The Yuki weather had warmed considerably since the cold depths of winter, but even with the added sun it was still pretty cold. Snow littered the landscape in patches, and small areas of green grass were beginning to peek through. Kira and I walked silently down a dirt path in the woods, taking care to tread carefully. The warm weather made being outside in Yuki bearable, but it also meant a lot of the larger, more dangerous animals were also highly active and hungry to boot.
Following Kira's lead, we were currently engaged in a hunt for a thief who had a robbing vaults overnight. It might seem weird that we were looking for him during the day, but if we were going to stay one step ahead of the thief, we would have to be active when the thief was not. There was a chance it would be easy money for us to make, which would be very helpful, however catching the thief could be a dangerous endeavor. A certainty began gaining ground in my heart that we would find out very soon.
"Are you gonna be mad at me forever?" Kira asked of me, breaking the silence of our boots crunching through the patchy snow.
"Is it possible for us to not talk right now?" I asked of him, keeping my voice and face as emotionless as possible.
"Absolutely not." Kira responded. "We need to finally talk about this, so we can move on and work together to get past it."
"We're already working on getting past it." I said, refusing to look his way.
Kira let out an audible sigh. "I'm sorry Umi." Obviously he was trying to sweeten me up by using a nickname I hadn't allowed him to speak in such a long time.
"Sorry?" I asked, the pent up emotions finally getting loose. "You're sorry." I turned to him, not realizing my fists were clenched and trembling. "Do you realize what you have done? We are indebted to a psycho and for what? Training? A nice house to live in? Food? Warmth? You made a decision for the both of us and we're still trying to unfuck ourselves because of it."
An awkward silence set in for a brief moment. It felt really good getting all of the emotion off of my chest, but I knew I couldn't leave him buried in my anger or it would distract him for the rest of the mission. I turned and looked at him.
"I forgive you Kira." His features brightened up.
"Really Umi?"
"Yes really, but you better fix all of this or I'll unforgive you. Got it?" He looked at me with a cheerful smile.
"Hell yeah!"
Kira's head snapped forward and the smile drained from his face, destroying our moment in the process. Looking at him for a brief moment I could tell something was amiss. He gestured for me to be quiet with one hand and pointed to the bend in the path ahead of us. It was then that I heard the quick and almost silent movements taking place out sight in the treeline. I realized almost a split second too late that Kira and I were solely focused on this distraction before us, when we should have been observant of our surroundings. I heard two boots crunch into the patchy snow directly behind me before I fell forward to the ground as darkness overwhelmed my senses.
