the battleground - arena stadium, where neutral tournaments are held. 100 meter diameter circle, sheer walls, and hundreds of screaming fans. a 2 meter wide moat runs at the edge of the walls, with an additional meter of sand at its bank. a massive Dome of Force has been set in place to keep the participants within the arena, and to protect the citizenry.
the rules - no first-round attacks or jutsus, 48 hour IIC time. that's it.
Claire Sakurai, the Last Scion of the Sakurai, observed all this through heterochromatic eyes - blue, surrounded with a thin band of green. She pushed her rose-colored hair out of her eyes and shifted her stance so that her right hand was within easy reach of her Coldfire Saber, which was holstered in it's crossbow mode behind her thighs hanging by straps from the utility belt encircling her waist.
The Coldfire Saber was a composite weapon, one that had been assembled from several other items, and at great expense. But it was worth it. It was formed from a standard sized crossbow with a 200 pound draw weight, which had been custom-configured to internalize the mechanisms to maintain a sleek and linear profile, as well as counterbalanced weights to increase the firing stability and a modular design to disassemble easily for storage and cleaning. Additionally, it had been fitted with a pistol grip, red dot sight, crossbow scope with a zooming capability of 5, a removable stock, and a DNA lock to prevent anyone but herself from firing it.
It was also capable of transformation. With a specialized mechanical process parts could fold and unfold in order to reshape the crossbow into the form of a sword and reveal the blade within. This blade mode, which was within the length category of a Long Sword, was the key to the weapon's name, as it was capable of generating both extreme heat and cold, though not at the same time, in order to enhance the weapon's striking power. Due to the position of the blade in crossbow mode, when these mechanisms were triggered they would be able to imbue the same properties to the bolts fired.
She checked the time with the P.I.P.-Boy on her left forearm, which could display data on her vital signs, emit an omnidirectional light, and store data on a multitude of maps. It was also capable of interfacing with anything bearing an I/O port, such as the goggles on her forehead, which had a camera and recording ability as well as a zooming capability of 24, a condition viewing vision, and anti-flash lenses. Both of her wrists were fitted with an ornamental bracelet which appeared to only be jewelery but in fact concealed 57 senbon needles within.
From her right hip hung the ancestral blade of the Sakurai, the Itosen, and on her left thigh, within easy reach, was attached her sidearm - a pistol crossbow with a 30 pound draw weight that had also been internalized, stabilized, and modulated, though it was only outfitted with a pistol grip and red dot sight.
Each of her llamelar-styled greaves was outfitted with a piston enhancement and a shock enhancement, and the pockets of her combat fatigue pants were loaded down with extra magazines for her weapons as well as a walkie-talkie, a lensatic compass, and a dungeoneer's compass.
The Coldfire Saber was currently loaded with a magazine carrying 40 basic broad head bolts with razor blade fletching and 10 bolts with Togiri-Ya Electro arrowheads, basic superheated shafts, and razor blade spinning fletching. The pistol crossbow was equipped with a magazine carrying 10 basic broadhead bolts with razor blade fletching and 5 nonlethal blunt-headed bolts with razor blade fletching. The single spare pistol magazine was set with 3 bolts with suction-headed chaff arrowheads, basic screaming shafts, and razor blade spinning fletching, as well as 12 bolts with watakusi boreworm arrowheads, basic force-projection shafts, and razor blade spinning fletching. The two spare standard magazines both had identical loadouts of 30 broadhead bolts with razor blade fletching and 20 togiri-ya electro arrowhead bolts, basic superheated shafts, and razor blade spinning fletching.
Hanging crossways from the utility belt at her waist were two more utility belts crossing diagonally over her groin, as well as a small pouch on each side - one for her money, and one containing 10 soldier pills and 10 saddilia nuts. Each belt was loaded with several grenades, as well as some other things in the one at her waist. The waist-belt carried 12 blood clot pills and 5 thermal capsules, 1 chaff grenade, 5 incendiary grenades, 3 stun grenades, and 3 fragmentation grenades. The other to carried 3 smoke grenades each,as well as 5 Ice Elemental grenades and 2 goo grenades in one and 5 Lightning Elemental grenades and 2 concussion grenades in the other.
Additionally, at the small of her back was a mid-sized "but bag", carrying a piece of flint, an 8-inch length flashlight, 2 knives, 15 blank holodisks, 2 cases of "kaen no gikami", and 1 sting grenade.
Claire stared across the field. Her match should be starting soon. Where was her opponent?
