to be part of a Kedōin initiative to retrieve the techniques of other clans and someday bring them back to the Tsuki no Kuni to teach the main clan. Her mother, Mareen, was tasked with marrying into the Li clan and immediately set off to Hi no Kuni to accomplish her mission. She first met Avery's father, Jack, in Otafuku Gai wearing the guise of an old man begging for ryo in the street. After this initial scouting Mareen moved to Konohagakure as a refugee fleeing a forest fire which had destroyed a nearby town before the Konoha-nin could extinguish it. Little did they know that the fire was actually started by Mareen and a few other Kedōin clan members for the express purpose of allowing her to infiltrate the hidden village.
Once Mareen was in the town she got herself a job at a local art supply store. It was there that she began the process of seducing Jack mainly by playing hard to get. After nearly two years they had their first date. Four years later they were engaged. Then a year after that was their wedding night which also happened to be the date of Avery's conception. Over the next nine months Mareen would alter Avery's featureless visage little by little in her womb whenever Jack was away on missions. By the time Avery was born Jack still had no idea that Mareen was a ninja, and much less a member of the infamous Kedōin clan.
The early years of Avery's life were a far cry from those experienced by a normal child. Even by the standards of a ninja they would have been considered abnormal. Jack was ANBU, and even with a baby at home he had a job to do. He had petitioned Mareen to quit her job at the art supply store at least until Avery was five. A request that Mareen was all too happy to fulfill. Whenever Jack was away Mareen would play “games” with Avery designed to stunt the child's emotional development and prepare her for the life of subterfuge that came with the Kedōin name.
Jack certainly saw something strange in the child, but Mareen was his ice queen. It had taken him two years to convince her to go out with him after all. Why would her child be any warmer than she? By the age of eight Avery had built her Bubbles persona, and used it almost exclusively both at the ninja academy and at home. She became loving child to an overjoyed father then became a ball of light that could bring a smile to any one of her classmates faces. To Avery this deception became normal, comfortable even.
Then, a few days after her tenth birthday, Avery's life drastically changed. Her father left for another mission and her mother dropped a bombshell. She told Avery that she wasn't like everyone else. Mareen explained the Kedōin to her daughter and revealed her true face. She took extra care to inform Avery of the importance of their mission and how it had to be kept secret from everyone. Even her father. It was a lot for a ten year old to take in, but Avery endured the shock in silence and made her mother proud. Mareen ended the day by telling her daughter that she would begin to teach her Kedōin techniques soon.
The training sessions were brutal but sporadic. Due to the secrecy of the whole affair they had to be scheduled around Jack's missions and Avery's classes. It was slow going but eventually Avery mastered the first jutsu of the Kedōin clan. Not long after this she graduated from the academy with average scores. Another plan carefully orchestrated by her mother. After all, what better way to avoid drawing attention to yourself then to slide by in the middle of your class?
It was after graduation that Jack took the first steps towards teaching Avery the ways of the Li clan. She was a brilliant student but her mother's scheming extended even into her father's lessons, and Avery purposely made mistakes in order to prolong her studies. Even with the delays she soon learned the basics of Suiton and went on to master Gahou Tenrai. After this it was as if a switch was flicked in Avery's brain. Art, and the creation of it, was something she had simply never considered. Under her mother's tutelage she had set aside things like drawing, but her reintroduction to it was like being a child all over again.
Avery could copy things well enough she just didn't have the creative spark she needed to be a true artist. She longed to be able to create beautiful original works like her father, and to do this she had to get in touch with her emotions in a way she never had before. Her mother was a devout follower of the Faceless God of Death and had always taught Avery to keep death in mind, but with the introduction of art into Avery's world she decided that she couldn't adhere to the precepts of the death god. She would instead be a servant of the Many Faced God of Life. It was through this marrying of the teachings of her clans that Avery discovered her true calling. She would be Kedōin and she would be Li, but above both of those she would be a Medical-nin!
