Mission Description-
Tech Training:
Having received approval for his two training missions, Arkai dipped into the learning center to check out a couple of scrolls his father recommended before heading over to his sister’s favorite training ground. He hummed the well-known jingle as he walked. Becoming kage isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card. Although he expected he was about to get his ass kicked, he did his best to keep his spirits high. After all, being assigned his first missions was a small accomplishment, and his dad would approve of Arkai not lazing about inside all day.
The hike out to his sister’s forest copse took about twenty minutes, but thankfully it didn’t look as though it would storm. Arkai crossed the shallow river which separated the area from a hiking path and prepared himself. By now Uni had almost certainly caught sight of him. He knelt down behind a fallen tree and scanned the thicket. Great green pines cast shadows through the whole of the forest, but fifty meters ahead lay a small lake which was the source of the river Arkai had just crossed. To a casual passerby it was another patch of forest, but to Arkai it was the place where his sister routinely proved her superiority at taijutsu. He hadn’t warned her he was coming ahead of time either, which meant he was in for a beating.
Sure enough, the log in front of him shattered under the pressure of a drop kick. Arkai barely had time to jump backwards before finding himself grabbed by the collar and thrust against a tree, knife at his throat. “What are you doing in my forest interloper?” demanded a short, muscle-bound kunoichi. Arkai glared at his middle sibling. “Uni, this is a public park. You can’t just assault everyone who walks by.” She snorted. “Not everyone, just you.” She released his collar and let him fall to earth. “So what’s up? I thought you’d be in the hospital with Mom about now.”
Arkai picked himself up, dusting off dirty pants. “I’ll be going there tomorrow. But I need your help with my missions.” At the mention of missions Uni’s smile widened. “Missions? Finally done wasting time in the learning center?” She pulled a scroll from out of her backpack. “As it happens, I’m about to go on my first B rank tomorrow. I’ll be so busy prepping I doubt I’ll have time to help you chase dogs or whatever.”
He gave an exaggerated groan. “It’s just the new tech training. C’mon, you’ll have fun. You like target practice don’t you?” He unrolled the first scroll from the library and scanned it briefly. “Basic genjutsu. I’m going to try to scare you. If it doesn’t work, you can wail on me to your heart’s content.” He met her gaze. “Sound good?” Uni had already begun gathering stones and tree branches to throw. “Obviously I’m down to whoop you. You’ve got 30 seconds, then I’m coming.” Arkai knew better than to waste time. He jammed the scroll in his pouch and lept away, not stopping until he was perched in a tree some 50 meters away. He’d made sure to leave a few broken branches in his wake, the jutsu only had a range of 13 meters, so he primarily needed to draw her within range.
He made several handsigns to focus his chakra. It had been a while since he’d worked on his phantasms, and he forgot how different genjutsu techniques were when compared to medical skills. Instead of causing chakra to flow into another object or body, he instead tried to circulate it throughout his prefrontal cortex. The first part was to imagine what sort of fear his target might experience. He conceptualized a pail of water being sloshed around, comparing it to the chakra circulating in the brain. Start the motion, then balance. He tried to evenly distribute energy, but he spent too much time focusing on the emotional aspect of the jutsu. Arkai felt a creeping sensation travel up his spine; he’d accidentally reversed the flow of chakra into his own body. A fist-sized stone smashed into his abdomen, and Arkai fell out of the tree. He managed to activate the tree-climbing technique before he hit the ground, fixing his sandals the trunk. Another rock struck him in the thigh and he beat a hasty retreat.
