Dessel walked onto one of the many training fields in Sunagakure with a sense of purpose. This area was specifically designed for ranged training and as such had multiple wooden stalls sitting opposite a large berm with targets set up in front of it. There were a few other ninja there training with ranged weapons so Des picked the stall furthest from them so that he could have some privacy to practice his art. He rummaged around in his tactical vest until he found the weapon he was looking for. He would be using a hira shuriken to start because the multiple points would aid in sticking to the target even with sloppy throws.
He had already mastered the overhand throw but that was limiting so today he would be trying to learn how to throw underhanded in order to expand his options. So he dropped into the stance and gripped his star to prepare himself for the throw. Des decided to begin by simply attempting to do the overhand throw upside down. It was a rudimentary approach perhaps, but he hadn't failed to teach himself the other parts of throwing so far so he was sure he would get there. His hand dropped back behind his hip and then quickly flung forward. The shuriken flew way too high managing to completely miss the target and go over the berm.
The young ninja had released the the weapon way to late in the arc. He admonished himself inwardly for making such a rookie mistake. Which was probably unnecessary considering he was a rookie. Nothing to do but try again though. So he grabbed a second shuriken and dropped into his stance again. This throw would cause the weapon to land a few feet short of the target due to over-correction. After another inward scolding he gave it another shot. This third throw hit the target but it was low and to the right of center on the outer ring. His fourth attempt was higher but more over-correction lead to the shuriken striking to the left of center. A few more attempts and he had finally managed to land a star inside the ten ring. He allowed himself a brief moment of satisfaction before taking off down the range to retrieve his shuriken.
With that done he would now attempt to replicate his success with a kunai. The first kunai he threw bounced harmlessly off of the target. Dessel had accidentally applied the same spin to the blade that he had used for the shuriken. That wouldn't have been an issue with the overhand throw as he would just gauge the rotations and throw accordingly. The beauty of the underhand throw though was that you could throw single point weapons directly at your target without the momentum loss that resulted from rotations. He managed to toss the kunai straight on the second throw, and then after a few more he managed to land one in the center.
After retrieving the blades he switched to bo shuriken and started all over again. Some of the kunai had landed a bit off point, but switching to the bo shuriken removed that option from the equation. He would need them to hit dead on if he wanted them to stick. With a few more successful throws and another round of weapon retrieval Des was now ready for the final test, senbon. The lightweight needles would require precision in both force and accuracy to be effective in combat. He decided that he wouldn't quit until he had managed to land a senbon directly in the center of the target. The young ninja achieved this in only twenty-two tosses and even his usually reserved nature couldn't keep the smile from his face.
