Character Depth
Personality: Rabimaru is known for his very serious demeanor, and is very rarely seen with a smile on his face. He can sometimes appear emotionally detached or totally unsympathetic, to the point of nearly being antisocial in his behavior. He also reacts with anger and powerful frustration to those that he sees as cowardly or self-pitying. Despite these qualities, he will often attempt to help those in need, no matter their circumstances. He does not cry off at the first sign of trouble, but he knows when he is outmatched and is not afraid to run from a match he can't win in order to save others at some other time. Rabimaru is not really the type to sacrifice himself in a blaze of glory if he doesn't think his death will make a difference.
He has called himself unimaginative in the past, and considers his mind very practical, and won't often look for other meanings or intentions behind what he perceives. In fact, Rabimaru is quite intelligent and perceptive, but not at all creative. He doesn't often plan very much, and will prefer a good starting point, good instincts, good training, and good luck to get him through tough situations. This isn't to say that he doesn't come up with a good plan and a strategy to see him through tough spots; he just doesn't always stick to the plan, if it appears that said plan isn't working smoothly enough for his liking. This plan-abandoning trait is most typically displayed when he is by himself, however; if someone else has made a plan that relies on his success, he will do his best to ensure that the plan succeeds. Rabimaru always places the mission first when others rely on him to perform.
The man isn't known for his patience, especially during speeches or in stressful situations. He will often hurry a speaker along or interrupt them if he becomes too impatient. It is also well-known that he does not have a sense of humor; although he does enjoy riddles, he rarely jokes and is quite irritated if others try for "foolishness". He's not really one for small talk and especially not for long drawn-out monologues or speeches about well-meaning intentions. He may let an opponent speak only to buy time or in order to surprise an opponent by attacking while they're busy talking.
It can be somewhat difficult to earn his trust, even if a person shares his allegiance to the Village of Grass. Once earned, however, his trust is freely given. The genin is also very protective, to the point of near-suicide to protect those he considers part of his family. He is fiercely loyal to his village, his kage, his people, his clan, his team, and himself, in that order.
In combat, Rabimaru employs a method of fighting somewhat common among ninja from an earlier time; he obscures himself, attacks from afar, and does his best to ensure that he is not found out. He uses misdirection, redirection, and confusion to make his foes stop fighting against him. If they cannot be forced to stop fighting, he must subdue them by force or kill them. Rabimaru does not attack out in the open, but neither does he fight or kill for pleasure.
Appearance: Rabimaru's silky blonde hair is somewhat long for man's, reaching down to the nape of his neck when up in a pony tail, which is his typical style, and reaching down to his shoulder blades when his hair is let down. He typically wears a hood over his head to completely cover the shock of his bright hair color. His eyes are a clear, bright blue, revealing his Yamanaka heritage. His triangular face has a scruffy appearance due to the blonde facial hair covering his cheeks, chin, and upper lip, and would be considered handsome despite the fact that he constantly has a serious look etched onto his face and is quite prone to squinting. His lips are rather average in size and shape, somewhat lacking in laugh lines, as he is not prone to laughter or smiling. His body is similarly unmarred, lacking in body acne and most body hair. His body type is somewhat lithe, clearly made to be more nimble, quick, and durable than actually strong. One exception are his fingers, hands, and forearms, which have been honed to become bunched muscle like braided steel wire from his practice with a crossbow.
Rabimaru typically wears simple clothing of earth colors around the village, including a well-worn, long-sleeved brown leather jacket, opened for air flow to reveal a light green shirt underneath. His legs are covered by long tan pants, leading down to plain brown ninja boots that would normally leave the toes exposed, but in this case, he is also wearing plain black tabi boots. Though his apparel seems rather spartan, there is one bit of jewelry that he wears at all times; a plain silver chain necklace with the Yamanaka Clan symbol hanging from it, which is hidden beneath his clothing when he is on business, but will be out on top of his shirt when he is off-duty. In addition, the back of his jacket bears the Kasuta Clan's smoke symbol, proudly displaying his somewhat mixed heritage.
When Rabimaru is out of the village or on business, he will typically put on his combat gear: his brown jacket is closed up and his dark green tactical vest is worn over it, with his gas mask covering his mouth and nose entirely. He wears his goggles, though the zoom lenses are typically set to their lowest possible setting, allowing him to see as normally as one can while wearing goggles. In addition, he'll often be wearing his dark green full-length cloak and accompanying hood, keeping the cloak closed around his body and the hood drawn above his head if he feels the situation calls for it. His jewelry is typically removed and placed in his home, but in times of emergency, he will place it under his clothing to keep his ties to the clan hidden. Rabimaru will also wear his crossbow in a leather holster over one shoulder, giving him easy access to it if the weapon is not already in his hands. At his waist is his machete in its scabbard, on his left side. Oddly enough, Rabimaru is actually left-handed, and draws the machete in the same hand.
