[The Librarian]

{Description}

Bara Ken makes his home in a shack off the beaten track in the village. The shack is in the middle of a small field of unkempt grass. Ken has no patience for lawn maintenance. Not much foot traffic, and easy to defend. A rather damaged scarecrow sits out front, singed from Fire Release practice. It’s not the best place: inside is only a ragged futon, a small cupboard and an ice box that holds his food and cold drinks.

It’s not much, but its home.

It was early morning. The sun had only just risen, rays of morning light seeping through the cracks in the dilapidated shack that Bara Ken called his home. He enjoyed the privacy of living on the outskirts of the village: it meant he didn’t have to be so paranoid all the time. Yawning and reaching for a canned drink from the ice box, Ken stood and ran a hand through his hair. He’d neglected his training as of late, preferring to read and study up on his weapons. Plus, he’d not been assigned any missions yet. He’d have to check in at the tower and take the initiative.

But not before he had some Ninjutsu under his belt. And he wasn’t about to start training before his morning run. Quickly dressing and covering his face with his mask. It was a fairly warm morning, so he left his cloak inside. But as a precaution, he belted Bara no Ken to his back. Ken began to stretch his muscles: no sense to hurt himself. After a few minutes, Ken was sufficiently warmed up and went for his morning jog.

Running was one of the few things about his conditioning that Ken didn’t take issue with. While he was trapped in Blackdraft, they would make him run circles around their huge training area. It always managed to clear his head. After a few minutes, Ken felt the familiar burn in his muscles, the labouring of his lungs.

In hindsight, wearing a mask while running was probably not a good idea.

After about half an hour of jogging through the streets and scaring a group of old ladies (that shouldn’t have been as satisfying as it was), Ken walked back to his shack, a bottle of water in his hand. This was going to be a productive day, he could feel it. Now, to get some Ninjutsu under his belt.

Fire Style: Fire Bolt Technique

Skill: Ninjutsu 

Effect: Shoots a very small ball of fire, no larger than a foot in diameter, towards a target. 

Special: Rat, Ram, Tiger, extension of one hand 

Drawback: When the seals are over, the user extends their hands, shooting the ball of fire from their fingertips, which after repeated use (3 or more times), causes singeing which can slow down the speed of which a user can perform handseals or other finger movements. 

Description: The user performs the handseals, converting chakra within the hands into heat energy. The hands are then pointed towards a target and a small bolt of fire, no larger than a foot in diameter, leaves the hand and flies rapidly towards the opponent.

Ken stretched and faced his scarecrow. It was time to work on his Fire Release training. Ken had read a scroll on several techniques, and thanks to his eidetic memory he was able to recall the details of a particular technique.

“Fire Bolt,” Ken said out loud, not to anyone in particular, “A small ball of fire that is shot at an opponent. The user performs the rat, ram and tiger hand signs and channels fire chakra into one hand. Overuse of the technique can cause burns. Well, no shit.” Obvious warnings aside, the technique would be a useful one until he learnt something more powerful.

Ken reached out for the familiar energy in his core. Ken still wasn’t adept at drawing on chakra yet, but he remembered the familiar burning feeling of his fire chakra. Tapping into that feeling, Ken let the energy flow around his body, bringing his hands together. Moving through the hand signs as rapidly as possible, Ken extended a hand.

“Fire Style: Fire Bolt Jutsu!” Ken said loudly, letting the chakra flow into his outstretched hand. There was a spark and a puff of smoke, but no burst of flame. That was disappointing. But, no sense resting: Ken gathered his chakra again, drawing out the energy and letting it flow around his body.

Moving through the hand signs, Ken outstretched a hand again and poured the chakra more forcefully this time. Without crying out an attack name, Ken released the chakra, and was rewarded with fire. But it simply combusted with the air instead of shooting out and set Ken’s hand on fire. After much screaming and panicking, ending with Ken shoving his hand in his ice box. That was going to be a thing.

The burns weren’t bad, more like if you ran your hand under hot water for a while rather than sticking it into a fire. It hurt, but it wasn’t going to impede him too much. And now, he knew what not to do. Too much chakra made the fire combust too soon. Letting the chakra trickle in produced nothing.

Armed with that information, Ken gathered his chakra again and brought his hands together, wincing as his hands hurt. Forming the hand signs as fast as possible now his hand was burnt, Ken extended his opposite hand and directed the energy flow, careful not to pump too much chakra into the technique. This time, Ken was rewarded: a small ball of fire, barely a foot across, shot out and missed his scarecrow by an inch. Ken whooped and fist pumped the air.

