Isamu flew above the streets bounding from roof to roof. He was in full mission gear with his tactical vest and katana at his side. His shuriken kunai were tucked away safely and his communication device was in his ear, tuned to the village's law enforcement channel. He wasn't expecting violence on this mission or anything he couldn't handle himself but he would not be caught unprepared.
He landed softly on the roof across from David's house. The roof was flat with a calf high decorative trim running around the perimeter. There was sand on the roof from the last storm to come through the village. Isamu absorbed the sand and grew to 6'7 before allowing his form to collapse into a pile spread over the roof. Isamu's new form shifted and pushed more sand into the corner overlooking David's house until the pile peaked just above the trim. The Sadojin formed his eyes and began his night's watch.
David's garden was beautiful. The retired guard had certainly put a great deal of effort into it. There were beautiful purple desert lilies contrasting with the iconic red Indian Paintbrush flowers. There was also a smattering of red Ocotillo and Desert Lavender in full bloom. There was a meandering foot path through the garden and it certainly surpassed anything else on the street in terms of grandeur... But then there were the gnomes.
David had replaced many of the missing gnomes just as Isamu had requested. The best ones were creepy, and the worst were downright hideous. Some were displayed prominently in the garden. Isamu noticed that these seemed to be the cheapest gnomes. They still had a "brand new" kind of shine to them. Others were hidden among the flowers. These gnomes were more worn and were only noticeable upon close examination. Many of these gnomes had a weathered look to them. Whoever the artist who sculpted them was he had taken a more artistic license with their features. Some were twisted in ridiculous smiles or frowns. Others had bulging eyes that protruded noticeably. Another garden gnome had its flace split in half, one side contorted in a grimace of pain and the other in a beaming smile.
Isamu was sure they were valuable to someone. Some people are taken by art that most others view as trash and the Sadojin suspected this was the case with the gnomes. There was obviously some subset of gardners for whom the tradition or artistic merits of the gnomes was worth collecting. The gnomes weren't for him though, and they left him strangely unsettled.
It was still early evening and Isamu could see into the front room of David's house were the one armed man was laying with his head in his wife's lap while she read. Isamu was glad to see a man who had given so much in service finding happiness and vowed to give the man peace of mind.
The hours rolled on and the moon climbed higher illuminating the street even as the lights in the houses winked out. David and his wife had long since gone to bed and it seemed unlikely that anything would be happening that night. The creak of a door from somewhere across the street caught the attention of the young Sadojin. It could be a neighbor letting out a cat but something told Isamu to be alert as he peered into the darkness.
