Beneath the many-hued light of late afternoon as it slowly progressed into night, a sea of elaborate color surges through Vorrecht, the city of Revelry. An inescapable, communal clamor of string instrumentation, upbeat percussion, various wind instruments and loud singing rings throughout. The intoxicating aroma of strong perfumes and greasy street cooking permeates the festivities, compounding the already substantial heat of the climate and closely-packed crowds.
Civilians must stand to either side of the main street as gargantuan floats roll west to east, brilliant lights highlighting their various colors. The performers that march between and even adorn these giant creations are just as eye-catching in and of themselves, members of both genders seemingly engaged in a competition to be as scant with concealing their toned, bronzed Ránian bodies as possible, though the garments they did wear were oft adorned with glistening jewels, beads and sequins and blossomed with striking feathers. Many men and women alike forgo concealment altogether, opting for costumes which instead enhance and accentuate their physical assets rather than covering them.
Many civilian guests took the liberty of dressing in an equally wanton fashion, and a good many of them were also drunk on the ample amounts of alcohol being dispensed by joyous, glass-toting performers. It seemed that much of the food and drink being served in the packed kiosks of the Gourmand's Court was being distributed either free or cheaply, with only the highest caliber of delicacies still commanding extreme price tags. The air of excitement and mind-addling scents and substances combined even led a few people into public displays of amorousness, though so far it had yet to devolve into outright debauchery.
Though a familiar affair for the locals, this year one of the City of Revelry's many elaborate festivals paid host not only to throngs of tourists to drain of all their funds through various means, but was also hosting the annual Chuunin Exams. Though due to its exclusive and secretive nature this fact lost on almost all civilians present, it was difficult to miss the conspicuous number of shinobi dotted about the place, headbands gleaming their allegiance. These were of course not Genin participants, but rather trusted Jonin sent by each village in order to help keep the peace. If one were to follow the brimming crowds along the main road to the halfway point, the road would split to the northeast and southwest.
The northern path was winding, but bore little of relative interest until reaching a barren area that was the industrial sector, which was home to various factories, foundries, and warehouses. As it was a huge amount of space without much to destroy and with few if any prying eyes, it was perfect place for some last-minute training should any feel it necessary.
If one followed the southern path, it would lead beyond a small but odd monument to what appeared to those familiar with monsters to be a Cactus Lurker. Past the Lurker Monument and up a steep incline the path would split yet again, one way leading to the west, just south of the docks, and another to the east. Taking the west path would find walls of stone rising before them to narrow the path through the gaping maw of a tunnel, the other side of which opened into a semi-round space beaten bare by the constant presence of trampling feet. Here there was little more than a couple small stalls selling black market and alchemical goods for exorbitant prices flanking the main attraction of the sector - the enormous Arena of Death, which had been dug deep into the ground. Fighters would proceed through the large main gate down a long and shallow ramp. Spectators would have to ascend via staircase into the stands where combatants were cheered and jeered at as they fought vicious beasts, mechanical contraptions, and even each other upon the dirt square below.
Taking the eastern road past its musician-lined curve, a tourist would soon find themselves in a massive "square" - though it was circular in shape - which paid home to the great statue of the city's goat-horned God of Merriment. This district was one of rest, faith, magic, and augury, encircled by inns, religious establishments, and purveyors of holistic merchandise. To the east, past the huge cold-iron gates, lay a courtyard overshadowed by the Town Hall, which served also as the Patron's residence and could be compared not unfavorably to a castle.
Entry by the Genin occurred via the western docks, where a giant wire-frame mouth was ringed with a neon welcome. It was here that stalls and vendors were most abound, extending far to the north and south, a veritable marketplace. Unusually, this year there were a much greater variety of merchants. Food and souvenirs were commonplace, but there were enough weapon stalls to supply an army, among other equipment and substances that would not typically be required by those whose life did not continue or end based on combat prowess.
Amid these more nefarious, if still brightly colored stalls, was a highly conspicuous board bearing the ten marks of each Hidden Village and littered with papers bearing uniform type that could not be read from a distance, though curiously none of the general citizens paid it so much as a second thought. A genjutsu perhaps? One designed to conceal the presence of the exams? That, or the woman manning it was simply too distracting. She wore no plate of allegiance on her body, in fact wearing almost nothing at all, though her costume was clearly intended to be reminiscent of some kind of great chicken the color of the setting sun. The costume's glorious plumage was cut such that her entire torso was without girding, but passersby hardly noticed that given her gorgeous features and dusky skin made it difficult for them to tear their eyes from her face. Back-length hair like a river of chocolate swayed as she pranced to the omnipresent music, dark eyes sparkling with mischief as she periodically concealed herself behind her colorful arm wings.
"Hey, hi there~" She would chirp to any prospective Chuunin she saw, beckoning them over. "If you're here for the Exams, you're going to need to fill out one of these here papers. After that, you can feel free to go out and explore the city. You can find all sorts of ways to entertain yourself in there, you can be sure of that~"
Almost as an afterthought she would add "Just be sure to make it to the Industrial Sector in the north by the 17th. This conversation never happened, capiche? Bye~"
The papers themselves were relatively simple, if somewhat concerning for their implications. Simply fill out a few blanks and be on your way.