The technique wasn’t tough, but it would be useful, at least for now. Ken hesitated, unsure if he should move on or continue practicing. Might be worth perfecting his aim.

Katon - Goukakyuu no Jutsu (Great Fireball Technique)

Skill: NinJutsu

Effect: The user is capable of performing a few handseals in which gives them the capability of blowing a large body of fire in size of a large sphere that has great fire proportions and explosive capabilities.

Special: "Handseals"

Drawback: Depending on the Rank, is dependent on how strong or how much the user is capable of doing with the Goukakyuu no Jutsu.

Description: The user quickly performs a few handseals. The user then places the hand over their mouth creating a small like circle. This technique in turn is then to help the user control the great flame. The use then blows out and creates a large fireball that twice the size of a normal human body. When the "C" Rank version is first learned the user is only capable of blowing out the Great Fireball that is cannot be moved or go anywhere else. This also means that the technique does not explode in a fiery explosion, but burns greatly to anyone that is caught within the technique. When the user learns the "B" Rank version then the user is capable blowing the Great Fireball into the distance, sending it away from the use it to hurl towards the very opponent. This technique is only capable of going into a straight line and this is capable of having the size three times the size of a human body. This technique when launched at an opponent then becomes dangerous because at this point the technique can explode causing damage that is even more devastating.

Ken shrugged, deciding that the fire ball was going to be as good as it was going to be, moved on. Metaphorically diving into his memory, Ken picked out another, much more powerful technique. It stuck out in his head because it was the signature technique of the Uchiha Clan, who was now a part of him on the genetic level. At least to a point.

Digressing from his mental tangent, Ken went over what he knew about the technique. He knew that the technique at its full power could cause a massive explosion and was about the size of a small sun. But the lower scaled version that was more his speed was just a stationary orb of flames. Fairly useful, and something that he could use more effectively than anything else in his current arsenal of some flashy sword moves and a tiny ball of fire he could shoot at people.

Stepping away from his shack, so it wouldn’t catch fire, Ken faced the open field nearby and brought his hands together, taking a deep breath. Tapping into his chakra, letting that energy flow through his body, Ken moved through a quick string of hand signs to focus the technique and quickly moved his right hand over his mouth in a small circle. Letting the chakra mix with the air in his lungs, Ken exhaled and let the air and chakra out of his body. There was a small spark and the chakra combusted, and Ken suddenly remembered that his mask was still on his face.

Thankfully the burst of flame died quickly once he severed the chakra connection, but it was still a little hot on his face. Ken would have to make a mask that left the lower part of his face uncovered if he planned on using this technique in the field.

But for now, after a quick survey of the area, Ken took his mask off and started again. Gathering a sizable amount of chakra, Ken brought his hands together and took another deep breath. The energy and the air in his lungs mixed and Ken moved through the hand seal string as fast as possible, before moving his hand to his mouth and exhaling the technique. A small spark combusted the chakra, but it was only a pathetic stream of flame a child could have batted away like a birthday candle.

There was no point in getting angry. As much as Ken hated to admit it, Ninjutsu was not one of his strong points right now. He’d only barely gotten the Fire Bolt technique to work. This was orders of magnitude greater than that. This wasn’t going to be something he got the hang of in the next ten minutes.

So, Ken decided he’d give it one more try to make something happen, then get something to eat and let his chakra replenish so he didn’t pass out and die. That wouldn’t be any good to anyone.

Once again, Ken gathered his chakra and took a deep breath. Skipping the praying gesture, Ken simply began moving his hands through hand signs, fingers a blurry of motion. Moving a hand to around his mouth, Ken exhaled and let the chakra laced breath mix with the air around him. But there was barely enough chakra to combust this time, and all Ken was rewarded with was a flash of flame before his chakra fizzled out.

“That’s it,” Ken said, throwing his hands up in the air before headed to his shack, “Time to eat.”

After a quick meal and recovering his chakra, Ken stepped back out onto the field. Being careful not to put his mask back on, Ken closed his eyes and visualised a burning fireball in front of him. Tapping into his chakra, Ken brought his hands together and quickly moved through the hand signs. Forming a circle around his mouth, Ken exhaled and mixed the air with his combustible chakra. The chakra sparked and caught alight, forming a small ball of fire in the air. The chakra drain was enormous, and Ken almost passed out from it. The technique was C-Ranked after all, Ken didn’t expect it to be easy.

