The ball of molten fire burned bright in the skies of Kaze no Kuni, drenching the desert sands in a stifling heat. The visual haze was so thick that one couldn't tell one direction from another amongst the dunes, leaving one to fend only with their gut feeling on which way led to civilization or salvation, and which way led to a long slow death from thirst. The heat was indeed so great that even many of the cold-blooded animals such as snakes and lizards hid them against the sun, and more than one tardy beast made an example of the deadly heat just this day with their mummified corpses laying on the sands.
Yet above all this one might spy a streaking silver dot, perhaps seen as a mere mirage, perhaps kept from sight by the heat haze. Yet it was there, and it was Katsu. His silvery scales glinted brightly in the sunlight, his strong wings catching the wild desert wind currents, propelling himself ever Westward, deeper and deeper into the sand dunes. Katsu was out here for a personal mission of discovery, to seek out the rumored abandoned laboratory of Legion, in an effort to take hold of what knowledge may have been left behind.
Now, Katsu was indeed a hardy beast of a humanoid, his Draconic heritage granting him the ability to withstand the deadly heat as if it were a warm spring day, but even he would eventually be brought low by thirst if he was not careful. Which was why Katsu had slowly turned his course towards the North, towards a speck of green visible only from the skies. An oasis, a lush emerald gem of the desert, lay hidden within the folds of a great stand of shattered plateaus. Protected from the sands by these rock formations the center of the Oasis basin was dominated by a large pool of clear water, fine white sand coating the bottom, filtering out any impurities as the pool was supplied from an underground spring. Unexpectedly thick foliage surrounded the pool within the protection of the plateaus; thick strong cacti and even trees not normally seen in a tropical zone, but belonging to the Southern Temperate Zone. Surely any traveler desperate to find water would find this place as a gift from the gods!
As it was even Katsu enjoyed it for its pure beauty. It was obvious no human had ever been here before, not and having returned to civilization to tell about it. The only tracks in the area were that of various animals, and it was obvious that a den of some beast was located in one of the niches far from the water. Winging himself over to the highest section of the plateaus Katsu looked out over the Oasis, finding nothing amiss before leaping forward, out and down into the waters below. Blessed coolness washed over Katsu as he sunk to the very bottom of the pool, at least twelve feet down, and he gulped down some the waters before letting his gills do their work, pulling oxygen from the liquid around him to let him breathe. Sighing deeply Katsu closed his eyes and let his mind wander, a silver glitter deep within the pool, enjoying the respite from his travels, of course they were to eventually be interrupted by...what?