Okay, let’s try that again. Arkai already heard his sister’s footsteps trailing him in the distance. He cut an “X” into a nearby tree, then dove into some bushes about 10 meters opposite and started to build chakra again. He willed energy into his brain, this time envisioning a cinderblock cutting off chakra flow to his spine in an attempt to keep it from reversing on him. He pictured a child with cupped hands, swirling water without letting too much drip out of its grasp. This time he felt more confident in his chakra control. Uni had sprinted to the tree with an “X” carved in the bark, dragging a sizeable chunk of wood behind her. Arkai tried to picture what that tree would look like in a nightmare. Blurred edges, jagged shadows, general black and white imagery. He concentrated on that tingling feeling of fear, then extended his chakra directly at his sister. She froze, and for an instant he thought he’d got her. A cry of “Not good enough!” followed by a hail of branches proved him wrong. Arkai fled once more, wincing as he jogged in the direction of the lake.
A straight line of chakra probably wasn’t the best method. Maybe waves would have a better chance at hitting her? Arkai formed another string of seals as he stumbled onto the lake shore. Another surge of energy flowed through his brain, and he willed the chakra to disperse in small circles around him. He closed his eyes, trying to feel a mental connection between himself and living creatures around him. He sensed a point of living energy and sharpened his intensity. Run. He imagined a racing heart, creeping dread, hoping to pinpoint an animal’s need to take flight. The tactic worked reasonably well on the squirrel Arkai had erroneously targeted, who suddenly experienced an urgent need to LEAVE. Arkai opened his eyes. Nothing again. The wind picked up, blowing small ripples across the lake. Uni was nowhere in sight. He had to keep trying before she got bored of scavenging new projectiles.
He stepped on the surface of the lake, projecting a steady flow of chakra to stabilize his footsteps. If he got to the center of the water, he’d at least be able to see his sister before she struck. Arkai exhaled. He pictured a blank chalkboard, then imagined himself as a single dot in its center. In his mind’s eye, he traced a spiral out from that center point, moving slowly, steadily. He pushed his chakra out in a similar pattern, until it spread ten meters in every direction. He felt the fish swimming beneath him, their darting movements resonating inside his zone of control. I think I’m in, at least a little. The serenity of the moment broke when a new, much larger living creature entered the sphere of his chakra.
Oh boy. Arkai formed the seals once more. He could definitely feel his sister within his sphere of influence, he just had to act. Upon completion of his last seal, he used his previously extended chakra tendrils to access Uni’s brain. Though the target was moving, the ubiquity of his chakra’s circumference let him feel his way up past her spinal column and into the brainstem. What’s Uni afraid of? Spiders. Their nervous systems now connected, Arkai thought as hard as he could think. He tried to think of what his sister was seeing. A small, brown ninja holding a handsign. Aaaaand enhance. He imagined jagged black legs jutting out from his sides, lifting him up into the air above her, then leaning his face into her own to stare at her two eyes with eight of his own.
A short shriek broke his concentration. He realized his sibling came much closer to striking him than he would have preferred. Her arms clutched a thick branch above her head, but failed to bring it down on his skull. Uni’s hands shivered, and she dropped the branch into the water. “You turd. You know I don’t like bugs, cheater!” Arkai grinned. “Hey, ninjas must do whatever it takes to win.” They walked to the shore together, trading insults all the while.

Glimpse of Fear
Rank: "D"
Skill: GenJutsu
Effect: User plunges the subject directly into a waking nightmare, immersing it in a world of fear for a brief instant.
Special: "Handseals"
Drawback: ---
Description: A Fear, Mind-Affecting Technique. Affects 1 creature. The user is able to perform this technique at a distance of 6 meters plus 7 meters per class level. The duration of this technique lasts for 5 rounds per class level. This technique may be negated. User plunges the subject directly into a waking nightmare, immersing it in a world of fear for a brief instant. The change happens so fast that many creatures do not consciously sense it all, but a failed save means the sudden shift in perception registers long enough to leave the subject shaken for 5 round per Class Level. Sightless creatures and creatures immune to fear effects are not affected by this Jutsu. In addition, a target that fails the save to resist this Jutsu also takes a -4 penalty on all saves made to resist Jutsus with the fear descriptor for the duration of this Jutsu.
Limit: Must know the Phantasm Perception.