After swaying on the spot for a second, Ken tapped back into his chakra and drew it up, letting it saturate his body. Taking a big breath and bringing his hands together, Ken competed the circuit around his body for his chakra. Moving through the hand signs, Ken moved his hand over his mouth and exhaled, unleashing a torrent of flame. The fire expanded into a ball the size of a human being. Almost perfectly round too, and the chakra drain was still immense. But the ball of flame stayed in place and didn’t falter until Ken began to lose more chakra than was practical. Breathing heavily, Ken collapsed onto the ground.

As he lay there, staring at the clouds that drifted lazily over the sky, Ken reviewed where he stood so far. The technique kept draining his chakra too fast: he’d have to manage that and still keep the power of the technique. And from what he knew of this level of the technique, he was still about halfway through perfecting the technique. Ken sometimes wished the experiments that had changed him had worked, but then he’d probably have been brainwashed and turned into a slave.

That was getting off track: Ken had a habit of that. The point was that he still hadn’t gotten the hang of the technique. But it was still effective, and if he perfected it soon, he’d be able to move on to the next thing. But he still needed to double the size of the technique and maintain it for longer than a few seconds. But for now, Ken decided that it was the perfect time to nap and recover his chakra. He didn’t have any secret chakra reserves to draw on, so rest was his only method to regain his lost energy.

Ken’s eyes snapped open, and he stood, ready to continue his training.

Standing ready, Ken brought his hands together and gathered his chakra, letting it slowly trickle into his lungs and mixing with his breath. Now, as he moved through the hand signs, Ken focused and as he exhaled, and as the fire began to form, Ken began channelling his chakra into the growing fireball.

Now was the real test. Ken had to regulate his breath and feed the fire with chakra at the same time. Allowing some more chakra into the technique, Ken expanded the fireball to just a bit off of the final size. But he ran out of breath before he could finish the expansion of the technique, and the flames petered out. Ken took several deep breaths, getting some oxygen into his blood before attempting to go again.

After igniting another fireball, Ken slowly applied his breath to the fire as he fed it chakra. The fireball expanded to the right size, and promptly burnt itself out from a lack of extra fuel from Ken’s breath. This was becoming tedious, and Ken was becoming frustrated. This was stupid: he couldn’t maintain the technique for that long, either with his chakra or his breath.

It hit Ken that maybe that was the point. He wasn’t meant to maintain it. It was a flashy, powerful move that was meant to simply burn hot for a few seconds. It wasn’t meant to be a wall of flame.

Gathering his chakra again, Ken brought his hands together to form the hand signs of the technique. Quickly moving through them and forming the circle around his mouth, Ken poured the chakra into his lungs and pushed his breath out and kept the exhalation steady. The chakra combusted into a beautifully realised fireball of awesome. The fireball burned for a few seconds, then evaporated. Ken would have celebrated his dominance over fire, but he didn’t aim the ball up and had started a small grass fire.

Several minutes of emphatically stomping on the ground and attempting to put out the fire left a small circle of burnt grass. But Ken felt confident he had been successful in using the jutsu. But there was always room for improvement.

After successfully making sure he hadn’t started a fire somewhere else, Ken decided to widen his skillset. He’d heard of people with multiple element releases and had never found out what his real one would have been. Stupid secret experiments messing with his body. Ken wasn’t sure what his actual release would even be. According to one of his academy teachers, it was rare for any student to find out before they hit Chuunin level. That didn’t seem to stop almost everyone Ken had heard of throwing elemental jutsu out like candy.

His teacher had said anyone wanting to find out had a few ways to find out. There were some items that apparently could detect it, but the simplest way was to simply pick one and attempt to learn it like any other jutsu. Ken didn’t have that the sort of time to sort through elements and pick one he liked. So he decided on Wind. It could partner with Fire, and if Blackdraft ever came after him he needed to call on some serious damage. Other people might have started their training by trying to make hurricanes or something.

Instead, Ken decided to meditate, and see what happened. Ken crossed his legs on the ground and closed his eyes. Tapping into his chakra coil, Ken let the energy flow around his body. Ken imagined the wind, everything from the gentle breath of wind on the leaves to the violent rage of a storm kicking up. The chakra in his body responded eagerly, whipping through his chakra coil. Ken held his pose, but he began to let the chakra leak into the air.

The chakra began to agitate the air around him, and Ken did his best to direct it. The chakra swirled around him, flattening grass and kicking up dust and ash from his Fire release training. The chakra drain began to tax his body, but Ken kept the pressure up. The wind began to get violent, and Ken tried to stop it. Really, it wasn’t like he wanted something interesting to happen.