Background: Rabimaru Yamanaka's conception and birth were not considered typical for his family. His mother, a member of the Yamanaka Clan that was always rebelling against tradition, had fallen in love with a travelling member of the Leaf Village that had only been in the Hidden Grass Village visiting relatives. Although their pairing was quick, the Yamanaka woman and the older man conceived one child. Rabimaru's grandparents, distraught that their child had chosen to be with someone they had not known about and whom was not even from the same village, nevertheless forgave the woman and accepted their new grandson into the family. Of course, this didn't stop the gossip from everyone else in the clan. Rabimaru and his mother quickly became outcasts within the clan, and the young boy grew up with few friends. He always seemed to be on the sidelines, being allowed to observe from afar, but not always being socially accepted when he tried to take part. Despite the social awkwardness that stemmed from his being an outsider among his own extended family, Rabimaru became friends with others outside his clan, including one older ninja that he could consider like an older brother. Of course, as a child, he always admired what the older man did, even taking an interest in the pipe that he would occasionally puff on to make little clouds of black smoke. It was this brother figure that started teaching Rabimaru how to hunt, how to think tactically, and, as he got older, how his family was the most important thing in his life. The boy didn't know it, but he was actually being trained twice as much as the others in his clan; he learned some of the basics of the mind techniques from the Yamanaka Clan, then he learned about hunting and stalking and tracking from the ninja outside his clan.
As he came of age, his mother gave him his father's jacket, which he had given her on his last day in the Grass Village. Though Rabimaru had never met the man, he accepted the gift and, after removing the old Leaf symbol, showed it to his oldest friend and mentor. The man, now middle-aged, had suggested that the teenager leave the jacket with him for a time. When it had been returned to him, it now had the Kasutā Clan's smoke symbol on its back. When Rabimaru had asked the old man about it, the balding man told him that it was the sign of his clan, and from that point on, he would be part of that clan, as well as the Yamanaka Clan. And so the man that taught him how to hunt also taught him how to smoke; Rabimaru Yamanaka became the culmination of two very different clans.
Rabimaru's training turned out to be quite helpful in the Ninja Academy. His tactical understanding and his ability to make himself unseen, unheard, and unnoticed were what most accelerated him through his schooling. Even his philosophical and moral justifications made the instructors somewhat impressed; the teenager was fiercly loyal not only to his clan, but to the people of the vllage as well. The other members of his clan, however, still could not accept him as one of them, as most of his skills were things taught outside of the clan itself. Rabimaru was devastated and began to have doubts about how he felt about the clan that had tried so hard to ostracize him despite his words and actions. These doubts grew in the teenager's mind until he received a letter one day, addressed to him from his old mentor.
That letter was filled with secrets and answers: his mentor had been a member of the Kusagakure ANBU, one of the upper echelons in the Falcons team. The letter detailed the middle-aged man's life from when he'd been a young boy to his own middle age. Rabimaru's mentor had also been pushed away by his original clan, as his illegitimacy made him untrustworthy in their eyes. At a young age, the mentor had suffered and fought with himself about what his family even meant to him and how badly he wanted to exact revenge on the ones that had hurt him the most, especially his own parents. But one day, the mentor had met the Kusakage face to face. Unable to keep his inner turmoil in check, he had told the Kusakage everything, and the leader of the village had become the boy's confidant. The letter said that when he'd finished, the Kusakage had told him that the clan was not his family if they treated him that way; the entire village was his family now, and the Kusakage was his father. Upon finishing the letter, Rabimaru became more determined than ever to earn the respect of his clan. After all, they had not completely abandoned him yet. But there was still one mystery to be solved: why had the teenager's mentor given him such well-guarded information?
With a little bit of tracking, Rabimaru had his answer. The letter, it turned out, had been set to be delivered some five years ago upon the death of the mentor. The details of the death were unclear, as it was apparently ANBU business. All Rabimaru was allowed to know was that the mentor had died outside of the Land of Grass, and that his opponent was still alive and out there, somewhere. On that day, Rabimaru became totally focused on one thing: finding his older brother's killer and bringing him to justice.