Unfortunately, life does not work that way. What actually happened was that the chakra did something totally unexpected and became a chakra powered wind dragon. That decided it didn’t want to attack the part of the village Ken lived in and instead decided it wanted a piece of Ken.

“Of COURSE, I made a chakra powered Wind dragon!” Ken said as he got up and dodged the dragon’s maw. “Why WOULDN’T I make a chakra powered Wind dragon?” This was going to be a looooooong training session.

How stopping a Wind-Chakra powered dragon was going to help him in training Ken had no idea, but it was still about to eat his face, so Ken gathered his chakra and let out a burst of wind chakra. It was still hard to control, but the sudden burst of wind got him out of the way as the dragon swept down and snapped at him. The blast of wind rocketed Ken up several metres in the air, making him both incredibly nauseous and giving him something to try to help him master this release.

Ken used the training from the academy to push the wind chakra out of his feet to keep him in the air. The focus was thready, making Ken wobble in the air, but he kept there. The chakra control was hard to maintain, but the steady wind would be enough to make sure the dragon didn’t get distracted by anyone on the ground. After a few seconds, the control stabilised, and Ken focused on the dragon.

The dragon, somehow not burning the chakra inside itself out, was a serpentine creature, spikes and fangs probably sharpened by chakra. Ken realised this meant he could probably nail mastering the actual dragon technique that seemed to be a part of so many Ninjutsu disciplines. But now was not the time for planning ahead, now was the time to fight a dragon made of wind. That officially hits the top ten of strange things Ken has had to do, only slightly below the incident that involved a burning clown, a cow and a midget.

The dragon attacked, and Ken made his move. Pushing wind chakra out of his palms, he grabbed hold of the dragon and forced his chakra into it, fusing the dragon’s chakra with his own. The dragon roared and bucked, trying to shake him off. Ken was not used to this sort of thing. But he focused his chakra and took control of the wind dragon, trying to make it calm down and not be angry.

It didn’t.

The dragon grew with power and intensity, becoming a veritable toothy cyclone of violent winds and shook Ken off, making him fall to the ground. Ken screamed, but he brought his hands together and focused his wind chakra again, creating a cushion of air for him to land on instead of hitting the ground from several metres up. The cushion did its job, it still drove the breath out of Ken’s lungs, but it stopped him from dying, so that was a plus.

Ken struggled to his feet and looked at the dragon, now circling above him. Ken succeeded in one thing: the dragon would definitely not be going against anyone else in the village.

It was now one hundred percent focused on Ken.

The dragon, somehow sentient or at least instinctive, focused its attention on Ken, who was breathing heavily. He didn’t really have much chakra left, and he had to stop this dragon.

So, Ken decided that he needed something to fight a dragon. Ken loved stories, so he picked one of his favourites from classical mythology. Ken called on his chakra and brought his hands together. The wind chakra came easily now: some switch must have been thrown in his head. Ken brought the chakra into the air below him and began to shape it. Using the power of his memory, Ken shaped himself a bird – a phoenix-shaped bird of wind just as huge as the dragon, totally controlled by Ken’s chakra and his will.

The dragon roared and charged, and Ken used the power of his chakra to make the phoenix cry out and dodge the shot. Now was the hard part: using the wind chakra to control the phoenix to fight the dragon, talons against fangs, Ken brought some to bear on the dragon itself and sent a tornado at it. Not a particularly strong one, but one strong enough to throw it off balance and let the phoenix sink its beak into the dragon.

Ken jumped off of the phoenix and used his wind chakra to land on the dragon’s back. The phoenix kept the dragon pinned while Ken worked. He needed to bring the dragon under control, and by controlling the phoenix at the same time, he was able to use his wind chakra to calm the dragon down and finally bring it under his control. Ken used his wind chakra to ride the dragon down, and both dragon and phoenix alighted on the ground.

Ken dissipated the both of them with a wave of his hand. The wind died down and the creatures vanished, and Ken promptly collapsed on the ground.

“I’m going to take the longest nap,” Ken said, “And then, I’m going to eat so much food.”

After awakening from his nap, Ken donned his mask and cloak and belted his sword to his side, where it would be hidden by the cloak. Ken needed food, and he needed lots of it. His chakra coil was so drained that if he tried to do something now, it would probably cause his insides to liquefy or something.

Plus, making a dragon out of wind accidentally is not something Ken thought he could follow up straight away. Anyone watching probably thought that would be awesome. Or ridiculous. Or ridiculously awesome.

At any rate, Ken wandered down the streets of his neighbourhood, looking for somewhere to eat.
